Just got the secondary from Miami! Wahoo! Anyone know any details about the screening process? Do they give a lot of them out or is the pool they draw from for interviews fairly small?

OOS, cGPA 3.57, sGPA 3.64, 31R

Website's slow as molasses right now. We all must be logging in at once...

I don't think it's too difficult. This is from their website.

Do all applicants get to complete a secondary application? No. If you are a Florida resident you must have at least a 3.2 undergraduate GPA. If you are a resident of another state you will need to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.6. All applicants must have a minimum composite MCAT score of at least 24.

Got mine as well (I'm OOS). Here is their explanation from their FAQ webpage:

"Do all applicants get to complete a secondary application? No. If you are a Florida resident you must have at least a 3.2 undergraduate GPA. If you are a resident of another state you will need to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.6. All applicants must have a minimum composite MCAT score of at least 24."

I would still like to hear an actual number of secondaries handed out if anyone has that info...

nevermind i answered my own question. good luck peeps!

No guys, UMiami does not screen. However, in the secondary e-mail, they do advise you to have similar stats (GPA ~3.7; MCAT ~31-32). Therefore, your LizzyM Score should be around 68-69.

Just got one as well! Hope it isn't too bad.. Good luck everyone!

Wow so slow... their server must be getting hammered

I cant even go on the website at all right... apparently everyone is trying to apply right now

I can't get a damn username! lol, I'll try again tomorrow I guess.

If anyone has been successful in logging onto the secondary application, can you post all essay prompts and character/word limits. That way I can start working on them even though it is not open?

I'm a little confused about the course requirement page... are we supposed to list the labs that we took? There doesn't seem to be enough "tabs" to list them 😵

haha got this one, took forever and then I realized I already had a login (from OSU), completed and submitted in about an hour.

Does anyone else find it weird that they don't ask us for the course name in the prereqs section? I feel like I'm just listing random grades for the biology and other science part.

Prompt

Briefly describe your non-science, non-medical experiences and activities in the spaces below. Where appropriate, include dates and length of time of your involvement. Do not attach additional pages or send a resume and do not send examples of your work or photocopies of awards or recognition that you have received. Answers limited to 375 characters including spaces. Following are the separate categories:

  • Community Work (organized activities performed for the benefit of the community)
  • Employment (work experiences during the past five years that have been unrelated to science or healthcare)
  • Counseling/Teaching/Leadership (activities as a leader, organizer, counselor, advisor, or teacher)
  • Fine Arts (activities involving dance, drama, music, art, photography, etc.)
  • Sports (organized team sports or recreational activities that you play, watch, or follow)
  • Journalism (activities in which you served as a writer or editor)
  • Travel (describe your most memorable travel experience)
  • Hobbies (what do you do/collect for fun and relaxation)
Narrative One: Briefly describe the one healthcare experience you have had that most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine. Do not send or simply copy information from your personal statement in your AMCAS application. Limit your answer to 1,875 characters including spaces.

Narrative Two: Why do you want to study medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine? Be as specific as possible and limit your response to this space. If you specifically chose the Miami campus or the Boca Raton campus to attend, write your response with regard to that campus. Be as specific as possible and limit your response to 1000 characters including spaces.

Good luck everybody!:luck:

375 characters is nothing for those short prompts. Here's what it looks like:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Mauris fermentum libero vel est tempor tempor. Duis vel est sed ligula ornare fermentum a non magna. Nunc luctus metus a ipsum dapibus egestas. Nullam venenatis volutpat leo eget gravida. Phasellus sem nisi, lacinia eu egestas eu, sollicitudin at turpis. Sed nec erat augue. Quisque odio nibh, interdum in feugiat vel.

I guess they want us to be choosy with what we include!

Yeah, 375 is awfully short. Moreover, it's kind of random. Like, why not 400 characters? Is it really too painful to read the extra 25 characters to make the limit an even number?

Same with the significant health care experience essay... 1875 characters? Not 2000?

At least the "why Miami" question has a happy round 1000 character limit 🙂

This is how I did it 2 years ago and it worked and saved it for now.

So for instance physics was at my school PHY 2053 and PHY 2053L

So I said USF PHY 2053/PHY 2053L and then for the grades I listed the grade of the PHY 2053 and then a comma and then the grade for the lab.

It worked and saved it. So I'd go ahead and do that.

Awesome, thanks for the input! =]

Did you get in?

Not to sound obtuse, I have been puttering around Miller's website but keep coming up short for reasons of why miller? Do they have peer tutoring? Research/ Curriculum/ I mean whats the story? I can't just write fun in the sun!

Journalism: Activities in which you served as a writer or editor...

I have nothing unless you count my research publications... do you think they'll accept research publications... I'm a primary author on two of them.

------

*mutters to self* really?!? I already did this on my PS. In fact my entire PS was about this. Fine!!! I'll talk about it again!!!

Yeah, I was going to put my publications as well but they said "non-science" activities so I didn't.

Lol what if I have none?

Well, I have none too, lol. I think it's okay to leave it blank.

Also, I'm in the same position as you for the essay. I used my PS to talk about my most significant clinical experience so if I write about another experience, it won't be my most "significant". Sigh.

Well it looks like we don't have choice.

The website doesn't seem to have much info on the school, is it just me?

The healthcare experience in the first question can be a shadowing exp, correct?

What exactly does "non-science, non-medical experiences" mean?

So my experience volunteering at a hospital, volunteering with Medshare (sorting and packaging medical supplies), and TAing for general chemistry lab shouldn't be included?

Thanks

Yea, these Florida school applications get more extraordinary by the minute. Each one is very "unique" and "out there." And I love their requirements for classes that not even Harvard and Johns Hopkins require. The only med school I don't have the prereq's to apply to is my alma mater--go figure.

For this one, I called up the admissions office and the lady really had no clue how to answer. I wanted to know if I should include my full time employment at a hospital in the employment section. Just because it's at a hospital, I can't talk about it?

Her having no idea how to answer made me realize, just follow directions. Everything they want to see is on my primary. The secondary makes them feel more important by being really long and special, so humor them. They said non-medical non-science for a reason. Have fun talking about your Pogs collection and your favorite sports team. It's obviously what they want you to do. If you list medial and science experiences when they tell you not to, you are a pre-med robot with a one-track mind who doesn't deserve to take his talents down to South Beach. At least that's how they feel.

Florida is really another world, the way they do things. I mean, the chutzpah they have charging ~$30 for an application when I'm paying $100 at other schools? This state just doesn't make sense.

Just send me a check for that $70 and you'll feel normal.

"Applicant Status. A medical school obtains "Applicant School" status when: (a) It has paid the $25,000 application fee to the LCME to begin the process of applying for preliminary accreditation; and (b) LCME and CACMS Secretariat staff have determined that the school meets the basic eligibility requirements to apply for accreditation (i.e., a current or anticipated charter in the U.S. or Canada and plans to offer the educational program in the U.S. or Canada). NOTE: Applicant Schools are not accredited and may not recruit or advertise for applicants or accept student applications. View a current listing of programs with Applicant Status."

So do they mean you should TRY and be around the 3.6 average? Or will they throw an OSS secondary with a sub-3.6 gpa in the trashcan?

Is UM the only med school in Miami? Someone I know has a med school interview in Miami NEXT WEEK (didn't state if it was UM or not) . Ridiculous considering I still haven't gotten my secondary (although maybe they're waiting on my second MCAT score). Maybe this person was early decision?? Kinda freaking out here... ideas?

There are 2 med schools in Miami.. UM and FIU. Perhaps they had an interview for the latter, since they just started sending out invites.

They have great research opportunities, but many don't realize that they're also very, very big on community service. Take a look at their DOCS program, for example.

If anyone has any questions about applying to the U or what it has to offer, feel free to message me. The school is amazing, and I hope everyone is excited at the prospect of being part of our class of 2015!

For Miami's first secondary essay, they ask the following:

Briefly describe the one healthcare experience you have had that most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine. Do not send or simply copy information from your personal statement in your AMCAS application. Limit your answer to 1,875 characters including spaces.

Does anyone know if by saying "do not copy information from your personal statement" that they mean that we cannot discuss anything from our personal statement, or that they don't want us to copy and paste anything? I ask this because for me, and I feel like a lot of people may be in the same boat, the one experience that most significantly influenced my decision was something that I wrote about in my personal statement...

thanks

hey guys for the 375 character descriptions of ECs, etc. did you guys write a paragraph/sentences and try to explain them? Or did you guys end up just listing the activities? I have a few leadership activities. I want to explain what they are b/c they might sound confusing; however, I explained them well in my primaries... what should I do?

I don't get why this school only wants you to enter the year, institution, and grade for the course page. My school has 6 bio courses for its general bio year; there isn't enough space. Is there somewhere to enter the course name or am i just ******ed...???? 😕

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but can we confirm: There is nowhere on the course prerequisite page that we're supposed to list the name of the course? That seems really weird to me!

I would just list them. I don't think you can have enough characters to list multiple EC activities and explain them since the character limit is less then half of what is required for a given entry in amcas. I'm sure they will read it in the amcas. For the leadership section I just listed them.

In other ones I explained them since it wasn't too many different activities to list in one category.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Thanks guju! Yeah I was thinknig about doing that. ECs I actually have room to talk about, I'll try describing. But like for maybe a few of them I really can't describe them.

For that essay question of "inspirational health care experience" did you just rewrite what you wrote in your PS? I think that's what I may have to do!

hey future doc- watch out for that word it really offends some people who have family members suffering.

Anyone else ready to give up with this damn secondary? I'm almost up to the 2-week mark...
