i interviewed on the same day, too. i called them up and asked them about my app status, and they said my file wasn't reviewed yet, and would be on january 26 instead. so that's most likely your case, too

sweet, streudel-man, we will just have to be patient. thanks for the info, kids!

I'm a 4th year at Miami, if anyone has questions, I'm open. About Miami or med school or whatever. I'll take PMs but please try and post in the open so everyone can benefit if possible.

They will just send it in the mail if you qualify... not need to fill anything out

There is actually a form to fill out if you are looking for a need based/ diversity scholarship. I don't know the link but if you google it, I think it is pretty easy to find. The link should be in your acceptance letter as well.

Other than the rates last year. What are my chances or odds of getting off the alternate list? Also, when will they start pulling people off the alternate list?

A woman from admissions told me May 15th but I have heard stories of people getting called right before the first day of class.

May 15th is just when it starts not when it ends.

Waitlist movement works as such.

People with multiple acceptances must drop other acceptances and hang onto only one by May 15th but may hold onto as many waitlist spots. At that point, waitlist movement stops as people have dropped seats at schools.

then if u get off a waitlist and have another acceptance in hand u have 1-2 weeks at most places to choose between the two schools but can still hold onto other waitlists. People who only have waitlists get their chance to get off at this point.

It goes on like this til the end of summer sometimes til right before school starts in the month of august.
Thanks for the thorough response

That's correct. You could get an acceptance any time from one minute from now to the day before school starts. And unfortunately, it's very difficult to predict the chances of the happening. Generally the wait lists for harvard, hopkins, etc. don't move much. But Miami should have at least a dozen or two (likely more) spots to fill before school starts.

Yes. They told me during the interview that last year they only needed two or three people from the wait list which was hopefully an anomaly. But that is the theme I have heard from almost all my interviews so far.

How is the financial aid package in terms of survival if you will not be getting any parental support whatsoever and have nobody to cosign for additional private loans. No need for exact figures (unless you want to PM them to me), just need to know whether it's doable

Last year didn't they have to close one of their campuses thus decreasing the need to take people from a waitlist. (because they had to take all the people already accepted at the other campus)

They did not mention that to my interview group. They said that those who they offered acceptances too simply accepted them back. That's also what I heard at other schools.

PLease create one and I'll join! 🙂

Well I'm not completely decided yet so I wouldn't be the one to start one up. I just know that some other schools have implemented a fb page to connect those that have been accepted.

Yeah basically FAU med severed ties with UMiami realizing it is now time to make it an independent med school. So the kids from the FAU-Umiami affiliation are brought into the UMiami main program.

So it would make sense class of 2014 kids were also ushered into the main program for Miami and now sole program for Umiami.

I hope FAU's med apps come out soon. Supposed to come out in Feb. once the LCME comes over there and officially gives them the green light.
My source on their adcom told me feb. 1, thru amcas, no formal secondary and rapid-fire interview season to fill up 64 seats.. I'll DM you once I hear for sure. Fingers crossed I don't have to even do it bc I interviewed at UM a wk and a halfish ago and am totally in love

I'm not sure i totally understand the question, so if I don't answer it then please clarify. It's more than doable. Cities like New York are very difficult to live in on a med student loan, but Miami isn't bad, especially if you have a roommate. I pay $500 per month in a house with 3 other guys. Some people live on southbeach. The max you can take out is different per year, but is usually around 28000 per year for living expenses. Which is almost like getting paid 35000 per year if you had a job and taxes were deducted. You won't be living in a two story luxury condo overlooking the bay, but you'll still have fun.

Thank you for the response. The financial aid offices at each school dictate the cost of attendance and thus how much you can loan (non-privately), but at some schools there isn't a whole lot left over after tuition for rent, transportation, food lol. It is nice to know that living in Miami won't be financially unreasonable.

👍

Last year didn't they have to close one of their campuses thus decreasing the need to take people from a waitlist. (because they had to take all the people already accepted at the other campus)

There were only about 10 students who were added to the accept list last year as a result of FAU's decision. The remaining 30 or so who were accepted to the FAU campus were also accepted to the UM campus so they didn't have to be transferred over.

Some other points to clear up...

You can expect to wait between 4-6 weeks (holidays excluded) to hear back about your application.

You will only receive a phone call if you are accepted. Otherwise you will get some kind of written notification that you were wait listed or rejected.

As someone mentioned, there will be no movement on the alternate list until May 15th and we will accept people off the alternate list up until the day school starts (crazy I know). Schools have little control over this since it comes down to how soon people we accept get back to us. Sometimes people hold spots until the week before class starts and then drop it, so when it opens up we call the next person ASAP.

Let me know if anything needs clarification...

That's 4-6 weeks to hear back after your interview. Time between being complete and being notified about an interview varies greatly.

Wow, really? When I was there, they made it seem like I might hear back after their next adcom. if all the forms were filled out by my interviewer for it.

Not that this adds anything to the discussion but I heard this on the radio and couldn't help but smile

anyone here get a certiphi background check e-mail? was it sent regardless of whether you were waitlisted/accepted at miami?

The committee meets bi-weekly so I think at least 4 weeks is a reasonable turn around to expect, though it can be sooner if the interviewer is very efficient.

I am confused, I interview on 1/10-1/11 at Miami for the MD/MPH program and in Miami we were told we would hear back today. At first I thought it was because of the MD.MPH folks, but there were only 3 of us, the rest were all just MD applicants.

About how many MD-only applicants were at your interview?

Still haven't heard a word. Complete in Sept.

I do not want to start an arguing match here, but I am curious to know what everyone thinks about UM vs. UF med schools from an in state perspective? (tuition wise)😕

I'm biased (see screen name), but UM > UF. We consistently match better for residency anyway. And as far as location, Miami >>>>>>> Gainesville. Not just for recreation either. When you're learning medicine, the ideal setting is somewhere that has a huge population to draw on and lots of "underserved." You want to see a diversity of pathology, really sick patients, and typically uninsured, illegal immigrants (of all cities in the US, I'd say Miami has the most) are much more ammenable to med students. You'll get very little "hands on" experience working with high class rich legal citizens. You think they'll let you do a lumbar puncture on them?? Yeah right! Maybe this isn't politically correct, but it's sooooo true. I have some friends at Michigan who have never, I repeat, NEVER seen a patient with AIDS. HIV posivite sure, but all well controlled. That's great for the patient, but not for the student of medicine. I'd be ashamed if I graduated med school never having seen someone with AIDS. VIP patient = very little learning for a med student. You can't beat Miami for pathology. Some places are somewhat comparable (USC-LA county, UTSW Parkland, NYU Bellview, NYP-Columbia), but certainly not places in small towns (UF, Duke, Dartmouth, Mayo etc.). The first two years of med school are slightly different between schools. Slightly. The last two are VASTLY different between schools and that's what most premeds don't consider. You learn from your patients. Sorry for the rant!

ACCEPTED!!! just got the call, i was speechless and i couldn't feel my hands. accepted to both the MD and MD/MPH program!!

interviewed 12/6-7

Omg! I got the call like 2 minutes after 5pm! The M4 student who interviewed me called, I could not believe it. My brother, sister-in-law, my mother, and the bird (Max) were all yelling behind me while I was on the phone. Miami here I come! Yay!

nope, it was a med student who called me. best day ever

A med student called you? Hate to break it to you, but you just got PRANKED!!!

LOL, totally kidding my friend. Congrats. You've worked really hard and deserve it. I remember the feeling, it's so awesome. Way better than chocolate. Wait, I went too far. . .

I didn't think med students were doing it now. Interesting. When I applied every acceptance was through email.

I think it depends on if you had a med student interviewer. Two of the applicants I've kept in touch with only received an email and no call.

Let me preface my opinion by saying I agree with a lot of what UMiami75 has said here. Miami has an AMAZINGLY diverse population to draw patients from. Students attending UM will see a large quantity of interesting patients and pathology.

That being said, I must disagree with UMiami75 regarding his opinion on UF vs UM match list. In my personal opinion, they are quite comparable with no school having real "edge." However, UM students are much more likely to match into In-city residency programs at Jackson Memorial and other hospital programs within the medical campus. You can see this as a good or a bad thing. Miami has many great residency programs, but I prefer to see a more diverse set of programs around the country when looking at a match list. Of course, it is quite possible that students attending UM medical school just really love Miami and choose to stay there.

As a side note, I am not reppin UF COM (I am not a huge fan). Nor am I just trolling UM MSM thread (I have been accepted for the C/O 2015). I just wanted to give an unbiased current-applicant opinion on this matter. In the end, either school will give you a great medical education. What you have to ask yourself as an applicant is, "Does the more diverse population and culture of Miami that will affect your clinical years make up for the larger price tag?" For some it does, for other it does not.

It has nothing to do with the number of people interviewing for which program and everything to do with how quickly your interviewer completed his paperwork and if they submitted it in time for the next meeting. Like I said, about 4-6 weeks from the interview day.

I see what you're saying, but why I am confused is that this is what we were told verbatum by Dr Weisman at the interview day....we were actually surprised it would be so soon.

I really hope its not 6 weeks because that would give be past the Feb 15th date to choose between MD and MD/MPH- should I get in at least.

Thanks though! I was just confused because we were told something specific at the interview and it doesnt seem to jive with whats been the reality.

I was wondering if anyone knew what time classes started each morning. I think I forgot to ask, or it might not have been said on my tour/interview day. Also, what day do classes start in August?

Thank you! Congrats to everyone accepted!

Dr. Weisman told you a specific date, which was the date of the next committee meeting. If your interviewer has completed your paperwork by that date you would have likely been notified of the committee's decision.

My point was that how soon you hear back has nothing to do with the number of people interviewing for which program at your interview. If your MD/MPH, you will definitely hear well before the Feb 15th deadline. And if your ever getting really worried, just call the admissions office.

I assume the alternate list here is their politically correct billing for the waiting list? Sorry if this has already been discussed or if Dr. Weisman mentions it in the afternoon round-up, I had an afternoon interview and missed his concluding remarks

Congrats to those accepted!

For all of you who were accepted into the MD/MPH and the MD program, what do you think you will decide and why?

Where have people heard about the Feb. 15th internal deadline to choose between MD and MD/MPH? I've been accepted to both and don't remember ever being told that.

i think it really depends on your interests, but i was really attracted to miami's md/mph program from the start. i don't think i can go through med school without the public health/community component included, and the fact that the program teaches both at the same time (compared to other programs, where you take an additional year to take only public health courses) is a definite plus. you become conditioned to continually contextualize issues/concerns in medicine within public health. granted, you can do that with the md degree by itself, but it's great to have a program that guides you in that respect. not to mention the fact that it's the inaugural year of the md/mph program, where -- and you can see this as either an advantage or disadvantage -- i think we'll be given many opportunities to help shape the program. you'll also be surrounded by like-minded students and instructors who are interested in those aspects of medicine.

i suppose one of the disadvantages would be the fact that we'll be rotating in boca raton -- not in miami, with the jackson memorial hospital -- but i figure that we'll have M1 and M2 to gain some kind of experience at jackson, and then M3 and M4 to rotate around the JFK medical center, where i suspect we'll be able to forge closer relationships with the physicians while at the same time work with the dept of public health in the area, which has a great public health model. i plan to do a global health-oriented residency/fellowship after med school, and ultimately aim to work with the medically underserved (idealistic, yes, but i grew up in an area of strong social disparity, so it's pretty personal to me), so having an mph is practically a necessity. and the fact that it finishes in 4 years isn't bad either.

Where have people heard about the Feb. 15th internal deadline to choose between MD and MD/MPH? I've been accepted to both and don't remember ever being told that.

i think i remember hearing it at the orientation meeting.

So, I just got accepted recently and I'm going here unless some crazy scholarship offer comes up. Couple questions: 1. Has anyone started looking into places to live? 2. Has anyone received any scholarship info? Thanks!

Congrats to those accepted!

you can come back to miami for your 4th year and do rotations at Jackson, so really, you're just leaving for one year. Don't get me wrong, that's still a hassle, but it can also provide different opportunities. JFK also had a lot of underserved, and you get more one-one interaction with the docs, even though its not 'high volume'

Personally, I haven't really figured it out yet. I really want the extra training in public health, but I'm also pretty worried about losing out on some relationships that you build during your first 2 years, not to mention that the MD/MPH track is quite different from the MD track, even during the regular school year.

Hopefully I can make my decision soon.

Can anyone else confirm the Feb 15th deadline to decide? For some reason, I feel like it was sometime in March...

I'm pretty sure I was told Feb 15th at the interview.

I am going back and fourth between the 2 programs. I really want to work in the field of public health as well, but I am wondering if it would be better for me to do my MPH sometime later along the line. I am also worried about moving and part of the reason I wanted to go to Miami was being able to work at Jackson.

Has anyone heard anything about financial aid yet?
