am I the only one on the HPA list? I hope that's not a bad sign for me:scared:
I think that's probably a good thing. SUNY Upstate is one of the few schools in this state that rejects a significant portion of interviewees, rather than giving so many applicants false hope and putting them on an unranked waitlist. If they put you on the HPA your odds are probably pretty good.

that's true, but I still can't shake this negative feeling! keeping my fingers crossed here...

this might be a stupid question, but... if you get accepted and then you say you'll come, do you have to go? or are you just holding your spot in the class? upstate was my first acceptance but I'm still waiting on a lot of schools so I don't want to say I'll go here without considering all the (potential) options. that's a super obvious question but I don't know the answer. help!

just got the ii this morning!!!🙂
although it is a pretty late interview? Does anyone know if it is worth it and if there are any spots left? I know some schools almost interview for a waitlist position. 😛

Got an invite today after being placed on hold. So whoever said being placed on hold is basically a rejection is wrong.

At least a few people got invites recently after being on pre-interview hold.

I guess it's not so impossible then.🙂

I believe that the main purpose of the essays (and especially the major interests essay) is for the interviewers to get to know you a little, since it's a closed file interview. If you write too much, they are more likely to not read them. So I'd day anything over a page and a half is too long, and around a page is ideal.

The interviews are not closed file (at least not most of them).

They are supposed to be closed-file. Its still possible that the interviewer will look up your file if he or she is on the adcom, but most interviewers do not have the applicants' information other than the two essays. Unless they suddenly changed their policy midseason, which I highly doubt.

Maybe I'm wrong, though their site says:

The interview provides an opportunity for discussion and clarification of information submitted on the application form regarding your academic record, extracurricular interests, clinical experiences and more.

This was my first interview, so I could be mixing it up, but I could have sworn my interviewer knew more than what was just in my essays.

They are, indeed, closed file. This makes it especially important to write a good interview essay. It's all the information the interviewers will have on you so sell yourself well. Perhaps it's different if your interviewer is on the adcom since they will see your whole file eventually anyways. The way they explained it, the interviewer writes an evaluation of you and it's simply added to the rest of the info in your file (grades, MCAT, LORS, PS, etc.)
I interviewed there recently and really liked the school. I'm crossing my fingers for an acceptance.

Hi! Congrats to everyone who has been accepted! I am a sophomore in college and very interested in Upstate and I am hoping to apply Early Assurance. Has the Early Assurance program changed in any way? Since I have a break now I want to get started on my application and was wondering if there is an essay required in addition to the personal statement. Also, is there anything I can do now in connection with my application since once I return to school I won't have this kind of free time. Thank you 🙂

Yes. I remember writing more than one essay. Perhaps this is a good time to do a lot of volunteer work. Also, shadowing experience is very important. Good luck.

This is a bit late, but yeah, interviews are definitely closed file. Your essays are obviously important but I think in a closed file interview what's more important is how you steer the conversation. If you have things in your file that make you stand out (for better or for worse), no one is going to prompt you to talk about them like at open file interviews. So if there are things you want to discuss or expand upon, self-aggrandizing in which you'd like to partake, some false modesty you want to engage in, or whatever, you need to bring that up yourself.

I spent the last four minutes of one of my interviews talking about my essay, which was hastily written. Obviously, YMMV.

So, I interviewed on Jan. 12th and it seemed to go well. I've been checking my status page furiously ever since. It just got updated to "Status Made" today.:scared: Is there a consensus on what this means (Acceptance? Waitlist? Rejection?). I really don't think I can tolerate two weeks of waiting.

That doesn't give you any information one way or another. Many people who received that were accepted (like me), but others were waitlisted with that message and I believe a few people got rejected with that status. So keep up the faith, a decision email should come soon.

As to the people discussing whether it was closed vs open file. Its definitely SUPPOSED to be closed file. That's what they explained on interview day. However my interviewers knew things about me that they could only know if they read my application, so its clear they somehow have access to the applications.

Found out today... waitlisted. Interview was terrible, so no surprise here

the interviews are supposed to be closed file however each person gets interviewed by one committee member and one non-committee member. The committee members have access to everyone's files through the online system and so its possible that they look up data prior to the interview.

After I interviewed at Upstate six weeks ago (December 13, 2010), today I got an e-mail from admissions telling me information about the summer gross anatomy program. It has all this language implying that this will be a head start to medical school and what not. However, I have not received any e-mails about getting accepted, waitlisted, or rejected yet. I thought it was particularly strange.

I really don't know how to take this, but I'm under the assumption right now that this doesn't mean anything and is an offer they make to all students currently waiting on interviews. Is this a particular e-mail that everyone gets? I just don't want to get my hopes up just in case it's generic.

I interviewed on Jan. 12th and received the same thing without any notice of what their decision is. I replied to the email to inquire but have no response yet.

Well, I called admissions today and that e-mail goes out to people who have been accepted. I got the official e-mail a little earlier.

So TheRach1025, congrats!

You're right. I got the acceptance e-mail today. Thanks and congrats to you too.

This is my first acceptance and I'm too stunned to be elated. 😱

rejected off of pre-interview hold this afternoon

Was on Pre-interview hold since novenber 16. Oh well let's see if the other schools i applied to will come through.:xf:

Did anyone who interviewed at Upstate stay with a student host? How did you guys go about looking for one? The link on the interview page that is supposed to direct you to the instructions of finding a student host takes me to another link.

Just got an interview invite after being placed on Hold in september! Thought I was done with invites for the cycle, so a very pleasant surprise. I didn't realize I would have to submit the essays one week before and scheduled my interview for just over a week from today. Anyone else have this and talk to the admissions office about getting an extra couple days?

Just got accepted today after being placed on the hold list and then invited for an interview 2 weeks ago!

I'm so excited.

Secondary Submitted: 9/7/10
Secondary Complete: 9/15/10
Placed on Hold: 9/28/10
Interview Invite: 1/10/11
Interview: 1/19/11
Accepted: 2/01/11

I thought they rejected me for sure, but interview after like 6 months of pre-interview hold!!! (OOS, Canadian btw!)

I know SUNY is rolling but will it make a difference whether I interview the first or the third week of February? Will I be just interviewing for the WL spot either way? Because it seems pretty late... 🙁

Also, what time does the interview day end?

+1 - would like to know this also!

"Smith says the three SUNY teaching hospitals – in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse – would lose their $154 million dollar state subsidy, as well as reductions in Medicaid spending the governor is calling for." -Andrew Cuomo's new budget plan.

I don't know what this will mean for us and our tuition, but I don't think it can be good... 🙁

That's interesting. SUNY Buffalo, where I hope to attend, doesn't have a SUNY teaching hospital (still plenty of clinical options).😀 Hopefully the tuition there stays the same.

I don't see a status anywhere. And the site is still letting me sign up for interviews???

rejected pre-interview today. another one bites the dust.

I got the pre-interview rejection email today too. I like Upstate, but it wasn't meant to be. Except for Buffalo, I'm not getting much love from the SUNYs. Buffalo is my favorite, so that's fine, I guess.🙂

Dude I hope you get into buffalo or nymc. I only have not unsubscribed from the buffalo thread cuz I'm watching it waiting to hear you got accepted there and only following the upstate thread to see if prateek gets good news from there cuz I was shocked by his being put on hold. lol.

Thanks, guju. I found out my waitlist third for UB, and things are looking really promising there.

Any acceptances yet for you? It looks like you just had a really good interview at UCF.🙂

Still clinging on it seems 😛 Thanks for the support <3

I've emailed some people on the student hosting list but no reply.. Do the hotels in the area give discounts for med students interviewing? Which ones did you guys stay at??

I stayed at the Maplewood Inn. Nice and pretty cheap. IIRC they had the best continental breakfast. Free shuttle to the school/airport as well.

I stayed at the Genesee Grande which is a few blocks from Weiskotten Hall where the interviews are held. They have an interviewee discount which brings the price to around $100 (before taxes/fees). Buy food elsewhere, though. Theirs is expensive. They have a shuttle that will take you to the interview in the morning but it's really a short walk so that's what I ended up doing. It'll also let you get a chance to look around a little bit.

Best of luck!!!

Oh the plethora of self denigrating things I would do to get off the waitlist here 🙂

I seem to have forgotten what questions were asked on the SUNY Upstate supplemental, can someone please remind me?
