To repeat: Last year (and every year Dr. Severin has been dean of admissions) there were several people who were complete in August and didn't get interviewed until April and got in and then compare to me last year, I was complete November 28th, interviewed March 3rd. Either way though, UB does not fill all of their seats until the day after the last day of interviews. They have no quota or ANY policy regarding OOS vs IS applicants. They take who they think is best for the school regardless of gender, age, residency, whatever. So, residency isn't a factor. Especially since tuition for ALL 2,3, & 4 year students is the same, no matter where you came from before 1st year. Obviously though, the first people who were complete in early July were/will be the first to be interviewed because their applications were the only ones to review when they started.

Good Luck all.

From the UB website FAQ:

Do you give preference to New York State residents?
Some preference is given to qualified residents of NYS. Competitive out of state applicants are encouraged to apply.

The latest stats that I could find (Fall 2008) bear this out:

In-state admissions data 1754 applied, 423 interviewed, 235 were accepted, 103 enrolled
Out-of-state admissions data 2085 applied, 219 interviewed, 88 were accepted, 32 enrolled

I met with Mr. Rosso in August and he went over the 2010 entering class data with me and it was closer to 90/45 and it was almost equal for the applicants. And the only way they consider Western NY applicants differently is the hope that they will stay in the Buffalo area and UB med community. But they are not given extra points or anything specific. And there is no quota or anything like that for those accepted from OOS vs IS.

they are not given extra points or anything specific. And there is no quota or anything like that for those accepted from OOS vs IS.

I’m not doubting what you’re saying, it’s just that the stats seem to indicate a definite IS bias.
Here are some stats from Fall 2007:
In-state admissions data 1757 applied, 404 interviewed, 245 were accepted, 112 enrolled Out-state admissions data 2069 applied, 225 interviewed, 77 were accepted, 23 enrolled

Both 2007 and 2008 stats show that ~24% of IS candidates were interviewed and only ~11% of OOS candidates were interviewed.

Here are my assumptions:
1) The adcom evaluates each applicant and assigns a score to each complete portfolio
2) The population of applicants is large enough to assume that the scores fall into a normal distribution
3) The mean score of the IS population compared to the OOS population should be about the same

Therefore, if there is no IS preference then one could reasonably assume that the percentage of OOS interviews should be about the same as the percentage of IS interviews and they obviously are not even close.

So the 2007 and 2008 data seems to imply an IS bias in that 1 in 4 IS candidates were interviewed as compared to 1 in 10 OOS candidates.

Possible explanations of this discrepancy:
1) In the 2007 and 2008 cycles, UB did exhibit an IS bias, as stated on their website, but now they have changed their policy and haven’t updated their website.
2) In 2007 / 2008 UB did offer the same percentage of interviews, but a larger percentage of OOS candidates turned down the invite, so the ‘number interviewed’ stat only reflects actual interviews that took place, but not the number of interviews offered.
3) ???

Sorry to go all analytical on you, but I’m an engineer and that’s the way my brain works. I’m just trying to understand it. 🙂

In continuing with this discussion, according to MSAR last year's applicants and class were:

In-state: applicants- 1760, interviewed-354, matriculated- 102
OOS: applicants- 1996, interviewed- 235, matriculated- 42

71% of the class is comprised of NYS residents. That would indicate an in-state preference, as stated on their own website. The accepted applicants must obviously be greater than the matriculated numbers. And as quoted from MSAR under selection factors: "preference is given to qualified residents of New York State."

Okay guys, I think you're missing what my point was, or maybe I didn't focus on it enough. All I meant was that the focus is on your life plans or what they perceive to be your plan. If you make it obvious that you hate Buffalo and don't plan to stay here much after your done with school but are from the area, they don't like that as much as someone who plans to stay in Buffalo for a long time, even if you're from California or whatever. The thing that those numbers do not tell you is that of the 174 (I think this was the number Mr. Rosso gave me, but if not it was very close) applicants from Western New York (the 9 counties all the way to the west side of NY), 104 were interviewed and 78 matriculated. So, the NY resident thing isn't just b/c your a NY resident. Basically the same number of non-WNY NY'ers and Out of Stater's were matriculated. So, all I meant was that the advantage is in your plan for the future, not where you're from and UB doesn't have quotas AT ALL. All I mean by that is that there is no set numbers they are shooting for for in or out of staters or WNYer's.

So combining your numbers with those posted by Longshanks would mean that 250 NYSers from central/upstate and downstate NY were interviewed and only 24 matriculated. This ratio of IS matriculants to interviewees seems too low especially considering the IS tuition.

Correct. That's why I was trying to point out that WNY and Buffalo ties are what they are looking for. I don't think the tuition is a major factor for IS people compared to OOS Because UB only charges OOS tuition to OOS'res for the first year anyways. After that, you are considered IS and only pay IS tuition.

I interviewed at UB NO ACTION will not change until a decision is made. I still have NO ACTION. I think we could hear as early as tomorrow for those interviewed in Sept.

I just checked my status a minute ago (5:05 PM Eastern). Got waitlisted (very common at this school and they have tons of movement for upper two thirds).

An improvement over last year where I didn't even get a single post-interview waitlist.

Just checked the status page and got waitlisted.
When did they say we could call to check where we are on the waitlist?

I got accepted!!!! OMG I'm going to be a doctor!!!!!!!!!

Waitlisted, 34S 4.0

should I be worried?

Congrats everyone!

Interview invite today! I was complete on 9/20.

The email listed 11/17, which I'm going to say is the earliest day offered now...? When I called about re-scheduling, Dr. Rosso gave the option of any Weds through January, except for 11/24, which Buffalo wants to reserve for local people coming back for Thanksgiving Break. Hope that's helpful!

Also, quick question on when the interview day ended... does 4:30pm give a lot of room or is it about when things will end? Thanks!

I was also complete on 9/20 ...how do they go about picking people for interviews..does anyone understand their random process??

In regards to when days end, most interviewees seem to be out of here around 3:30 latest, saw one guy there til 4 once. Some are significantly earlier. I was done around 3 last year when I interviewed if I remember. Hope that helps!

All the random process means is that once you are complete you are added to the "pile" of applications and are available to be reviewed any time between the day you are considered complete and March 31, 2011. Last year I was complete November 28th and got my interview invite February 22nd for March 10th interview. Some people who received interview invites in March were complete since July. But, just keep in mind that it doesn't matter when you're interviewed because they keep spots open until the last interview day-scheduled for April 27th, 2011.

No, waitlist early is usually a good sign. They accept off the waitlist starting the week after you're waitlisted, so don't worry about it.

Many many many people get accepted off the waitlist. Some earlier, but many right around april and may.

I have not heard anything from this UB and I have been complete since about early August... silent hold?

Its random review. Essentially, it doesn't matter when you are complete. They will not fill their class until April. Until then your file may be reviewed at any time and a decision made.

Initially we were told they were moving away from this system, but recent e-mails and information posted in this thread show that UB decided to continue with this policy.

So, don't take it to heart. I'm in the same situation as you.

Congrats everyone!

No you shouldn't. The wait list moves probably 3-4 times as quick as in other schools. Miraculously accepted with a 31P 3.1

Congrats to all those accepted/wait-listed. Unlike other schools wailisting at UB is quite the accomplishment.

Withdrew my application today. I hope one of you guys gets my interview spot! GL!

I have an interview at UB on 11/17. This is my first med school interview, and I'm very nervous/excited. Complete 10/12, invite 10/19, so an unbelievably fast turnaround. I'm shocked, as I was hoping to hear back by March, if at all.

I live 5 minutes away from the South/Main St. campus, so no traveling necessary.

I'm a native Buffalonian, and I went to UB for undergrad, where I graduated this May. UB Medical School is a great school, and it's my top choice.

My stats are 3.66 / 33R. Hopefully I stand a chance here, as the competition gets steeper every year.

Good luck to everyone!

Wow! There are some super fast turn arounds for a "random" review process. I hope they get to me soon! (like before the snow really hits, driving through northern Ohio and PA when the snow machine is on isn't very appealing - or safe haha)

Good luck to everyone interviewing and those waiting to hear back!:luck:

for those who have been accepted, have you received your acceptance packet in the mail? if so, does it say how long you have to respond and how to pay the deposit? thanks!

You get a week from receipt of the letter to return a form and they also tell you to call the admissions office. You can pay by check or on-line, though I had trouble with the online system. Congrats! 🙂

Thanks a lot! And congratulations to you, too! Perhaps we'll be working together next year 🙂

lucky you!!!!!! i've been complete since the first week of september and havent heard anything 🙁

good luck at your interview!!

You receive an acceptance letter a few days after your status online gets changed to "accepted". My guess is they send it out the same day your status changes. I too had trouble with their online payment system. I just sent a check instead. Good luck to the rest of you!

thanks! and congratulations! yea, their online system doesn't seem to work too well. looks like a check is the way to go. thanks again and best of luck to all!

If its the same online pay system as the rest of UB, then yes, their online pay system can be odd at times. Check is probably a good way to go if that's an option. Paper trail is always nice to have in case of any complications.

Anyone else interviewing tomorrow, 11/17? I'm really looking forward to it. Maybe I'll meet some fellow SDN members.

Apparently, UB updates the status to accepted/waitlisted/rejected within 48 hours of the interview.

The majority of matriculants at UB are accepted off the waitlist, so being waitlisted here is really not so bad.

I have been waitlisted. 3.66 / 33R

Judging by the number of acceptances in last year's waitlist thread, this is promising news. 🙂

Same. Interviewed 11-17...Waitlisted. I know it's probably good news but I've been down about it all day for sum reason... I guess it's just the word "waitlist" 🙁

Katekat, I'm sure we met yesterday, and I know exactly how you feel.

Just remember that UB is one of the very few schools where being waitlisted is truly good, and almost nobody is accepted outright. Out of the 20 or so interviewees yesterday, I'm willing to bet that only one or two were accepted today. The rest were either waitlisted or rejected (maybe 50/50), and I'm honestly just happy that I wasn't rejected.

Check out the 2009-2010 waitlist thread for UB and you will see that nearly all of the top-tier and middle-tier waitlisted applicants were ultimately accepted, although in many cases, it took until May or June. "Waitlist" is not a nice sounding word, but try to stay optimistic.

Thank you so much Maxwell, that was very encouraging and I hope we both end up getting in!

Also at Buffalo the waitlist moves very quickly because they give you literally 24 hours to decide if you want to accept and you don't get the 1-2 weeks like at other schools to decide. This is how it was when the M2 at GWU that i know was accepted to Buffalo 2 years ago.

This is not a problem for me. If I'm accepted off the waitlist, I'm literally going to drop everything I'm doing that instant, run to the admissions office and hand them a check. I live and work very close to where the med school is located. I will make sure to check my status multiple times daily, so I don't miss my chance.😀

To those of you waiting on an acceptance or holding on to one:

Please make sure if you are accepted to Buffalo that you REALLY want to go there. I was enrolled in the post-bacc program through UB School of Medicine last year. Coming from Texas it was a HUGE change and I thought I didn't care about location, just that I would be one step closer to being a doctor. I never realized how much location impacted my experience and ultimately affected my happiness and ability to study and focus on achieving my goals. Long story short I was MISERABLE at UB.

Also keep in mind that UB has very limited study space for the medical students in the Health Sciences library with all of the Nursing, Dental, PT and OT students around its hard to find a spot. And if you're not used to blizzards or snow (I actually never saw snow until last year) then you may really want to re-consider.

I don't want to speak negative on the school bc I'm sure its an amazing program, Just want to give some insight and hopefully help someone make the right choice. I wish someone told me some of these things before I went to UB. If you want more specifics just PM me 🙂

I absolutely want to go to UB, because I've never lived anywhere but Buffalo, and I'm not miserable. I also went to UB for undergrad, and am very familiar and comfortable with all facilities. I've had classes in the same buildings as the med students, and have even had professors that also teach in the med school.

Yes, study space in the Health Sciences Library is limited, and there is no dedicated medical library. UB is still a great school, and I would most certainly be happy there. I could also continue to live at home for free, and my parents are extremely easy going.

Also, there is no way I could afford OOS/Private tuition, as I'll be going into enough debt as it is. I'm currently struggling to pay off my undergrad loans and application debt by working multiple minimum wage jobs.

There are obviously many people out there that wouldn't be happy in Buffalo, but I'm definitely not one of them. My frame of reference is narrow, I know, but I'm OK with that for now.
