I went to grad school at UB. Study space is fine. Most med schools I've seen on tours are just as limited in library space. Maybe its a northeast thing since the facilities are typically older and there's less real estate available. Either way, you can find ways to study on South Campus in the library. I've never had to worry about finding a spot except during finals week. There are always the libraries on North Campus if necessary, which are much bigger. I usually studied in my apartment or in hospital libraries to be honest.

Of course there's North campus to study but Capen is FULL of loud & rowdy undergrads, hence the name " Club Capen" and at Lockwood you will always have to wait in line for a computer. I just needed a quiet place to study and North Campus didn't have that for me. It's great if y'all love UB and their facilities, Im just sharing my experiences. Now that I'm interviewing for med school I see a lot of things that other schools offer that UB doesn't.

Best of luck to those attending UB

So looks like I got the rejection letter today. Kinda was expecting it when I heard a classmate with similar stats got one just 2 days earlier.

Oh well. Good luck to the remaining candidates

Sorry to hear that, but I'm sure you will get in somewhere. From your previous posts, it looks like you applied early in the season to 30+ schools, so something good is bound to happen.

I applied to 15 schools, and received only one interview invite so far, UB. It's a tough process for everybody.

To those of you waiting on an acceptance or holding on to one:

Please make sure if you are accepted to Buffalo that you REALLY want to go there. I was enrolled in the post-bacc program through UB School of Medicine last year. Coming from Texas it was a HUGE change and I thought I didn't care about location, just that I would be one step closer to being a doctor. I never realized how much location impacted my experience and ultimately affected my happiness and ability to study and focus on achieving my goals. Long story short I was MISERABLE at UB.

Also keep in mind that UB has very limited study space for the medical students in the Health Sciences library with all of the Nursing, Dental, PT and OT students around its hard to find a spot. And if you're not used to blizzards or snow (I actually never saw snow until last year) then you may really want to re-consider.

I don't want to speak negative on the school bc I'm sure its an amazing program, Just want to give some insight and hopefully help someone make the right choice. I wish someone told me some of these things before I went to UB. If you want more specifics just PM me 🙂

If you go to Buffalo not expecting snow...uhm how do I put this delicately, that's your own fault. It's upstate NY off the lake, expect snow, and large amounts. Keep shovel in trunk to dig your car out when you get buried back in by the snow plow. Doesn't matter where you are from: north = cold = snow. Plus, doesn't the panhandle of TX get snow too? hehe

It's a SUNY school, if you don't know the SUNY system then you'll be surprised by how things go.

With anything, you should research what you are getting into before you get into it. 🙂

For me, I have friends in Buffalo (and other parts of NY), and they have the courses I want. I also enjoyed my previous stint in upstate NY, so I think it wouldn't be hard to go back and be there for the next chunk of years.

First year here. In regards to study space, I haven't really heard a single complaint from anyone in my class about it. And second years say we are way more studios than them. The library may not have a ton of space, but there are empty conference rooms all over campus, an "annex" building with a library atmosphere, the student lounge (if you don't mind me playing pool), and coffee shops galore, among others. You won't see most of those on the tour, so I'm just tossing it out there.

Also...yay snow!

Spot Coffee is the best.

But for studying I prefer Cafe Aroma - a lot quieter there.

So anyone start filling out fafsa yet?? Also anyone hear from the background agency UB employs?? anyone looking for apartments yet?? am i planning ahead too early? Im so excited!!:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Well... you can't fill out FAFSA until after January 1st....

Dude(tte?)! If I end up here, I will hunt you down! I have no one to play pool with right now - my bf practically refuses to play because "he doesn't know how"

Knowing there is a pool table here...just made UB that much more attractive.👍

It's really nice in the student lounge, which was just remodeled last year. I was in there between my first and second interview. It can only be accessed by med students, the only exception being applicants on interview day for a short time.

No one has posted here in more than a few days, so I'll bring this thread back to the front page.

Anyone else read last year's waitlist thread for UB? It gives me a lot of hope. The top and middle thirds were accepted, and they even dipped into the bottom third for a few people.

Someone needs to make the waitlist thread for this cycle, although it might make more sense to do it in February when they announce top/middle/bottom position on the list. The format for last year's thread worked really well.

Pool request accepted. I dunno how much time I'll have as a second year, but a few first years (self included) put in some time at the table most days around lunch.

Let me know if/when you're going to interview, and I'll make sure to stop by the lounge so you have someone to play.

Sweet! Now let's hope that Mr. Russo & co invite me up!

I still have my parka from when I lived back in upstate! ... I wonder if I should have put that on my app...

Viagra is a medication used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Clinical studies shown that Viagra possesses a significant therapeutic effect in more than 88% of men with erectile dysfunction.

Viagra is a pill used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. It can help many men who have erectile dysfunction get and keep an erection when they become sexually excited (stimulated).

You will not get an erection just by taking this medicine. Viagra helps a man with erectile dysfunction get an erection only when he is sexually excited.

However, you should keep in mind that Viagra is not useful for everyone. Necessarily talk with your doctor if you are suffering from any cardiovascular diseases such as angina, hypotension, coronary heart disease, abnormal heart beat(arrhythmia). If you are taking Nitrate drugs during treatment you may experience a drop of blood pressure leading to life-threatening conditions.

Also let your health care provider know if you have liver disease, eye problems, anemia and leukemia, multiple myeloma and cavernosal fibrosis. You doctor should specify the right dosage for you relying on age, medical conditions and use of other medication. Usually the recommended dosage of Viagra is 50mg one hour prior to the sexual intercourse.

In people over 65 years of age the treatment with Viagra should be carried only under health care providers supervision. In elders the doctors prescribe the lowest dose of Viagra(25mg) to control erectile dysfunction. Monitoring of vital functions is required.

Viagra may cause a certain number of side effects. If you experience severe headache, urinary tract infections, vision problems, rash, stomach disorders, facial flushing seek medical attention immediately. Usually in appropriate use according the doctors instruction Viagra is well tolerated....

Anyone have their interview on 11/24 or today? How did it go?

Supposedly, Thanksgiving week was mostly for Western New Yorkers that would be home from their various undergraduate institutions.

At my 11/17 interview, there were only two other applicants from Buffalo.

Question for current UB students...how's this snow affecting you guys? I saw that the thruway was shut down for like 12hours near Buffalo. When I was at a different SUNY school we rarely got called off, but we also weren't right on the lake.

Hope everyone is safe and warm!

Its not a major issue, and the snow is something you get used to. The Thruway isn't necessary to get around, so you can find a way to get where you need to be. In my experience the past two years though, the city does a decent job of clearing snow, especially on major streets. I feel NYC does a much better job of plowing side streets though, and I understand Buffalo gets more snow, but plows rarely if ever go down side streets, so this makes everyday parking a big pain. If you live on a bus route though, those streets are plowed every evening. I was lucky to be in that situation, but then we couldn't park in front of our apartment from Thanksgiving to April 1st from midnight-8AM.

You shouldn't have a problem getting to and from campus or parking on campus somewhere. The only issues I've experienced is trying to find parking around Roswell Park Cancer Institute during the winter, if you don't want to pay the meter parking or don't have a pass to use the parking garage.

I'm in Buffalo, and the city and northern suburbs got basically no snow at all. Anything immediately south of the city got between 1 and 2 feet, which backed up the thruway quite a bit. There is basically a giant wall of snow that just ends very abruptly.

Like Longshanks said, it's not necessary to take the thruway to get around Buffalo. Everything is usually less than a 20 minute drive away, no matter what.

My status has been "NO ACTION" since end of September. Do they update this status if you are rejected or email us? I'm getting tired of stalking the status pages. :lame:

Its "random review", so who knows when you'll be looked at. A classmate of mine was complete first week possible, and didn't end up getting an invite until late March. He ended up getting accepted off the waitlist in May or June.

My status has been "NO ACTION" since early August. You're not alone 🙂.

As far as I know, "no action" means exactly what it sounds like. Anyone with this status has yet to be reviewed, and could certainly be invited for an interview any time. The last interview day for UB is in late April, and their class is not filled until then either.

Anyone know when they start rejections?

I know UB rejects a decent number of people immediately post-interview. They make decisions in 24 hours following an interview. Pre-interview, I'm not entirely sure.

Hey Guju, I hope you get into Downstate. UB and Downstate are both under-ranked and underrated for sure.

Yeah I think a lot of schools are really under rated that are great schools. Downstate,RFU, even some of the mid tier ranked schools that are often turned down by candidates for top tier ranked schools like BUSM and Tufts med which are often dropped for schools like Harvard and other top tens but in some ways provide better clinicals then some of the top research schools for someone whose goal is not academic medicine but being the best clinician they can be and I think it is quite sad that so many students are so obssessed with ranks that they don't see beyond the ranks when making their decisions on where to go.

I don't know what to expect from downstate but I hope you as a New Yorker get into several of the SUNYs. You deserve it.

Hey, thanks. I think more people are realizing how good the SUNY schools are, and it's becoming even tougher than ever to get in. With the economic decline, people that would give up seats for higher ranked schools will probably think twice about declining their SUNY acceptances.

UB, for example, received nearly 5000 applications this year, which is the highest volume they have ever received. Their roughly 600 interview spots have not increased to meet the new demand.

UB has always been my dream school, and I'm remaining optimistic that my chances of being accepted off the waitlist are decent. I'm pretty sure that all the med students I know at UB were accepted off the waitlist.

They already started pre interview rejections because me and a friend were already rejected from Buffalo pre interview.

I don't know about post interview rejections.

Overall I'm a reapplicant but to Buffalo specifically I was a first time applicant. I honestly only applied because my friend at GW, a few years ago was accepted there so I figured i'd see what happens. Not sure that it was a top choice so I can't say I'm too disappointed. Now downstate, I'd be a slight bit disappointed though not surprised if it doesn't go the way I want it to because well its downstate, 21 hospitals, within NYC proper, and an overall impressive but under rated place by many due to its not having a high rank..

I know my friend who was rejected was from west coast and applied also with buffalo not being a top choice but just because they thought they stood a shot based on msar statistics.

I wish you well.

Hey Gujudoc, if you don't mind me asking, when were you and your friend complete? I also have a friend who was rejected from UBuffalo pre-interview and she was complete around the same time as me. So I'm still hopefully waiting! :xf:

Don't know if this helps, but I was complete 9/22 and received an intervie invite on 10/11. UB is random review, so the fact that you haven't heard back is really nothing to worry about. Your chances are still very much alive.🙂

I don't believe UB is random review, although there is no true source for that. A few people stated this at the beginning of this thread. That said, the later you apply, the more backed up they are, so the longer the waits will be. No sense worrying until it's been multiple months at the least.

At first, the rumor was they were no longer random review. Someone posted up an e-mail though they received from UB, near the beginning of the thread, stating that it is indeed still "random review", and their website seems to hint at this.

Oh I see the post you are referring to. I have to say, I don't think "random review" means it's "totally random", but rather that they do not go in order necessarily. It just seems highly unlikely that a school as organized as Buffalo (and of all of the places I've interviewed at, they were, by far, the most organized) would "randomly" pull applications. I'd take a bet that they use some sort of criteria to filter them, considering it is to their benefit to interview people they like the most, first.

Anyway, this is all speculation and pretty irrelevant to all of us at this stage in the game.

I agree - its probably a mix like that. I'm just hoping to hear back from a SUNY :xf:, and I've liked my graduate experience here for the most part and the city of Buffalo grew on me.

Well best of luck to you. Buffalo disappointed me and put me on the waitlist, although I suppose their waitlist is much better than most other ones. Luckily I have one acceptance elsewhere, so there's at least no more stress. I have to say, I liked Buffalo much more than I expected, and my uncle actually lives only ten minutes from the school.

Good luck to you too. The waitlist isn't so bad here. If you're in the upper or mid tier it moves pretty well. A classmate of mine was in the middle third last year, after getting an interview in March, and he was accepted sometime in June.

Soooooo true. Buffalo's giving only 24 hours to decide and moving on to the next person if the person doesn't decide in 24 hours system of running the waitlist makes it move pretty quickly.

To be fair, the 24 hour deadline is only relevant after May 15. Before then, it's generally an easy decision to accept, since you do not have to give up any other offers at that time. That said, I think that's a ridiculously short period for afterwards. I suppose the saving grace is you really only have to decide between the school you currently hold an acceptance to, and theirs, but I certainly would like more time if I was put in that position.

Thanks guys! Do you know if calling the school to show interest works? I would really like an interview here as I've been to buffalo several times before and have family close to the area but I am an OOS applicant so that might be a major disadvantage since it is a state school.

I'm also on the waitlist, and while it's not fun, our chances at UB are actually surprisingly good. I can also see why it would be extremely difficult for anyone with multiple acceptances to choose UB within a 24 hour window after May 15th.

For me, it's an easy decision. If I'm accepted off the waitlist to UB, I'm committing immediately, since it's my hometown state school and number one choice.

Well yeah that's what I meant, meaning post may 15th, but that's when most waitlist movement starts anyhow. Most people hold on to their multiple acceptances til the last second they can to make sure they've thought their decision through.

And yes realistically anyone would like more time. In most cases it sucks for the ones waiting. In this school's case I think it sucks more for the ones who have a decision to make then the ones waiting. lol.

But I feel like buffalo is one of those schools because of its location in upstate new york that a lot of people either really want to go to or really don't want to go to and therefore have a less difficult time deciding between vs. other schools like the nyc schools vs. each other or other schools in similar cities, seeing as most people in general are obssessed with big city schools based on my observations in real life and on here of people in general.

I guess the waiting isn't that bad for UB's waitlist, it's just the uncertainty that's getting to me, since I currently have no acceptances.

Also, Buffalo/WNY is definitely a real love it or hate it type of place. I happen to love it, so UB is perfect for me. At my interview, I got the feeling that many of the candidates weren't so passionate about the Buffalo area, and mostly applied to UB for the sake of increasing the chance of any acceptance.

The final class roster has a high percentage of people taken off the waitlist, so I think the people that really want Buffalo really do end up there in the end.

Yeah and for that reason I hope you get into Buffalo and several other sunys as a new yorker. I'm keeping you in my prayers when I see these SUNY threads. and yeah I agree with everything you've stated above.

Thanks! It's really nice of you to say that!

Yeah, I got waitlisted too (3.97, 36R). I interviewed on 11/17, so I may have met you, Maxwell, though I don't particularly remember any names from that day.

I mentioned something earlier about UB not having random review this year. The reason I said that was that there was a very noticeable omission of any mention of random review in the email this year relative to last year (I'm a reapplicant). And if you look at the people who got early invites and if you spoke with some of the people who interviewed earlier you'd notice that the early interviewees tend to be more qualified. Having said that, they do see to wait to notify some of the more competitive applicants later on, and they waitlist a ton to keep more room for later interviewees, but I highly highly doubt their review is truly random.

We probably did meet on the interview day, and I don't recall any names either, just faces. If you met anyone from Buffalo, it was probably me.

Anyway, those are some crazy stats. The fact that you were waitlisted reinforces the point that UB barely hands out any outright acceptances, and prefers to leave seats open throughout the season. At some schools, a waitlist is almost a rejection. At UB, a waitlist is a likely acceptance.

I'm from Buffalo too..and I recall meeting quite a few other people from Buffalo as well so I think there were more locals than you think. Congrats on the waitlist! I was wondering if anyone got accepted from the 11/17 date? Everyone I met that day was so nice and... "normal"? Nothing like most of the pre-meds I've met elsewhere...Anyways, Good luck to all of us!

If you recall meeting anyone from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, that was me. I also did get a sense that everyone was normal and didn't have the typical backstabbing Type A personalities we stereotype premeds to have. Quite refreshing, actually. Also, congrats to you and katekat for the waitlist!

Thanks! Buffalo isn't the city of good neighbors for nothing. That was my first and only interview so far, and I also thought everyone was normal and friendly.

I actually remember you extremely well. We sat next to each other at the table, and talked quite a bit throughout the whole day. I won the Rensselaer medal in high school, but chose UB for undergrad, because RPI was still too expensive. Does that give away who I am?

There are no acceptances that I know of from the 11/17 group, just waitlists. You, me, Terbum, and someone else I know personally makes 4 people on the waitlist from our interview day.

If you haven't already, out last year's UB waitlist thread:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=718639

It's very encouraging when you see all the acceptances at the end.🙂

Everyone is mentioning how nice and normal the interviewees were on 11/17, and I thought the same thing. If I get more interviews, it's going to be interesting to see what the applicants are like at other schools.

Just an FYI, I do know of 2 acceptances from the 11/17 group, so you guys may have just been on a real competitive day! Don't give up yet, plenty of time.

That's good to know that at least 2 people were accepted outright from the 11/17 group. I agree that it's still early and there is plenty of time. Being waitlisted at UB in November really isn't so bad. I'm really happy that I made it this far, and that I wasn't rejected on 11/18.

If you don't mind me asking, were you accepted outright, or off the waitlist? What month was your acceptance in relation to your interview?

Do you guys think those of who interviewed earlier in the season, i.e. sept-nov and got waitlisted, will be offered acceptances during the winter months or most likely late spring/early summer?

Does anyone know how receptive UB is to pre-interview letters of interest? I really want an interview here!! 😉
