What dates are all of you guys interviewing? I'm going to be in NYC the first week of September and am contemplating sending an "in-the-area" email.

Guy leading the 15th tour here!😛

I highly doubt you'll be able to get an interview the first week of Sept, since they are already sending end on the month invites. You can send the email if you like, but I wouldn't expect much. Best of luck though!:luck:

Thanks for the feedback, I decided to hold off on sending the email.... it definitely seems a little premature.

Just signed on for the tour on Sept. 22nd...anyone gonna be there?😀

If we have been complete for 6 weeks are chances not looking too hot? I love everything about this school and ESPECIALLY location. I wrote about being from LA, california which is a huge city with diversity and going to NYC would be a totally different yet similar experience (if that makes sense).

🙄

Basic Q: If we dont have strong ties to NY, do we have a chance in hell?

I'm interviewing here (again) on September 14th I can't wait! 🙂

Wow!! That was fast. Complete 8/16 interview for 10/7. I'm instate and my stats are average.

Plenty of OOS got interviews, including my self. Don't know what are actual chances of being accepted after that are though. Also, I really have no ties to NY.

I had friends that had to wait for several weeks/months and got in, so that shouldn't be a source of concern. I think the perspective from your essay is quite good. I haven't been to LA, but a lot of big cities are similar to NYC so I think that makes sense. When you apply to the OOS state schools, and you are not nearby and have no connection to the state the process can seem very random.

Does anybody think it'll hurt my chances if I don't answer the third optional question?

So the big rule about applying:

If you are complete early, you're not allowed to start thinking you've blown it at any one school til January.

I know it's tempting to think after a few weeks of silence that it's automatically a no, but don't do that. Interviews are gonna come out all year and it's not over til its over.

These questions can be used to your advantage, but leaving them blank won't cast a negative light on you.

Hey guys,

I just checked my app status this morning to find that they want me to provide detail about my community service and/or extracurricular activities and that they will mail me instructions. do the instructions come via email or snail mail?

How did you check the app status? I sent the secondary offline via mail - I didn't know there was an online place to check this stuff?

Hey guys!

Quick question on the secondary.
When they say 'from the area', does that mean applying from the area or have EVER lived in the area?

For the question: If you are not from the New York City metropolitan area (Five Boroughs), describe what personal experiences
prepare you to live and study in New York City, and what will be your personal support system

I grew up in Queens for 10 years before moving to Long Island, so should I still answer the question?

To me, it sounds like you're from the NYC area..haha.

Well I grew up in the Bronx and still live less than 25 minutes away from Brooklyn and I still explained what prepared me for life there and my support system anyway. You should just go ahead and say that you used to live there, etc. 😀

I'm feeling a bit discouraged, all these oos peeps are getting interviews practically overnight...I'm instate, and would do anything to go here...Still no word, BUT I do have interviews with Ohio State and Wake Forest...come on SUNY DOWNSTATE ACCEPT ME PLLLLLLLLLLLEASE

Hmm, the site does not work for me. Do you have to be sent an email notifying you of your application from downstate? I also sent in my secondary via mail.
I received a (snail mail) letter informing me that my application was complete. But you should also be able to log in at this site.

Make sure and select 2011 it us defaulted for 2010

Hey fellow premeds, medical students and advisors,

Quick question for you: Do you think it would to my advantage to begin volunteering at The Brooklyn Teaching Hospital of SUNY Downstate or Kings County Hospital? A couple people suggested that would be a good idea to show my sincere interest in their program. Honestly it would be very tough to work into my schedule as I'm a full time research assistant at Columbia Medical but if it would help me get into this program, I'd totally make the sacrifice.

Any experience with this kind of suggestion, or factual data on whether the Admissions Committee will look favoralby on it or not would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't think volunteering at either hospital would make a difference. Volunteering in general is a good thing as long as you get good experience and you like it. It would make you more familiar with the culture of the school and physicians there, and if you happen to meet one on the adcom - then it might help.

Know someone who did research here and didn't get in. Ultimately, it will be the quality of your app and interview which determine your disposition. Not where you did your research/volunteering.

Why would they look UNfavorably on that?

Yes, they will love it if you volunteer at their hospital. If your application is solid, you will have a much better chance than someone who applies and doesn't do this. You should also make sure to get a letter of recommendation from the person in charge of volunteers there (so keep a good relationship with them).

Also, does anyone know the correlation between being offered an interview (as in if you get an invite for Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb or March) and then being accepted? I think it seems the earlier in the cycle, the better off you do...but how significant and true is that? Anyone know?

oops this was supposed to go into Stony Brook thread sooorrrryyy early morning...

ONLY 2? Keep in mind that there are tons of people who would kill for 1 interview this whole year 😛

You're doing fine and it's early, hang in there.

Thanks - its so good to have encouragement...it feels like its just me at this point so I have no one around me with any input on the process...

Varies from school to school. Certain schools are known to accept fewer ppl as the interview season progresses.

How long does it take AMCAS to send downstate this paper application of theirs? That's the only thing missing from my application now.

Hey guys, quick question...

Would it be a bad thing to say that I applied to the Brooklyn BA/MD program out of high school (in conjunction with SUNY Downstate), but was waitlisted?

Is it a good thing if they see you were serious about attending Downstate, even out of high school?
Or is it bad considering I did not get accepted?

I'm not really sure how it's relevant. Leave it out.

complete 8/12 and no interview yet. instate and fairly good stats. but i guess they dont do it in order so its okay. does anyone know if they send out acceptances in batches? or is it all at the same time?

First batch generally goes out ~Oct 15. After that, it varies.

What's going on at this school? I was complete 7/22. Am I to assume that I've been passed over 🙁

Doesn't seem to be a lot happening on this thread...

Downstate says in their application handbook that they do NOT review applications in any particular order, or by order of completion..so don't fret if you've been "passed over" for now.

My tour is in 2 days! Are you 9/15 people excited?!?!😀

So I just looked at my check list and the only thing still missing is the AMCAS paper application. I paid online 9/2 and my secondary has also been received by Downstate via snail mail since then. Do you guys know how long it took for your AMCAS paper app to show as received from the time you initiate the secondary process? It's really frustrating that I got my **** turned around quickly only to be held up by AAMC.

2-3 weeks after my application was verified. Good Luck
