Do anyone jump right from preliminary screening to interview invite? Or is everyone small pooled? (sorry, I know I'm repeating myself)

Earlier in the thread, some people got invites after their screen. It seems like a decent amount end up pooled first though. For what its worth, scanning through this thread and mdapps, some people got invites the same day as being small pooled, a few weeks after, a month after, and there's some who have been small pooled since july/august with no word since then. I've been in the small pool for a month now and haven't heard anything. Its limbo. You may hear soon or there's a greater likelihood you won't hear anything for quite some time.

Great thanks! This is what I figured.
:luck: to everyone stuck in the pool

I'm in the pool too after hearing that they're not taking any MD/PhD applicants this year. Strange e-mail I got from them on Tuesday. But I am small-pooled for MD only so there's still hope there! 🙂

I am not sure if I was in the small pool before getting my interview because I didn't even have time to check the online applicant center, but I got my invite less than two weeks after submitting my secondary. Hope that helps :/

How long once you've been small pooled would be good to call and express a high interest? or is it better to send a letter? anyone have any idea about this?

anyone have any idea about how much should you contact them to show interest after being waitlisted so you are not bothering them or being overzealous??

Follow your instincts, and just be yourself. Don't do things you think you should do, but do things you yourself deem necessary. Good luck.

Hey congrats to all of those with interviews/acceptances! I'm OOS and wondering how heavily IS is favored? I'll have 3.4-3.5 GPA, 34 MCAT, plenty of shadowing (2 specialists + rotations with an intern at my school's hospital), volunteering teaching science to under-served children, volunteering coaching soccer to children, and 1.5 years neuroscience research. I'll have a BS in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University. I hear wonderful things about UVM, but my GPA makes me think OOS anywhere is unlikely...🙁. I'm applying next cycle.

Scores are definitely not everything. Don't ever let anyone here or anywhere else discourage you or deter you in any way because of a meaningless numerical supposed representation of your educational understanding. Applications will give you the opportunity to present yourself as a whole person, not two numbers. Everyone is unique, and has something valuable to bring the table. You just have to show what that is, and let them know they need it and you are prepared to bring it. They will see that your potential is not reflected by scores you got 3 years ago, but far exceeds them. Because the ability to be fruitful at an institution does not just come from high scores, even if it does translate to immense intelligence. Schools are looking for more - for leaders, for people with diverse backgrounds that will bring different aspects and methods of learning to light, people who are going to positively influence their peers and help them become better physicians while they become great ones themselves. It's so cliche, but being yourself is so important. You just have to make sure you believe that yourself is someone who can have an impact and succeed while helping others around him/her succeed as well. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and want to help your fellow classmates, and it will show. You all have special and unique attributes, and so much to offer, so go and make it known to those medical schools and kick some butt! Never give up, never be discouraged. Good luck, everybody. 🙂

Well, since it is the first snowfall of the season where I am, I was thinking how picturesque UVM must be at this time of year and checked my status this morning: rejected from the small pool.

Good luck to everyone else!

Submitted late-July, Complete in August, Small Pool 11/12
uGPA<3.5, MCAT >34, OOS

Wow. Stat twins. I just got small pooled recently but seeing this worries me.

Sorry to hear your news. Good luck with the rest of your apps.

Ha, yeah, thanks. I really liked the sound of UVM and how they sold themselves online, so sent an update/interest letter shortly before getting small pooled. Oh well. I did notice in some other threads we applied to similar schools with similar numbers, so good luck!

I recently got an interview invite. I've been small pooled for almost 2 months. I'm so excited to head to VT, even though it will be bitterly cold by the time I get there!

For those who have received interview invites...What are your stats? if you don't mind sharing...

also, I've asked this question a few times but no one seems to answer...but when is it a good time contact UVM about my interest in the school? And is it better to call or send a letter? I was small pooled last Monday.

do both, and do it soon

I interviewed in mid-October and my status was changed to "you''ll receive a decision in the mail in the coming weeks" in early November. Should I be concerned that I haven't heard anything yet?

What exactly is everyone saying when they call? I've written to them but I haven't called because I don't know what to say that doesn't sound awkward or desperate or annoying.

Yeah do it right away. I was going to "time" it, and call yesterday, figuring I would wait until after Thanksgiving to call back since I was small pooled shortly before Thanksgiving, and then I was rejected that day, ha. So, if you're interested just let them know - express that and ask what is the next step in this process that you can do.

sorry to hear about the rejections 🙁

if prior years are any guide, those of you who interviewed OOS who are still waiting should be hearing something pre-Xmas. Perhaps next week? I haven't got any inside info, but that's how things went last year!

I interviewed at UVM at the end of September.

OOS
cGPA-3.97
sGPA-3.95
MCAT- 31

I do not think they care so much about your stats. They care about your attitude and that you succeed in what you do. UVM is one of my top choices and I am crossing my fingers that I get pulled off of the waitlist soon!

IIRC that's how it went last year. I'm a current first year and the big thing to remember with UVM is that you are almost certainly going to end up on the waitlist before you get in. I interviewed last year in early September but didn't get in until early May just before the 15th. If you really want to come here let admissions know it! I think I sent a LOI once a month and then April got around I started calling. It's an awesome school here (and I am saying that during the middle of anatomy) and the match list is superb. Just don't give up when it gets to April and you haven't heard anything. I was on three waitlists on May 1st and got in to two so if you have gotten this far there is always hope.

Today I received this update in the OAC... We are pleased to inform you that your name has been placed on the Out-of-Area waitlist of qualified/alternate candidates.

Is this good?

I have been accepted to other programs, but Vermont is my #1 choice. Should I start writing letters immediately?

getting on the waitlist is "good" because it isn't a rejection (it's kind of like the next step in the process). unfortunately, it isn't "great" because it's not acceptance. i would definitely send them an update later or letter of interest and how soon you do that is up to you. the committee only meets once a month, but your letter gets added as soon as you send it (whether or not the committee sees your interest immediately would depend on when they end up meeting).

To anyone who was pooled earlier, I just checked through all the schools I've yet to hear back from (sending an update letter) and found my pool got switched to a rejection 🙁

I didn't get an email or anything notifying myself of a change in status, so just be aware that status changes don't necessarily come with notifications.

Just checked the OAC, on the waitlist as well. Did anyone from the last batch to get reviewed get off the waitlist this time around? And did any OOSers get accepted without going on the waitlist this batch?

For those who were WL today...when did you interview? I thought I was going to be in "this batch" but no status change at all today...

no update on my end either... i know someone who interviewed on hte same date I did and who already got the waitlist last batch...so this wait is painful.

We interviewed the same day. How come no status update for me 🙁

I read back a few pages and saw a lot of people asking a) if anyone's gotten in off the waitlist and b) when to send letters, make phone calls, etc.

Here's my story:

I interviewed in early September and absolutely loved the school. I was placed on the Out of State waitlist on October 19. On October 21 (yes, only two days later), I sent them a one page letter of reaffirmed interest as an attachment to an email. They didn't send a confirmation, so on November 5 I called them to show continued interest, and also to make sure they received my letter. On November 8 I was accepted via email!

So if you love UVM and are truly enthusiastic about going there, send them letters, make phone calls, and just make sure they know it. When I called them they told me they made a note in my file that I reaffirmed UVM as my top choice, and they also told me when it would be good to call back. So that is a great question to ask when you call--I phrased it as "I don't want to annoy you guys, but I also want to make sure you know I really want to go here!" That got a chuckle out of the admissions lady, and she was more than willing to tell me when I should call back (the date was earlier in December, probably before a committee meeting).

I hope this is helpful information for anyone stuck on the waitlist! When I interviewed there, the few students I talked to all said they were waitlisted before receiving an acceptance. So here, possibly more than any other school, getting a waitlist is better news than you might think.

Good luck to everyone!

Accepted!!! Just got the email. Inteviewed 9/30. Then got put on the OOS waiting list in the first batch. I'm very excited! This school is definitely one of my top choices!

Thanks Engov. That makes me feel better. I wrote my letter the day after being waitlisted (yesterday) and have been trying to call. I'm sure they must be busy, but I will continue to call until I am successful. I love Vermont, the school, the program, and I am going to do everything within my power to go from the waitlist to the acceptances.

In a related incident, my neurotic pre-med self spent two hours last night reading over the entire thread from last year to see WL movement trends instead of sleeping so I am rested today for my finals. Lol.

Congrats! That's really exciting! Aldjsodiwodiwodjwo hope some of us join you soon.

ACCEPTEDDD!!😀 two days after sending update letter. OOS. Interviewed on 10/14. Waitlisted in early Nov.

very excited for all of you who have been accepted but thoroughly bummed for myself now.

I interviewed mid-september, OOS waitlisted first batch and sent in a LOI three days later and still haven't heard anything (other than an email confirming that they got the LOI and added it to my file).

Maybe I'll try calling next week...

Haven't seen a lot of activity on here from in-staters, but I am happy to share that today I received the offer of ACCEPTANCE! I worked hard to put myself in this position, and it is a tremendous relief to receive the official word.

Stats are balanced and slightly higher than UVM's published averages, ECs are diverse with heavy/sustained leadership involvements, and lots of 'life experience'. Interviewed late October, IS wait-list early November.

I realize that the process is unique for in-staters, but I hope this information is helpful for some of you. My heart goes out to everyone waiting indefinitely for updates. I am fortunate that my period of waiting was relatively brief, though it still got the better of me at times and I would never wish it upon anyone.

Just got an interview invite this morning! Interview is scheduled for 2/10/11. I'm OOS.

Complete in late August, small pooled sometime in early October.

Any advice about what to do/see in the area while I'm there? I've never been up to Vermont, but I am preparing for some mighty cold weather!

thot I'd share. I just got an interview invite this morning.. my first actually.. pretty thrilled.. at least now I know its not one of my letters or something holding me up.

sharing my stats for reference..OOS(from CA) cGPA 3.49, sGPA 3.47, MCAT 32

so theres still hope!

Any OOS interview the week of September 14th and receive an acceptance off the waitlist??

Any OOS interview the week of September 14th and receive an acceptance off the waitlist??

I interviewed September 14, waitlisted first batch and haven't heard since then.

I really really liked UVM when I visited so now it's just trying to be patient.

Just hang in there guys. I interviewed in mid nov. and was waitlisted the first few days in december, a few days later I received an acceptance via email. I am OOS by the way so to those waitlisted, you are not going to have to wait until April or May before you start getting some love, hopefully you will get some good news sooner.

Yippe got "small" pooled today. Anybody know how "small" this pool actually is and the timeline and likelihood of an interview? From the thread it seems very random. Any idea at this point in the cycle?

Thanks

I really really hope so! Man do I love UVM.

Did you send any letters or call or anything? Or did you just get in off the WL?

What exctly do you put in a LoI besides the obvious "i really realllllly wanna go here"?

I dunno man🙁
I also think I made a tactical error sending in an update letter before the decisions came out. It was detailed and told pretty much everything I have been up to PLUS that I love them and now I have nothing left to say🙁
