Hi,

I just recently had an interview at Umass medical school and I was hoping someone could tell me how long you had to wait for an acceptance or rejection or waitlist. thanks

Some get lucky and find out in a few weeks, others wait months on end.

hi,

i was wondering if any had an idea of the accpetance rate of those who get an interviewed. during your interview day did they give you an idea of the number interviewed and those that get accpeted and waitlisted. thanks for your help.

yes. 600 interviewed, 125 in the class. They gave they impression that it was something like 180 accepted. Odds are not good.

Every four weeks they'll release a little bit of info on a Friday. They usually only release a bit of news at a time. Usually they send out the majority of the decisions in April sometime. So basically its a little trickle of information followed by a massive wave.

Hopefully most people will hear in a month or so.

Thanks a lot. Although, that information, along with this quote from earlier

"From my experience last year, students who were accepted found out before April. Then at the very beginning of April and then throughout the whole month, people were either waitlisted or rejected. Waitlisted students were then taken off slowly until about June - some heard really quickly, like days, then others like myself waited months. So hopefully this year by April, you will have heard something from the school. Don't worry so much about the deadlines, you will hear before May 15th. I think the school just tells you that because they can't promise a specific date when students will get a decision."

seem to suggest that it doesn't look good for those of us who haven't heard back post-interview (or even worse, pre-interview). Sorry to be pessimistic. Good luck to everyone!

Umm.... those odds are phenomenal. 1 in 3 that interview get in? That isn't good? When I applied I thought I had a great shot, it gave me hope in my 9 months of waiting before being accepted. It was like I gestated a little med school baby.

Also someone was talking earlier about the demographics of our class... its essentially identical to the demographics of the population of MA, and I have a very, very good source from high up that tells me they strive to emulate the MA population. So yeah, GL guys... and for those of you that got in GO ON MOE in August, us 2nd years are throwing you a fantastic weekend.

Don't be pessimistic! I was waitlisted in April, got in May 18th... along with many of my classmates. Keep up hope, and if things end up not working out make sure you get your app in early (like June 1st early)

Um, no I don't think those odds are phenomenal. Having already been rejected once from UMass I know that, numbers wise, I'm more likely than not to be rejected again. In fact, I'm twice as likely to be rejected as accepted. And at many other places if you interview you are at least as likely as not be accepted.

I do tend to be pessimistic though so others are free to look at the numbers however they want. 😎

You know you aren't rolling a dice right? And in the year between this year and last, if you've done anything to improve your application at all, you've probably increased your chances of getting in, especially if you got another interview? They don't give interviews to people that haven't improved in the year between. The older you get, the more experienced you become - and that leads to a smooth transition into medical school (something we love here).

Have hope

Hi,

does anyone know when the send out acceptances? is it every friday and is it by email or mail?

Hey guys,

How are we supposed to submit the forms for financial aid? Can we email them to the office or do we have to mail them in?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

thanks for all the responses to my prior posts. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they know if one can get financial aid for housing and living expenses? Most medical schools have room and board which financial aid can be applied to. Is it expected for a medical student to pay able to go to school and work to pay for food and housing? any info or opinions would greatly be appreciated.

Hey Silvera,

They factor in housing, living expenses, car expenses, etc into your financial aid. I don't think any medical schools expect students to be supporting themselves with a job on the side. That would just be abusive 🙂

Any news today, anyone? It looks like March 4th was the last time they sent out acceptances? 🙁

That's what it looks like form last year's thread. There might be a few random acceptances, but I'm starting to think we're all looking at WL or rejections from here on out. April is going to stress me out.

I am not looking forward to April. This has been the longest wait of my life. 😡

Tell me about it! Can't believe I've been waiting 6 months now. Anyway, I kinda lost hopes for a straight up acceptance after awhile, but now I'm just hoping its not a rejection.

I know it sucks guys, just try to stay positive!

I was waitlisted 9 months after my interview... and now I'm sitting here studying for infections and immunology, so don't give up hope!

Hi,

i was hoping someone who has been accepted could tell me if the page where you complete the secondary application get updated after you are accepted. does the green dot meaning application complete under student center tab gets changed to a green check. I was hoping someone could tell me since I don't seem to receive emails from UMass for some reason. Thanks.

Yes. It becomes a green check after you get an acceptance e-mail.

....and i'm nervous as hells bells. i know it isn't 4 wks after march 4th.....but doesn't umass need to fill a certain amt by march 30th?? its like aamc suggested or something.

C'MONNNNNN PLS UMASS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thingy you're referring to is just a recommendation...they have no way of holding a school to that. I highly doubt they'll release info today. Give it another week

Does anyone know what time of day acceptances are announced. Is it early morning or evening ? Thanks

Morning, maybe? Look at previous posts, and check the times. I'm hoping to hear some waitlist news this Friday. Thoughts, anyone?

I received mine at exactly 11:37 AM. I think that question was answered in an earlier post somewhere.

I just e-mailed Admissions but their answer wasn't helpful at all.

Does anyone know whether UMMS require CSS Profile? It doesn't mention it anywhere but I know some schools, such as BU requires it so I just want to be extra sure. Thanks in advance.

They do require one if you applying for both institutional aid and Stafford Loans (they do not require it if you are applying for Stafford Loans only). They do require parental information (despite the fact that we are considered "independent". They DO NOT require parental information on the FAFSA.

When is the deadline for financial aid stuff? For the people who may not be waitlisted and accepted until the end of April, do they allow some time for financial aid papers and also FAFSA? How does it all work? Any info is appeciated.

Thanks

I would get working on your FAFSA, tax returns and (if needed the CSS Profile) as soon as since you have only four weeks after acceptance to get the materials in.

For stafford loans only, you complete the FAFSA, but for institutional aid, you need both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile.

For any type of financial aid, there are several forms to fill out and photocopies of tax returns and W-2s. Since most schools require the FAFSA, it's good to get it out of the way, plus it's free.

From their website:
School of Medicine : April 20, 2011 or four weeks after acceptance if accepted after March 20, 2011

I would consult the main financial aid website for more information.

Hopefully not the *last date* since I just interviewed! 🙂

Also wondering if there are any out there who interviewed recently and heard back already?

I interviewed mid-October and was accepted late November. Some of you may have interviewed later in the month than the committee meets. I have a friend who interviewed this month and still has not heard back.

For those in the thread who are already at UMass, and since the discussion has drifted towards financial aid, can you comment on the UMMS budget? During the interview day the student ambassadors told us that living within or significantly below the budget is manageable due to the moderate COL in Worcester and other factors. Can others comment if this is universal and if so by what margin?

I'm curious because many people I have spoken with are under the impression that UMass costs next to nothing, but when you compare the numbers you find that although the savings compared to a private school are significant, the cost of attending is still quite high. I think when I ran the 4-year numbers it came out to about $180k for UMMS and $300k at a private school.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hey guys, I have a quick question for those who have already been accepted. I recently received an email from the registrar's office regarding class registration and a few forms that need to be filled out. I followed the link that they provided but I can't find the forms. Am I looking in the wrong place or have other people encountered the same issue?

Thanks!

Why such low expectations? I don't think they've given out every single acceptances yet.
looking at threads from previous years no acceptances went out after the first week of march - same this year, and first wait lists went out first Friday in April - so I was hoping it would be the same

Did you interview after March 4th?

I agree with BullDog4Eva, there could still be acceptances given out today. Just because no one reported acceptances after the first week of March, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Plus, who says that the admission committee has to do the same thing as previous years.

I know that this process is exhausting and sucks all your optimism, but you got to stay positive. It's the only way to get through it and stay sane.

I am also praying for at least a waitlist. And this has nothing to do with being a downer... there is such a thing as positive pessimism (although I don't even see waiting for a waitlist pessimism really). Setting low expectations prepares people for the blow if it comes, and then you can still celebrate when good news arrives. :luck: But I mean, whatever works for ya

You are right, but if they are given out, it would most likely be recent interviews, and since I interviewed at the beginning of October, I highly doubt I would be one of those people. They have had 6 months to accept me at this point...

They don't have to, but if waitlists have always gone out in April, and last year it just happened to be at the beginning, then I can hope for that. Also, hoping for a waitlist isn't pessimism, getting the waitlist at Umass would be great!

Come on UMASS, give us something!! I am just a few days away from losing my mind. 👍

Ahh come on Umass! I need a decision! 6.5 months of waiting is making me crazy

Last year, the first posting of someone being waitlisted was at 2:46 PM on the first Friday of April. Anything from anybody?!?!

Everybody needs to chill out. The wait is annoying but there's no rush

Hey Bosscientist,

Is this the link you are following: http://www.umassmed.edu/registrar/MedAccepted.aspx?linkidentifier=id&itemid=11238

I just visited it and it worked for me. If it still doesn't, let me know and I can just email you the forms.

Just talked to 2 friends who interviewed late feb/early march last year. They got their acceptance/waitlist on april 22nd. and looking at the past threads, that is a pretty good estimate of when we should be expecting to hear back. UMass~
