The school has a lot of scholarships for first years, certainly a lot more than for the other three years. Unless it says in the letter that your scholarship is for all four years, it is probably just for the first year. Some needs-based scholarships may be different however.

Does anyone know anything about OOS scholarships from UTH? I got into TT as well and got a scholarship that dropped me down to in-state tuition, so does UTH have a similar opportunity for us?

Even though I can't complain about how cheap TX schools are compared to everywhere else in the country, including my own in-state tuition, paying 11k would be a lot better than 26k or so.

Hey guys, I had a question regarding scholarships. I didn't have any mention of them in the acceptance email, it was relatively brief and seemed to just say "wait for the snail mail to arrive where you will have a bunch of stuff included in it." Is this where I might get some information if I got any scholarships from the school? I know that you can apply for scholarships via the UTH website, but I was wondering if there is any scholarship info included with the letter of acceptance that's coming in the snail mail. Thanks!

what 😕

they do this to leave the same number of seats for everyone, whether they interview on the first day or the last day. they don't want applicants to be at a disadvantage if they got their application in late.

I'm not sure how it's a cheap ploy when it's basically the most fair way you can do things. you realize the prematch offer is a fairly new addition to the match system?

That was actually what my interviewer (2nd year resident) told me. =\

Though you have a great point too.

As much as I'd like you to go to Tech and open up the spot at UTH... 🙂

My understanding is that the law in Texas allows schools to give you in-state tuition if you are awarded a scholarship in excess of some fairly trivial amount ($1000?), so every school gives every OOS students (since there's not many) this amount in scholarships, dropping them down to the in-state tuition rate. Nice, right?

This could be a misunderstanding, and be something that's only true at the schools which specifically mentioned it, but I came away thinking it was common practice.

I'm just confused by what they mean by "ranking." Are they talking about where interviewees put them in the match or some other type of ranking?

We tell people all the time that we want people to rank their match lists based on where they actually want to attend and not any other factor. Our lack of prematching shouldn't affect your decision of where you want to go.

This is what it was at Texas A&M when I was there. Except it was $500 a semester. It recently went up to $1000 a semester.

Finally an interview...long time waiting!

Anybody received their packets in the mail yet?

He was talking about national rankings. One of the biggest factors in ranking schools, next to funding, is apparently the percentage of accepted applicants who end up matriculating. By relying almost entirely on the match, UTH keeps that number high.

eh, I doubt that really makes a huge impact, or is a major factor driving the decision not to prematch. After all, it is a TMDSAS invention (the match), not a UT-H invention. Plus research dollars clearly is the most important factor determining those rankings.

If you fill out the application for scholarships you will be considered for any you qualify for. As far as I can tell, unless you fill out the application you don't get considered (unless you are a stellar applicant and then you might get an offer?) Even if you fill it out after the published deadline (for example, if you get in from the waitlist) you are still considered for any scholarships that are available. Everyone should fill it out! Many of the scholarships for first years are considerable.

Question for current students. As a first year was is your schedule like during a normal week? How long are you guys in class typically?

Interviewed here today and loved it just as much as I thought I would!! People were great and friendly and best lunch and chocolate cake at any interview yet! Seeing open heart surgery and the LifeFlight definitely helped as well. The TMC has so many opportunities, and I just hope I get the chance to experience them. Sad I missed the prematch period and have to wait til Feb 1st even though I'm OOS and find out with the people in the match. Oh well! Here's to patience and hoping for the best! :luck: everyone!

You didn't miss the prematch period 🙂 It is until December 31st! You may still find out before the end of the prematch! Yay!

I interviewed here on Nov. 12, and they told us that they only give out one set of prematches, on the 15, so we (and any interviewees after us) would not be receiving prematches and would have to wait for the match. A poster above did say that he received his on Dec. 29 last year, so don't hold me to this, but that is what the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs told us.

has anyone received their packet in the mail yet?... because i haven't

That is crappy... Hopefully they will adhere to what they have done in the past and give out more prematches after this date.

Yeah, hopefully so. It would definitely be a nice surprise since I'm planning on having to wait until February 1 anyway.

It took like 2 months for me to get mine. I wouldn't expect it right away.

Don't freak out about it 🙂

Oh, okay thats good. Did you live in the medical student housing your first year? And if so, when do you apply for that housing option?

I applied for it but I made the mistake of telling them I wanted to move in in August. They finally offered me a place for a Sept 11 move-in. I highly recommend telling them you want to move in in June or earlier. Paying an extra month or two of rent will pay off in the long run.

There's a particular day that the housing waitlist starts. I think it's in January or February.

Nope. I'm gonna call tomorrow to find out when they're sending them out.

Addo, RiceStudent2011 posted yesterday that he/she was pre-matched, so Ursa asked when the email was sent to make sure it wasn't after the 15th. Ricestudent2011 was just replying to that.

How do you fill it out? Is is something we were supposed to fill out pre-acceptance?

I <<open>> heart <<surgery>> UT Houston!

That is all

Okay, so I called just now and was told that the packet was sent out last Friday. It should be arriving soon!

-goes back to lurking-

Just found out I'm interviewing here Dec 17th! How random? I'm an OOS so I'm super excited. I know the pre-match offers have been sent out, but since OOS doesn't participate in the match does anyone know the possibility of finding out sooner than February?

Can't wait to check out the TMC!

I interviewed here last Friday OOS. I loved it BTW! TMC is amazing along with the rest of their interview day! They informed us that since their first prematch offers already went out, the next offers would not go out until the Feb 1st match and the second OOS round of acceptances will go out at the same time as well, so unfortunately at UT-Houston, being OOS doesn't exempt you from the match dates 🙁 but hopefully, it will be worth the wait!

So...didn't get pre-matched and hoping for match day.

I was wondering how much it would help to send updates before Feb 1st. (I interviewed in September btw)

I have a pending first-authored paper that I'm currently working on and my PI says he is hoping to submit it before Christmas and before New year at the latest. Assuming it doesn't get published before february, would sending UTH update letter about paper submission increase my chances?:xf:

I don't know if it'll increase your chances significantly but it wouldn't hurt to send an update.

I wasn't prematched to UT H and I wasn't matched at UT H. I was accepted from the waitlist and I sent nothing (no updates nor any correspondence) between my interview date (early August) and the date I got in off the waitlist (early June). So I don't what goes into this process of deciding who to match but it surely wouldn't hurt to give them something extra to consider.

😡

Still have't gotten it. Starting to worry.

Same for me (year before Cher25). I would send an update only if you feel that it addresses a deficiency in your app and you haven't already interviewed or haven't received an interview offer. If you have an interview your app is probably good enough without the update. If it makes you feel more confident to send an update by all means do so, it won't hurt.
Good luck to you.

I've been at my permanent address since Wednesday. I'm hoping its just a mail glitch. I'm gonna call tomorrow.

@Sxp9353
Do you know if all the invites for January 7 are sent out?

And does anyone know if you don't get an interview, you can't participate in the match + rank your schools? You have to have an interview right?
