So who else is hoping for a Nov 1 call?

Most definitely hoping for a call that day. I interviewed on 10/6, and Dr. Mauer said that they try hard to get prompt responses out, so if we hit 6-8 weeks, something probably got misplaced and we should give a call. Since the next decision date after Nov. 1-2 will be 5 weeks for me, thereby pushing at that 6-8 week "limit," I'm hoping this will be my time...

Anyone else hoping on this one?

II on 10/24, complete 9-29 or around then. Really pumped about this one, lots of friends that attend here.

I interviewed the following week, and they told us that it would be likely that we would hear on Nov. 1 🙂

Best of luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow! Once again, I will be a student interviewer. I love learning about applicants and sharing how much I love chm.

Also, we just finished our anatomy upper limb exam! This means we are over halfway done with our first semester. It's hard to believe.

Although my interviewer, she was pretty awesome 🙂

Good luck to those interviewing tomorrow!!!

Good luck with your interview. Let us know how it goes. With everything I'm hearing on this thread, CHM is a great place. It sounds like an amazingly supportive environment.

I have never been to MI, but so far I have learned that MI people are hella nice. 😀

No you don't. I ask really difficult questions and strive to make my interviewee sweat as much as possible.

Just kidding.

Also, as a side note, I love listening to our tour guides as they walk around secchia. I constantly find myself thinking, "wow, I didn't know that... cool!"

I hope everyone who interviewed today had a great time.

Can someone clarify the differences (pros/cons) between the el and gr campuses?

I have an interview at EL on November 3rd

HOLY, I JUST GOT AN INTERVIEW!! 😍 CHM is my top choice. I don't think words can express how excited I am.

There aren't so much as pros/cons as there are differences. Grand Rapids is more of a city, and the building is only CHM (no other academic presence) and is right next to a big medical complex for the city. East Lansing is more of a college town, being on the main campus with all of the adjacent undergraduate experiences and resources. There really is no "better" across the board, and this will be a pretty personal decision. The lectures are said to be split pretty evenly between the sites, but it seems that slightly more of them originate from EL (but that probably won't matter much, because many students just watch the lectures online anyway). There will be research and clinical opportunities at either site. The benefit of having a more established institution in EL means that many of the research opportunities will be on campus, while in GR its more based through the partners in GR, like the Van Andel institute or clinical research via all the hospitals. So opportunities are probably the same, with GR having flashy new everything (even the other hospitals) and EL being more established.

The biggest differences really come down to the cities themselves. I can't really comment on EL, but for GR it's a substantial downtown city (where the Secchia center is) with a quick drop off to small neighborhoods surrounding it. I believe EL is more dispersed. This is basically a personal decision.

The biggest differences in campuses come from the clinical campuses, and this is where a type of clinical education will be different. The preclinical education/experience is standardized between GR & EL. Hope this helps & good luck!

Congrats =). I remember how excited I was when I was invited to interview.

On another note, can anyone who interviewed yesterday comment on their impressions of CHM? I'm extremely curious about applicants perceptions. I'm not looking for a sugar-coated answer unless you really are absolutely in love with everything you experienced here.

In return, I will answer any and all questions you have about CHM, with as much transparency as possible. Be aware that I really do love my school so I honestly can't do very much hating.

I logged in today to check my status and it said "Fatal Error" every time I try to log in..foreboding message, or just a simple error?

Remove the last little bit of the URL... the php stuff.

just use this... http://chmapp.hc.msu.edu/aplocal/applicants/

once it gives you fatal error... then remove the php stuff and hit enter again. should give you 3 links to look at.

^ you're the man CodeBlu.

Application is still under review from July 14th...

Way to go getting an interview!! I was ecstatic when I got mine as well; CHM is my first choice too. I'm in the group that *should* hear back this coming Nov. 1-2...

How do you think your interview went?f Feeling good about it? Inho, it would probably be pretty hard to feel bad about a CHM interview unless something goes terribly wrong, as they seem to all be pretty laid back - more conversations between colleagues than formal interviews...

I would disagree with this a little bit-- I think it really depends on your interviewer. Mine asked me a fair amount of ethical questions, and seemed to be probing my moral compass. But it was still pretty stress-free because I was prepared for it.

Let me refine a bit, because I can see where you're coming from. Mine asked me a few ethical questions as well, which probably wouldn't exactly fit with my description of a "conversation between colleagues." However, the questions were asked in a way that minimized the stress. Plus, mine were interspersed with personal questions, like asking what kinds of fun things I could see myself doing in my free time in 15-20 years. They weren't asking questions like, "Please define the main differences between a PPO and an HMO." In comparison to what some schools ask, and what they could have asked, it felt more like a conversation where they're trying to get to know you than an interview where they're trying to figure out what you're capable of, which I think is what they're going for.

I think I better expressed myself with that description... 🙂

Haha, Thanks!!

I don't know if I am being neurotic, but is it possible that all interview slots until end of January have been filled? Or do they give earlier interview dates to students of preference?

I was just curious because I got an II today for the end of January and it seems like most people's interviews are 1-1.5months max after the invite. This is almost 3 months??

Maybe I'm just being paranoid (which is completely possible and very probable, haha) but 3 months in between invite and interview seems like a pretty long time.

I think you are probably being paranoid. I received my interview invite 8 days before the scheduled date. I think this was because someone dropped out of the interview slot last minute and they wanted to fill it with an in-state applicant. Lol... and then I was placed on the alternate list. I seriously wouldn't stress about it. Congrats on the invite!

I don't know what's normal; I had 20 days between my II and the actual day-of. I've heard of others similar to you that have to sit in agony waiting for their day to come... Who knows the inner decision-making machinations of the adcoms?

A current med student on my interview day did mention that for those who get in on the earlier days, "it's obvious that the school thinks you could be a good fit here," but that is true of everyone to whom they offer interviews. The whole purpose of the interview is to either refute or substantiate that possibility. Great job making it this far, though! Just try not to let the waiting make your head explode...

Haha, Thanks!!

When were you complete??

I'm IS with pretty good stats and awesome EC... still haven't received an Interview Invite :/

You should keep in mind that interviews pre-winter break are almost done. When you think about how much time is taken between sessions, your date is not that odd. I know this is a stressful process but try not to read into things too much. MSU DEFINITELY accepts people all thoughout the interview season.

Edit: I seriously doubt that you were given anything other than the soonest available date. I just can't see them wanting to sort out who they should give the earlier dates to once they've decided to interview you. Typically that kind of sorting is done based on when invites themselves are given, across all schools I think, but not after the invite has been extended

Thanks everyone for all of the input! Definitely makes me feel better about it. I am just so excited for the interview, I want it to be here asap, haha. But, I can patiently wait a few more months if it means being one step closer to getting into MSU 🙂

In response to someone's question, I am IS, and I was complete 9/14.

I just noticed this post. I haven't had my interview yet but I hope it's as laid back as you felt yours was. I am just so pumped about it, I hope I can contain my excitement!

Good luck to you and everyone hoping to hear some good news tomorrow!

To those of you interviewing in EL on Thursday...GOOD LUCK! Remember to just be yourselves (Easier said than done..I completely understand this). I will be a student interviewer...we have a LARGE amount of interviewees on Thursday (30) so make sure to stand out 🙂 To answer a question that was posted here...the committee is meeting tomorrow night to hopefully make many of you HAPPY!
