Does anyone know the best way to get there? I will be flying, so is there a preferred airport to fly into and then will there be a shuttle to campus area? Also, I didn't see anything about student hosting, so I assume we should book hotels as it suggests in the email?

Hi everyone, I submitted the online application but didn't download that form you have to send in for residency determination. Now when I go back to the verified secondary page online, I can't get the form! Anyone know where to find it?

Thanks!

Go to the FAQ section on the secondary website, you can download the form underneath "How do I apply for Maryland Residency status?"

Hey guys, do you know what kind of area the school is located in? I am thinking about adding univ. maryland but don't know if the location would be a good place to relocate the family to.

Thanks!

The area itself isn't spectacular, but there are several decent areas right outside of Baltimore. Howard County is one of the best. My sister and her husband live in Ellicott City, MD, and it is very safe. They are school teachers who commute to eastern Baltimore for work and the drive is very quick. It is about 20 minutes away from the med school campus. I've visited myself several times. It is a very nice/charming historic town with basically no crime.

Soooo nervous. Going to the interview tomorrow!!!😱

You will be fine! I hear the interview is real laid back and conversational. Mine is a week from tomorrow, I am getting a little nervous as well to be honest.

Hi all,

What address to I mail the residency form to? Is it the same as the Office of Admissions??

Health Sciences Facility I
685 W. Baltimore Street, Suite 190
Baltimore, MD 21201

Thanks!

Awesome!! Are you an instate applicant? Did you go to a state school? (UMBC/UMCP/Towson/Etc) I just want to gauge my chances at an interview!

you are done with your interview? how was it???
Wow, I really had a great experience there, I actually though there would be a faculty and student interview but the 2 interviews ended up being both faculty. The facilities and academic presentation were both amazing. Dean Foxwell seems really personable and takes a genuine interest in each and every student. Very impressive school as a whole.

Dr. Foxwell is the man, he has amazing "horrible interview stories" if you get a chance to ask. He told me about one person who came into the interview and took his shoes off haha. Who does that!?

Are there any current students on here who can answer questions?

What is the social life at Maryland? Do the students hang out outside of class and are there things to do in that part of the city? Are there activities and clubs available for the med students? Just trying to get a sense of the day to day life there.

Having interviewed at Maryland, I must say that I experienced a mixed bag of feelings after my interview day. My first interviewer described Maryland's classes as inherently competitive. He said that there are a bunch of type A personalities, which you will find at all med schools. I was definitely put off by this. My second interviewer was very nice, and I enjoyed my discussion with her.

Overall, the school was very nice: modern facilities and huge/beautiful hospital. The library literally made my jaw drop: very impressive. Also, the new student center/gym is really spectacular: you get an amazing view of Camden Yards and M&T Bank stadium as you pump iron!

Dont let this put you off. it's true about all medical schools. we didn't get there by being lazy. people are very helpful with one another, and grading is not on a curve, so you are not actually competing with one another for grades.

many people hang out all the time, and there are tons of things to do. hopefully someone can answer the socialization aspect of your question better than me! (or if you have some specific questions, those will be easier to answer than "is there stuff to do?"). some people go climbing, lots of people play sports. there are dance classes taught by second years weekly, or go running together. there are so many clubs its actually impossible for me to list them, but they will be on the umb website somewhere.

Day to day life...is the life of med student crixx. go to school, go to library, (go to gym), go home, repeat. you can mix up this order to spice up your life. 😉

I'm not a med student but live across the street from the UMB campus. As far as stuff to do in that part of the city, there definitely is. The med campus is downtown and near a lot of really cool areas. Federal hill has tons of bars if your into that sort of thing. The campus is also really close to the stadiums if you like going to sports games. There's a good amount of night clubs, concert halls and venues nearby if you like music. There's tons of amazing restaurants a few miles north in Mt. Vernon.

Although this city doesn't have the same amount of stuff to do as bigger cities like NYC or Philly, I am usually pretty content with the nightlife. If anyone wants more details, feel free to PM me!

agree...downtown bmore is awesome

Thanks for chiming in guys. also, just to add. there is at least 1 or 2 happy hours a month thrown by the class officers at local bars. they always get good deals. and the night after exams, there are always big parties at bars too.

the school encourage a lot of interaction btw first and second years, so these events, even though they are not on campus are almost always joint events.

Hey guys. I have my interview this Wednesday, Sept 29th. Right now I am just going over my research from the past two summers from my labs, reviewing my application and extra-curriculars, and formulating my respones to obvious questions like why UMD and why medicine. But other than that, any last minute advice to do in the 2 days before my interview? I have heard that it is fairly laid back so I'm just trying to remain calm and stay social in there, I usually don't have a problem with that at all. But any last minute advice from previous interviewers would be extremely helpful. Looking forward to Wednesday, both to see the school and get my first interview over with haha.

Just got invited for an interview today. (figured I'd post this since I have kept checking to see when other people have gotten invited, I'm returning the favor now.)

Interview invite today, never got a complete email but I submitted my secondary on 9/9

Congrats to those who just received interviews! For those who haven't, I know people who didn't get invites until March, so don't give up hope.

I interviewed here and it was relaxed. I was definitely impressed with the students, the facilities (the new student center was super nice), and the faculty. All of the faculty I met seemed really friendly and approachable. My interview was really relaxed and my interviewers were friendly, sweet and easy to talk to.

I haven't received invites from any of the other 13 schools I applied to, but that's OK I'd love to go to this school!

ps: The veggie sandwich was bangin

I interviewed here today (Sep 29th) and I can honestly say that I was totally blown away by the school and its presentations. I had heard so much about Dean Foxwell but everything was right on the dot; he is truly a down-to-earth man who seems to have a legitimate interest in every one of the students there. My two interviews (one with a Radiologist and another with a PHD in Biochemistry) were absolutely fantastic. They were in a completely laid back setting and seemed to be more conversational than the "intense grilling sesssion" that I was expecting. Overall, I am in love with UMD and would easily place it at the top of my list. Apparently they start sending out decisions on October 15th, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed until then... it would be the best early-Christmas present ever haha. Good luck to everyone!

Interview Invite yesterday! Complete by website status 9/2, Interview date 11/8! In State loveee

Rejection letter in the mail 🙁 Reapplied this year, but I guess my MCAT score is too low. I enjoyed working here though at the med school. Life goes on! Best of luck to everyone!

I received a rejection letter via mail today as well. Best of luck to the rest of you!

I was wondering if any current students or recent interviewees had some more advice on the school. I'm OOS and have an interview invite for two Mondays from now, but I'm having doubts on whether I should attend or if I should withdraw my application and save myself a couple hundred dollars on transportation & hotel room.

I've attended three interviews already, one of which was at my home state school and one at Mount Sinai which I LOVED. 2 out of the 3 are pass/fail schools, and they all said it's a wonderful atmosphere to not have to worry about grades. The ABC system at UMD makes me extremely nervous now in terms of how much time students feel like they have to study to make the A's and good rankings amongst themselves.

I don't feel comfortable turning down an interview with no acceptances yet. But I don't want to waste money on a school I already feel slightly uncomfortable with based on the grading policy. I also am not sure how I would convince the faculty there that I would be a future permanent resident in Maryland. Despite liking the location, I have no real solid reasons haha.

I guess what I would like to know: are there any huge pros or things at UMD that current students did not find offered at any other schools?? Any reasons for me to possibly attend UMD with no real connections to the state?

Thanks a ton 🙂

Honestly, you have 3 interviews and no acceptances and you're considering not going to an interview?

What I would do is wait till after Oct 15 and see if you get accepted to any of the schools you've interviewed at. If you get in, then withdraw your interview. If not, you better attend in case you don't get in the other schools.

I've interviewed at 5 schools (including Maryland) so far and have 2 more lined up (including Mt Sinai and Emory). I wouldn't think of rejecting an interview at this point until I hear back from some of those 5 schools (particularly one I would be happy attending).

Everything you said boils down to this. Nothing is guaranteed. The schools you've interviewed at are not sure bets, especially Mount Sinai. If you were from the west coast you might have a better case for canceling this interview due to cost, but until you are accepted somewhere I'd suck it up and give the credit cards a workout.

I say this being very nervous about the letter grading system myself and having a friend who is a MSI at Maryland and seems to be under a lot of stress.

yeah that's what my "better safe than sorry" sense of self is saying too. unfortunately my interview is Mon Oct 18th, so I would have had arrangements made by then and would feel bad canceling over the weekend so last minute. it is more sensible to keep the interview (unless I hear back on the 15th or over that weekend), I guess I just wanted some bashing over the head reminders from all of you.

if i had planned better ahead of time, I should've scheduled the interview for the week after the 18th or something...oh well!

this is the answer I gave to the incoming class last year about grades. Seriously, it's no big deal. Every school ranks their students. And sooner or later, you realize that you just have to study almost all the time. It's not worse bc of the grades:

I just wanted to throw out an answer to a question I get from all of you interviewing students.

Maryland does give out grades, A,B,C etc.

However, this does not foster a environment of competitiveness. This is due to the fact that there is NO CURVE. You get a 80, that's a B. You get a 95 and so does everyone else? great, A for everyone.

When folks find an awesome website that helped them learn a difficult concept, the first thing they often do is email it to the whole class. This was a bit foreign to me coming from a hypercompetitive environment, but it's easy to get used to.

Thanks for your insight. I think with all the blind love fore P/F on sdn, it's easy to immediately assume that grading schools will make things competitive.

I have a couple questions about the interview for whoever is familiar with the process. What time should we expect to get out? It says on the itinerary End: 4-4:30pm but how accurate is this? I'm wondering if I should schedule my train @ Penn Station for 4:47pm or 5:45pm... Can I make it to the station in time for the 4:47?? thanks!

Interview invite today!

Complete 9/24
Invited 10/13
Interview 12/8 (rescheduling though)

OOS love!

To current students/applicants familar with UMD's acceptances... Does anybody know about what day they begin to notify applicants? Obviously the first official date would be Oct. 15, but any word on how UMD does this? And is it snail mail, phone call, email? I interviewed on Sept 29th, very excited to hear back from MD, definitely a top choice of mine. Thanks

you could definitely hear back tomorrow! traditionally, first round goes out by snail mail. They sometimes send it the 15th, or get it to you by the 15th. sometimes calls go out, it can be variable, also dependent on how far from bmore you live.

but you very well could find out tomorrow. I think, when i got in, a couple of years ago now, I got a package by mail on the 16th.

Dr. Foxwell said he would get back to us on the 15th. A lot of times its a phone call but I hear people get snail mail acceptance packets as well.

when did you interview? i was there on one of the first interview days (so pretty early) and dr. foxwell said we would hear within a week of 10/15... so excited, so nervous.

I interviewed on the 29th. I am very excited as well, trying my best to keep my mind off it.

Funny, we interviewed same day but I have absolutely no idea who you are haha. Anyways, as we are in the same boat, will you be looking out for a phone call tomorrow, or just expecting something in the mail later (and that is assuming we are on the list to get something at all"). I remember him saying that we would hear within about 2 weeks, yesterday was two weeks exactly, and the first day we could hear is tomorrow, the 15th. I don't what to feel, excited/nervous/wanting to just get through this whole thing and have it be something of the past haha. Please people, if you hear anything via call, mail, ect, PLEASE post here so I know what to be looking out for. thanks
