I had my interview this morning! Now it's just time to wait. If anybody has any questions, I'd be happy to help!

Good luck to everyone else through the entire process!

I'd love to hear anything you would like to tell us about the interview. I'm getting extremely nervous this close to time for mine.

Sorry guys. I wrote a long, detailed response yesterday, and it was deleted when I tried to post since the site was down for maintenance. I'll try to re-write it later tonight.

Hi! Just got back from my interview!! I cant remember all the questions but I'll try.
Tell me about yourself.
What are the 3 biggest issues in medical care?
How would you solve them?
How did you study for the MCAT?
Tell me about your MCAT score.
What do you do to relax?
Tell me two of your strengths.
When you were shadowing what was that "spark" that you remember (like a memorable experience that really touched you, i guess)
Tell me about ______. (activities on my application like my volunteering and shadowing)
You seem to always do well in school, tell me about a time you failed.
Do you have any questions?
Anything you would like us to know before you leave?

They said 10 business days!!! There were 28-29 people there. My interview was pretty short, ~35 min. If you have any other questions feel free to ask or personal message me! 🙂

Everyone that interviewed this week - be sure to fill out an interview feedback form (the link is in the bar at the top of the page) for the benefit of future applicants. You will rate several things about the interview experience and provide some written answers, including specific questions.

I hope everyone's interviews have gone well this week, now for the longest waiting period of your life.

I meant to re-type my experience yesterday for anyone interviewing today (Nov. 19), but I didn't get to it. I'm sure most students interviewing today will be fine. 🙂

The important thing to keep in mind is that OU's interviews are generally very conversational and low-stress. Nearly everyone I talked to on interview day said that their interviews were very conversational with maybe one or two difficult political/ethics/healthcare questions. However, I (Nov. 16) really didn't have any difficult questions and neither did my friend (Nov. 18).

The first question was a form of, "Why do you want to be a doctor?" I also got a form of, "What are some qualities that physicians should have?" and, "What concerns you most about the profession?" They also asked me to explain my low verbal subsection score. Other than that, we just talked about the activities on my application. My friend's interview was very much the same as mine, even though I know we had different interviewers.

With that said, however, some of the difficult questions that were asked of other students that day were:

-"What do you think about Proposition 19?"
-"If the governor were to give you $1 million, what three areas of Oklahoma healthcare would you put the money toward?"
-"In your opinion, what are the three biggest issues in healthcare today?"
-"How would you solve those issues?"
-One applicant I talked to was grilled in the interview for applying as a junior with no shadowing experience and with no idea of a possible future specialty.
-Also, an undergrad from my university interviewed at OU Med a few years ago and was grilled about who certain political leaders were (Vice-President, Secretary of State, Speaker of the House, etc.).

In other words, the interviews can be pretty tough but generally aren't. I was nervous, but they do a pretty good job of getting you to relax.

FYI:

There are about 30 interviews/day. When you show up at 8:15, you are given your interview time, which can be at 9:00, 10:00, or 11:00. The applicants are divided into three groups of about ten each. There is a short infomational session about the rest of the morning with an opportunity to ask questions. At 9:00, the groups split-up and rotate among the three activities (interview, tour, tour), with the order dependant on your interview time. The tours are given by current MSIIs who are very friendly and honest about their experiences, and lunch is provided once your last rotation ends at 12:00.

The interviews are 30 minutes to an hour. There are usually three interviewers per student. Generally, two of them are physicians and one is an MSIV, although some applicants had three physicians. The interviews are semi-blind. For the first part of your interview, the interviewers can only see your AMCAS personal statement and activities. After about 20-30 minutes, they send you out so they can have time to look over your MCAT scores, GPA, and LORs. Then you come back and have another 15-30 minutes. Since many of the interviews are in adjacent rooms in the Bird Library, you have a chance to talk to other applicants to see how their interviews are going while they're looking at your grades.

Currently, each class size is 165. OU has semi-rolling admissions, so the earliest applicants have a chance to hear a yes for acceptance within 10 business days. From what I have heard (but it sounds legit), acceptances are offered until they hit about 120/165. At that point all students are either deferred for decision until early March or are denied. Since there are ~30 interviews/day, all students on the first four interview days (this year, through Nov. 18) have an opportunity to have an immediate decision. Applicants with October/November interviews have a very high acceptance rate. Since there are two dates in October and three in November, the 120 mark is likely hit during the third November date. Interviews in January and February are offered in November and almost certainly will result in deferral. Students who are deferred for decision to early March will then receive correspondance stating either accept, wait-list, or deny. Dr. Baker (Associate Dean of Admissions) told us that there are anywhere from 30-60 that come off the wait-list in any given year.

And by the way: OU acceptances come in the mail in BREs (Big Red Envelopes). 🙂

Whew... that was long. Hope it's helpful!

Sounds like it went well. Hopefully the November people won't have to wait as long to hear back. Good luck

I just had my interview yesterday, so if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer what I can as well. It was a very positive experience overall.

How much does a Nov. 19th interview (the last of the Oct/Nov 150) give you a disadvantage?

I interviewed at the 11am slot (there are 9am, 10am, and 11am slots). Which would mean I'm one of the last 10 of the first 150 interviewed. Do they do automatic acceptances at the end of the day or do they reward them on a student by student basis?

I know I shouldn't worry about it...I mean ~8 days from now they'll be sending out letters, but it's SDN...you people understand. 😀 ... Plus my girlfriend had her interview the day before mine.

Also, I'll be posting the questions I was asked on the interview feedback thing, but for those future interviewees who stumble upon this thread:

Questions: (or at least the ones I could remember - it lasted about 50 minutes)

Tell us about yourself...
(Questions relating to my answer)
Why did you choose medicine over your major? (I'm a humanities major)
If you didn't get into medical school, what would you do?
How do you think your major will make you a better doctor?
What's a recent book you've read for fun?
What medical-related experiences have you had?
What's a pressing issue in health-care today?
Would X fix it?
-----step outside while they look at my disappointing MCAT and GPA
They then asked me about my 2 weakest grades and any time I had a W.
How would you change your undergraduate curriculum if you did it again?
How did you change your studying between your 2 MCATs?
Do you have any questions for us?
Is there anything else we haven't talked about?

Note: EVERYONE I talked to on Nov 19th had pretty laid back interviews. They were really nice people, so don't fret. They want you to get in, nobody likes tearing people's hearts out. Also, they really like asking pointed questions regarding your answers (this makes it a dialogue 🙂). Be prepared to have a conversation.

Good luck to all of you with Nov. interviews, especially the Nov 19th crew. 😀

I really don't think there's any disadvantage in interviewing last day of November; they're still filling their class for the fall so you're still an "early interview."

I don't know about automatic acceptances but I definitely got the feeling in October that the AdCom meets to look at every candidate's file equally, considering every component of it (grades, ECs, LORs, interview scores, etc. etc.)

And yes, I think every poster has a love/hate relationship with SDN. I know I do. Good luck for the next couple weeks. The waiting is just buckets of fun. :luck:

certainly your timeslot on a given day shouldn't affect your chances. I thought that each round was judged together so are they not going to now sit down sometime in the next few days to look at all those who interviewed last week? So I really don't think that one day has an advantage over another within a round.

i think that getting a november interview means that your gpa and mcat are still pretty decent. I wouldn't worry too much about that as long as you explained it.

hopefully its all good news in nine business days. I really think we'll here from them the second week in december. ten business days doesn't take into account that next week wed thurs friday are not business days.

Yeah, I think you're right. I guess I had just read that they ran out of the 120 auto-acceptance slots before the end of November last year, but I guess that doesn't mean they considered the different interview days separately.

Interview invite the 26th of January. I'm unable to attend any interviews after the 13th of January for the rest of the semester (I'll be abroad). Does OU ever accommodate situations like this?

It never hurts to ask, but another option you might have is trading interview dates with someone who is not free for one of the interview dates before 13th. I saw it on last year's post seems like someone couldn't make it to a certain date and they were allowed to find a trading partner.

Congrats on all the interview invites! I guess you'll have something extra to be thankful for tomorrow 😉

Check out the Interview Feedback when you get a chance. I found it pretty helpful

It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask, but be careful because there may not even be any January interview days before the 13th (There aren't any in December). The interviews in a given month are usually all within a week of each other, so my guess is that all January interviews will all fall within Jan. 24-28. If that's the case, you may have a pretty tough situation on your hands. Just talk to Dotty, and she may be able to help.

Good luck! :luck:

Not to sound too obsessed, but I'm hoping someone can answer a few questions for me. I know that acceptance letters come in big red envelopes. This might sound silly, but what exactly do rejection letters come in? And what about deferrals? Also, do they mail all the letters from the November interviews at the same time or do the different days' letters go out separately? And has anyone heard more specifically as to when those might be sent out? Thanks!

Rejections and deferrals come in standard white envelopes.

I think they mail all the stuff at the same time. as for when they will send it out, no idea. But it took about three weeks for the october ones. It's only speculation. usually they follow the ten calendar days that they mentioned at the interview.

Talked with Dotty. Withdrew my application not going to interview. Someone else will have my spot. Good luck everyone!

Wow, now I'm good and nervous. lol. The next 24 hours or so is going to drag by.

Wow my stomach did flips when I saw that on their facebook status. Good luck everyone! At least the waiting will be over soon!

I have no idea when I'll get my letter because our mail has to come to us through another town. So I don't know if that will delay mine or not. Keep me posted if anyone receives theirs!

maybe, even though they mailed it yesterday that if the mail goes through a mailing system like the one at OU than maybe we're looking at a day after today.

When October letters went out there was a 1 day lag between OKC area (Norman, Edmond) with Tulsa. Otherwise I think it took just a day for people in OKC to receive the letter from when they mailed it.

I hope someone else gets to their mailbox and posts if they received their acceptance. I won't see my mail until around six o clock after work.

If they have come in, I'm sure someone would've posted the news. so most likely another sleepless night ahead.

Letters are arriving in OKC area! I have not received mine yet, but my mail still hasn't come. A friend of mine just got his though!

My mail comes around 4:00. I'm in OKC area so hopefully it'll come today. I'll post when I'm done stalking the mail carrier! 🙂

Big red envelopes have arrived in Norman. Thankfully one such envelope to my own mailbox!

Congrats to those who receive them! Best of luck next year to those who don't.

Does anyone know if they sent deferrals and rejections at the same time like anyone who has been deferred receive a letter? My mom checked the mail and nothing came I live in Edmond Like no white envelope from OUHSC or red.. Of course there's the chance that my mom doesn't want to deliver me bad news but I'm definitely worried about if this means a straight out rejection. Anyone from Edmond who received their letter?

Are the envelopes sent my regular mail or something like UPS?

My impression from what we were told on Interview Day was that regardless of status, you will be mailed a decision (white, red, whatever)--each leaving the office at the same time by US Mail.

I'm an IS currently living in a neighboring state and did not receive my notification today either--I anticipate hearing tomorrow. Good luck to you! :luck:

I figured it was regular mail. I guess hopefully a notification of some sort comes tomorrow. But I fear the worst. Good luck to you too.

Mail came later than usual. First off the envelope is not as big as I thought it would be not that I'm complaining.

I just wanted to say good luck to all those who are applying in the future. or have interview dates in the future. Especially for those who are interviewing I have this great resource http://toppremed.com/ The person helps people with interview questions.

Thanks to all those who kept me company on this site.

Additionally I wanted to leave a future message for my sister. She'll probably be applying in oh five years or so and maybe she'll stumble on this post. I don't think I would have gotten accepted without her. I hope she'll realize how instrumental she was for my acceptance I'll be forever indebted even though I'll probably forget about this. And words of advice for you 3505 / 4294, don't procrastinate and good luck in your app endeavors, and I'm not writing your personal statement.

And thanks to my brother 71295 too for everything I'm a little tougher on him so if he sees this in six years or so. I hope you won't be too mad at me for being a big brother.

Sincerely,
bbfan88

Hey I live in Edmond too and haven't received anything. Do you know if they used your preferred or permanent address from AMCAS?

I got my Big Red Envelope! Good luck to everyone, and I look forward to meeting the rest of those who will be in the class of 2015!

For those who might be wondering, my OU score was 12.07.

YeeHaw!!!

I interviewed on the 19th. I'm still waiting for my letter to show up in my mom's post office box. But some people in Norman who interviewed on the 19th have definitely received their letters.

EDIT: My mom just sent me a picture message with a big red envelope!!! I'm so excited. Congrats to everyone else as well.

Wow, congrats on all the acceptances!
:highfive::highfive::highfive:

Look forward to meeting everyone 🙂

By the way, I called Dotty yesterday concerning dropping a minor (in Linguistics) to lighten my load between acceptance and matriculation. She said it would probably be okay, since it didn't involve any prerequisites and whatnot...but since it was on my AMCAS application etc. and you wouldn't want to seem like you were falsely representing yourself, it would be a good idea to e-mail her first so she could forward it to the dean.

Just figured i'd pass that on...e-mail first, play it safe.

Wow, congrats on all the acceptances!

Same here! Congrats everyone! Looking forward to August...

One more thing- isn't there a second visit day of some sort? I vaguely remember this being mentioned on my interview day.

Yeah there's an accepted student day in April (I think it's April?) where we get tour the facilities and meet other students, that sort of thing.

Btw has anyone else had problems setting up their OUHSC email account? I couldn't the secure link to work...

Well that will be a lot more relaxing visit than the first one 🙂 Thanks!

Actually, I heard we have to stand up in front of everyone and do another "entrance interview" before matriculation.

(j/k) 🙂

Yesterday I received my Big Red Envelope!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to meet everybody in the class of 2015!!!

By the way if anybody is interested, I interviewed November 18th and have a 12.05 OU Score
