I've been placed in that pool of applicants waiting for an interview for about 3 months. I've already written a letter of interest and had a Wake Med alumnus write a letter of rec. Is the rest just a waiting game or can I be any more pro-active???

Same place as you! Written 2 letters of intent, 1 update to my application and submitted 1 additional letter from a physician at the wake forest medical center ... and probably called 20 times and visited the office twice (being that I work at Wake Forest) ! I honestly don't think I can do anymore ... in the interview pool since September! Honestly I've given up hope. Sad ... I love this place.

What did you do when you visited the admissions office? Were they receptive at all?

I dropped off my letters of intent and my updates. They weren't as nice as they are on the phone ... but they were alright. I figured it was faster then sending it through the mail.

I think we're all in an interview pool. I think if you got a secondary you're reviewed and placed in some kind of interview pool.

Yeah I called and they just told me that. I think normtheniner is right with his comment.

I'm confused...so if we have the message saying your application is complete, interviews are conducted between blah blah and if you are selected for an interview blah blah..we need to call to schedule an interview?

Somehow I don't think that is right...

No once you're complete you're reviewed and placed in a pool of potential interviewees. I think that's what they meant when they say interview pool. Just like fishing in a pond the fish all have the potential to be caught but realistically you'll only catch a select few (sorry for the lousy analogy)

has anyone received a decision from Wake since 12-20? I wonder when the next round of decisions will be released. To everyone who have interviewed w/o a decision and those who are on the wait list or in an interview pool, heres to hoping great news comes soon!

how did you receive the invite? I would've expected an email, but I had a missed call today from someone who didn't leave a message. I called the number back right afterwards and it was just an automated message from Wake Forest Medical Center basically saying I wouldn't be able to reach anybody from that number. If they meant to invite me I hope they do eventually manage to reach me because I really want an interview!

I sent in my secondary 9/10 but wasn't officially marked complete until 9/15. I received an email from them. No phone calls that I know of so I'm not sure what that's about.

Yeah the call was probably just someone dialing the wrong number and getting my hopes up haha... BUT I did still get the invite email today! Turned in my secondary exactly four months ago, so it has been a long wait.

Just got accepted!!!!!! IS re-applicant, interviewed on January 3rd and found out through my status change 🙂

I'd like to clarify something, just to make sure I'm not shooting myself in the foot.

There are a handful of posts in this thread where people are claiming 10 phone calls, 15 letters of interest, 20 emails, etc, all before their interviews.

To my knowledge, most med schools dislike any (let alone frequent) contact by pre-interview applicants. Am I correct? Or should I be playing the game as well?

Thanks in advance!

I try not to call but once every few weeks just to see if there is any news. I called a few months ago and she told me to write a letter of interest (which I did). I also updated them at the end of December with grades/research/clinical experience.

I think calling to the point that they know you by name when you call may be a little much... thats just by opinion though.

if they told us at our interview that we would be looked at by the committee last Wednesday and to check the portal this week for a decision, did people normally get responses in the beginning of the week, or should we not expect anything until Thursday for Friday?

start hitting the refresh button come Wednesday morning.....you'll have a decision by the afternoon!

got mine on tuesday so you can start looking tomorrow

Good luck

If you read back a few pages, it can vary anywhere from 2 days to 7 days after they meet. In December they met on 12/15 and status updates came out 12/20 (a Monday). So it's quite possible we could hear something later today.

Looks like they also met on 12/1, and status updates went out 12/6 (another Monday). So the last two times they met the status changes went out the following Monday. Could very well be today guys.

I interviewed on January 5th and was just wondering if I should expect a status update today? I was told the committee would review my file on January 19th.

How conservative and how religious is Wake Forest?

Not particularly. I mean, its the South so you'll run into your fair share of southern baptists. However, I've seen a variety of beliefs openly expressed and accepted among the students and staff and in the general town of winston salem. There was an opening prayer at white coat and our cadaver memorial ceremony however nothing that I thought of as over the top or offensive to anyone who is not christian.

The fact that you have to clarify this should be a bit of a warning to anyone who is not Christian. While there are students with non-Christian and non-JudeoChristian beliefs, there are many more Christians, and many fundamentalist Christians in the school of medicine, and in Winston in general.

As a non-Christian growing up in Winston, I can tell you that you will often be confronted with Christianity and prayer in seemingly inappropriate places (government meetings, just as an example). That being said, I have a sibling at Wake in the SOM and find her class (the crowd she spends time with, anyway) to be open and kind.

I can assure you though, that if you find it offensive to be evangelized to or openly judged for your non-Christian beliefs, you will find life in Winston, if not on campus at Wake, to be offensive on a regular basis.

Just to chime in, I spent much of my youth in Winston-Salem as a non-Christian in a Catholic household, visiting frequently to this day. kamikaze may have different experiences from me, but I'm not sure I've ever been evangelized to. It has a rich arts and culture scene, and some charming Moravian traditions around Christmas. Lately, there's been a considerable immigrant influx there, from Latin America to the Northeast. It's a fine and diverse community.

I am from Winston-Salem and I consider myself to be rather aware of religious tendencies as they relate to public places, venues, etc. That is, I don't support overt religious displays in arenas that should be theologically neutral.

Reflecting on my youth in W-S I cannot think of anything remotely as in-your-face, let alone offensive, regarding religion as you describe. Perhaps we had different experiences but I do not agree with your hyper-religious characterization of W-S. We're in the United States and North Carolina is a Southern state so there is obviously going to be a strong Christian base in the city; however, it's not a town full of Bible thumpers.

To anyone who is concerned about this aspect of life in Winston-Salem, the city is home to a pretty diverse (relatively speaking) population and many non-Christians study at or are employed by Wake.

Many people bemoan Winston's lack of social outlets, especially those for students, but not once have I heard the city is too religious.

I don't know if it's just the part of town I was staying in when I interviewed, but it reminded me more of Amherst, MA or some other liberal enclave. I ate at the "Magic Mushroom" cafe or something like that. I am the farthest thing from Christian, but I'm also pretty hard to offend, and I find the Southern hospitality just lovely! I don't think it would be at all aggravating to spend 4 years in W-S.

I interviewed on January 5th, so I guess I should be seeing a status update soon. I was expecting one last week, but I suppose my application wasn't reviewed at the January 19th meeting. If meetings are every two weeks, I guess a decision will be made this Wednesday. *fingers crossed*

With the exception of one IS person, nobody on SDN has heard any decisions from WF since December 20th. I was also told in my interview they were meeting on January 19th and I would hear back the following week. It makes me wonder if there was a problem and they were unable to meet. If so, then you have to wonder if they met on the 26th? Anyone have some insider knowledge they can share???

I see. When you check your status online, does it still say something along the lines of "an interview has been scheduled and information emailed to you?"

Yes, and I have been seeing that message at least 20 times a day for the last week and a half hoping it would change. From others that have posted, that message will change to note you are accepted/rejected/waitlisted and then they eventually send you out an e-mail message. Seems like that e-mail is about a day behind the status change.

Oh I know exactly what you mean! Out of my four interviews, Wake and Duke are the only ones from which I haven't heard. With no acceptances yet, I'm hoping for a nice surprise in the next few days. :luck:

How are you guys checking your statuses? I tried logging in using the link and numbers in my secondary email, but all that showed me was my secondary application, which doesn't seem to include a status.

Has anyone had any interview offers lately?

Just got the email a few minutes ago from Wake.

Interviewed: Oct 12
Waitlisted: Nov 9

ACCEPTED: Feb 3.

I had sent in a letter of interest a week after I was waitlisted. I visited the medical school after my interview and spoke with some folks in the admissions office. I recently sent them my grades from last semester, along with a note of my desire to study at Wake. I guess it paid off.

For those who haven't heard back or have been waitlisted, I feel your pain. But...be persistent and take courage. Don't give up. The waitlist is definitely moving. Goodluck and keep praying to God.

Found out by status change this afternoon, got the e-mail at 4pm. First acceptance! Now officially class of 2015!

Interviewed: January 14th
Accepted: February 3rd

Good luck to everyone. Keep working hard, this is in your own hands.
