Rejected. Would have been nice to come down and interview somewhere warmer!

Hey everyone,

I'm a graduating fourth year student at WFU School of Medicine and I just wanted to encourage you all to come to Wake if you're on the fence between your options. Wake is really a tremendous school. I'm from the west coast originally and I had my preconceived notions about the south, but these have been allayed by the incredible years I've experienced in Winston Salem and I have very few complaints about my training.

I'm about two weeks away from finding out where I will spend residency (i.e. Match Day), but some of my classmates have already matched and people have done really well so far. You will not be at all limited in your residency options - many of my classmates are doing primary care like FM and pediatrics, while many others are doing more competitive specialties. This tends to reflect the preferences of the student body. We went five for five for Opthalmology this year and have three people applying for Plastics; I say this only to let you know that whatever you decide to choose, you should be in good shape, whether it's Psychiatry or Dermatology. (But like anywhere, you'll have to work your butt off to the do the most competitive stuff.)

The administration at this school really cares about providing us with the best education possible. If you've been accepted, you already know we get early clinical experience, have a mixed PBL/didactics curriculum, and have some primary care time in rural NC worked into our training, among other things. Wake Forest is not a school that teaches to the boards; it's a school that really excels in its clinical training. There are still many people at this school who obliterate the boards, but as a whole the most impressive piece in the student experience is the clinical training. Many of us recognized this when we went on away rotations at other schools during our fourth year and really felt like we knew what we were doing compared to a lot of people.

The school enables quality of life in a way that most schools do not. We have many school-sponsored socials throughout the year, as well as tailgates for sporting events. Some people are married and keep to themselves, while others are single and very much involved with the social fabric of their class. Intramural sports were a big part of my experience, but everyone seems to find their niche. Winston Salem is incredibly affordable and such an easy place to live. No traffic, clean, and enough to do to keep a busy med student entertained.

Ultimately, you will get great training and will not at all be disappointed if you come to Wake. That seems to be the general concensus among my peers - that we were really fortunate to get to train here.

So whatever you all decide, best of luck. I've got nothing to gain by this except I want my alma mater to draw the best talent.

Good luck.

So I called admissions this morning and was told there isn't going to be a revisit weekend this year....a little confused because I was under the impression that they usually have one??

Hi guys, for those of you who are planning on attending Wake, how are you guys going about finding housing? I noticed that there's a university page for apartment/house listings but is that how most people find housing?

Do most people drive to school? I'm going to admit I'm not a fan of walking in the Southern summers.

I received an interview invite today for next week, and I couldn't be more excited. Wake is an incredible school! My app was compete way back in August.

Looking forward to reading this thread to get the inside scoop.

Can anyone on this thread tell me what opportunities there are for learning about population-based medicine at Wake?

You're going to love Wake. The interview day is super informative and the people there are very accommodating. I got a really good impression from the school and the faculty really seems to believe in how they do things.

I actually enjoyed my interviews too, they were conversational and actually quite fun. Not nerve-wrecking at all but I did get asked about my research a ton.

I was told to look for a status change March 30th, but if I'm not mistaken I think there was a meeting last night.

Just got an email with attachment saying I was placed on alternate list. Probably not the worst thing in the world since they have to offer a considerable number of acceptances to fill their class. I would love to go here, so I'm hoping for the best

Has anyone called to check his/her waitlist position? Just wondering if the office is releasing that info yet.

Just pulled from the waitlist. Got on it in late october. Would have loved to go to wake but I got into a state school so its a 30,000 dollar difference per year. Good luck to all. Feel free to message me with any questions

Facebook group for the class of 2015! I think it would be a great tool to see whats happening as far as housing/waitlist movement is concerned.

Yes! Please join the group if you've been accepted or WL 🙂 There are a bunch of us there (Class of 2014 and even some 2013 who are taking step 1 this week :scared:). Anyways, if you guys have any questions feel free to stop by there 🙂

does Wake actually reject post-interview? Or are all of us that are not accepted just waitlisted?

i missed finicial deadline, do i still have a chane to receive finicial aid?

When anyone else logs on to check their status does a pop-up window come up that says "Acad career MD"?

Yes, I get the same message. (My) financial aid offer was posted today so that could be the reason.

10 minute walk door to door to the school (2 minute drive), right across from the YMCA, 2bd/2ba, BRAND new apartment, living in a complex with 4-6 other med students.

PM me if you're interested.

Congrats on getting in.

- Current 4th year

Congrats all to those accepted (and attending) Welcome!

I didn't stay at Wake for my residency, but the curriculum has served me well.

I think Wake was an excellent choice because it nurtured me as doctor - both in educating me in pathophysiology and being a humane care-giver. If you you get the same talk I got, you'll learn that 'doctor' originated from Latin, "to teach." Even in the ED, people are incredibly grateful to be educated about their medical problems and medications. Unless, they just want Dilaudid - in which case, being a humane doc doesn't hurt you either, and the fewer nicks on your soul the better 😉

It's been amazing over the past year to use the skills I've learned there.

Good luck and congratulations!

Wake's scholarship just wasn't enough....officially withdrawing also....so another spot opening up!

I spoke with Irene Tise in the admissions office on Wednesday and learned that I was "about halfway down" the waitlist.

So what do you guys (and gals) think? Am I condemned to a long, agonizingly slow death? 🙂

Did you just call the admissions office to ask where you were on the waitlist?

Just call the admissions office and ask for Irene. She's a really sweet, older lady who typically goes out of her way to help. 🙂

Just got in off the waitlist!!! Received notification via email.

Best of luck to all those still waiting!

I just called and asked for Irene to find out my position on the wait list. The lady told me the list is not ranked right now and they are not giving out that information. I'm confused! Did anyone else find out their position?

Try sending an email. I emailed them, and Irene emailed me back with my position on the list. She told me my position in a top % kind of manner, not a number.

To all who were accepted off the waitlist, did your status also change to indicate your acceptance?

Please pm me if you would like some help finding housing. I live in Winston and can be of great help to you if necessary. I personally have 3 different properties within 1 mile or less of the school/hospital. Good luck and congrats on your wake acceptance.

Could you give me the link? I hadn't checked back in with the status page after my secondaries, not sure what the page is.

I was accepted off of the waitlist so I missed the financial aid deadline. Does that mean that there is no chance for financial aid this year and I will have to wait until next year to apply?

Wow, congrats! May I ask when you heard back?

BTW: I'm not sure about the financial aid... it seemed like they were pretty strict on the March something dead line when I interviewed.

hey everyone... can anyone weigh in on what life is like in winston-salem? i am trying to decide between wake (fairly comparable in price to my state school, UConn), my state school (UConn) and georgetown (pricey!)... i won't get a chance to revisit wake before i need to make my final decision, so i'm just trying to get a feel for how you all decided to make wake your choice and also how current med students feel about wake.. thanks so much in advance!

Has anyone heard anything recently? I talked with Irene but she wouldnt give me any indication as to where I stand, just to call back in June if I was still on the list, she also asked if I was on the waitlist anywhere else. Did any of you who have been accepted from the alternate list hear about your position prior to getting in? I want to get in so I can move back east.

For those accepted off the waitlist, do you have your financial aid information yet/how long did it take to show up? Thanks!

accepted off the wait list this morning! so thrilled, will definitely be going here 🙂

I called Irene today about a general waitlist position. She said to try back at the end of the month. I wonder if sending an email would have been more effective....

Congrats on getting off the waitlist!

Wake is also my top waitlist choice (no acceptances) and the only thing at this point that I can think to have hope for is that the class of 2015 facebook page only has 71 members (2014 has the full 121). While I know that doesn't mean anything, its better than nothing. I also haven't been able to coax a waitlist position out of irene after a few tries. Good luck to everyone else out there still on waitlists, especially those without acceptances yet!
