21 taken off the waitlist as of yesterday... yay she finally responded! But I think it's even more frustrating when you're told that your interview went great and that your scores are fine... so let me in! Bah!
 
Didn't get a letter today, and I live in Tulsa. Were the letters just for scholarships? When will I find out about financial aid offers?

Yes the letters are just for scholarships. The Class of 2015 scholarship letters have NOT been mailed out. (I called) The elder classes (2014, for example from an earlier post) have been mailed out.

I don't know that the Financial Aid office will mail letters or not. Have you checked the gohsc.ouhsc.edu website to see if your award is up? If not, you could just call. They are very friendly.

Hello everyone,

I've been on the waitlist since March 15, but this morning I woke up to an email from the AAMC asking for a background check. I had heard that people who were accepted back in March received this email prior to their big red envelope.

Did anyone else on the waiting list receive the background check email today? Did anyone on the list not get this email? 😕

The wording is what makes me think it may not be a definite acceptance:

"You have received this email because you have been waitlisted or conditionally accepted by one or more of the medical schools participating in the AAMC-facilitated program for performing criminal background checks on conditionally accepted applicants and waiting list applicants."

Any help or answers would be vitally appreciated 🙂

I'm on the waitlist and didn't receive a background check email today. I would imagine that it is good news though! Just out of curiosity what day did you interview?
 
So, my mom just brought me my big red envelope. The email and packet came on the same day!!!! Good luck to everyone still waiting!

If anyone in the class has any advice to bring me up to speed please don't hold back!!

they must be sending background check requests as they mail those BREs.

I wonder if the deadline for multiple acceptances has passed.

3.51 (extreme upward trend - thanks, freshman year); 30S MCAT; application complete mid November (I tend to procrastinate).

Does anyone know if there will be another Second Look Day this summer? Also, where can we find laptop requirements? I looked on IT site but there were no links.

Third question: at second look day did the school say much about immunization records and tb tests or proof of health insurance? Will we just handle that stuff when school starts?

I don't know about the first two questions but you could email James Albertson who is the director of student affairs. He will email you your vaccination form and white coat ceremony form. I know that all of your vaccinations and TB tests need to be done before school starts. He can also probably answer or point you in the correct direction to find the answers to your questions.
 
There was not another second look day last year. Pretty much any laptop that is within a few years old is fine. You only need it to be able to get on the Internet. However a net book would not be a good idea. They will mail you you're forms for white coat and immunizations this summer. You will also be required to do a CPR certification class before school starts. Last year the second years put on a class during the summer at the school. There really is no hurry for this stuff. Sit back and relax. The only thing I would do if you haven't already is get the Hep B vaccine since it takes several months since it is a three part series.
You are required to show proof of insurance during the first few weeks of school.
 
I emailed Dotty today and 36 have been taken off the wait list. There are still 7 holding multiple acceptances.
 
Got a BRE today... so does that make me #36?

Don't worry, there are no labs at Ou besides anatomy lab so no need to worry about being a terrible lab partner 😀

Hey is anyone interested in sharing a three-bedroom apartment at the Lincoln? The rent would be $423 a month excluding utilities. We're both girls, so would prefer a female, nonsmoking roommate. Thanks everyone!

I've been trying to get an apartment at the Lincoln for several weeks now. Really nice complex, plus it's gated. Too bad I'm a guy :laugh:. Married, though.

EDIT: Just got an apartment there. A bit expensive, but apartments throughout OKC are pretty high, and the ones near the campus are not so great.

Not necessarily; your ranking on the wait list is probably impacted just as much by your interview impressions. Good luck, though! 👍

I'm not sure how they calculated it but they said the final waitlist is compiled by using 50%gpa & 50%mcat and that everyone was so close that it's taken to the fourth decimal place. Have you called dotty to see how many people have been taken off the waitlist?

They also said that two other things get taken into consideration- reapplicants w good scores from last year are bumped up on the list and also committee members can petition for and vote for candidates to be bumped up on the list (theoretical ex: you explain during your interview that your gpa was due to a family death; you have an immaculate application otherwise, one of your interviewers fights for you to be bumped up, they vote, you move up or like phange said, people who just completely blow them away at the interview can be moved up- which makes sense to me considering if we all had identical numbers, they have to base their decision on something) what's not so great about that is if you and I were in adjacent spots on the list then they bumped people up in between us it could cause one person to fall way below the other.

I know one girl who gave up her spot last week to go to Osu so there can still be movement. Good luck!!!:luck::xf:

Yeah, for me I feel like I did make a big impression during the interview. I'm definitely one of those nontraditional applicants, but I think who you interview with may make a difference as well? BC mine weren't Adcom members, and I know that during the 2nd phase, its just the Adcom members going off of what your interviewers wrote in order to make the list? That's just a speculation, I'm not sure.

Yes the comments your interviewers leave on their eval forms are what they have to go by. I guess its hard to tell how your stats are weighed, seems like they are just a starting point then shifting and rearrangement happen.

Hey did you end up with a two bedroom apt or a three bedroom? We tried to get a 3 bedroom but they said they were all booked and would call us if anything opens up. 🙁

btw - the lady on the phone said that we get a $50 discount for being OUHSC students! I don't know if you already knew, but that should help out a little with the price..

Sorry for the delay in response - I'm actually in China right now (for realz). I got a one bedroom apartment, actually. I got the discount, which helped a bit.

That's always been my impression of China. A little bit of a 1984 type thing.
 
Hi everyone,

What is the dress code like for classes? I remember from second look day that it was pretty casual but they want us to dress up for orientation. Hopefully they aren't trying to start something new! Also, what laptops are you thinking about getting?

Just kidding :laugh:

As for laptops, OU insists on Windows computers and claims "there is limited support for Apple laptops" however I still stand firm that Macbooks are worth it (if you can afford them, that is - they're quite expensive). Macbooks get incredible battery life for their performance - especially the new Sandybridge i5 models. Besides, if there's something that absolutely won't run on OSX, you can install Windows through an included application called Boot Camp. My Macbook's hard drive is divided into an OSX partition and a Windows partition and both run flawlessly.

A word of caution about Apple, though. They try to upsell you a bunch of stuff you don't need, and they pretty much just lie about programs like iWork (Apple's MS Office knockoff). It does have compatibility with MS Office documents/spreadsheets/whatever, but often not as well as Apple claims. I would highly suggest going with the standard MS Office suite (at student prices obviously) instead of Apple's programs.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Netbooks are basically small, cheap Windows laptops that are relatively underpowered but will most likely do anything you need them to do.

This is true! Although please make sure everything still passes the sniff test during test week.

One thing about Macs is that you can't double-speed lectures on them. I don't know how it works with the partition, though, because I have a PC...

We take tests on our laptops. I don't know how your eyes would hold up on a netbook over several hours, but I can think of one or two people that do it.
