Would love to spend some time here despite my lack of ties to this state.

what is the situation for OOS'ers here? what if you can prove ties to the state but not residency...do they even ask a q like that in the 2ndary? are they very numbers-oriented?

For a state school, looks like a decent OOS %. Does anyone know if they are from all over, or mostly mid-atlantic and/or people with ties to the area?

I'm from the west coast, no ties whatsoever to Maryland. I'll be an m1 here this fall. My roommates who also go to school here are from all over the country. Go ahead and apply, if you get an interview as an oos, there's a good chance of getting in.

good to know, it's a school I'd really like to go to.

My sister is an undergrad at Maryland, does that count as a link to the state? I have visited the campus several times and like it there. My sister loves the area as well. As far as secondaries go, do they screen before they send out secondaries?

That would be College Park. The medical school is part of University of Maryland, Baltimore - the professional campus in West Baltimore. I am also pretty sure they don't screen for secondaries. Good luck!

The "most recent MCAT date" drop down doesn't have an option for 2011. Haha.

Essays are the same as last year...
Briefly describe your most important exposure to clinical medicine. (1500 character max.)
Briefly describe your most satisfying experience related to community service. (1500 character max.)
What does it mean to enter into a profession? (1500 character max.)

For the first one, isn't it just a reiteration of one of the "most meaningful experiences" on AMCAS? I feel like I should just copy/paste it...Wouldn't make sense to expound on something else and claim that another activity was my most important experience just for the sake of having something different

What is everyone else doing?

Just received the secondary! ! three essays, 1500 characters each.
For the coursework part, are we supposed to fill in the last date of the semester we took that particular course, or the date we received our degree/ graduation?

Got it too. MS/MD program as well. Time to doctor some essays.

anyone else find the letters section odd if you're doing individual letters?

and the 2011 thing is fixed for mcat

secondary submitted! this one wasn't bad at all. I'm pretty excited about this school and hoping for some OOS love 🙂

Yes, I found that odd too! I sent them five, but only three of them are showing up?

Does anyone else's application say that their letters are missing? Mine were uploaded to AMCAS in May, but Maryland still says they haven't received them...

submitted. wasnt a huge fan of this secondary

You fly through these.

Mine take a while because I have RT editing them. I get my ideas down, she makes it sound good. Haha.

I have nothing to do at work or when i get home so papa writes. plus writing 15 other secondaries helps to get some ideas flowing or have answers pre written. i've used my optional TMDSAS essays at points

Yeah, 90% of my essays come from the secondary essays written for A&M's secondary or the optional TMDSAS essay (I only wrote one).

I think I will just copy paste one of my meaningful experiences, but expand on what I already said due to the low character limit on amcas. Not much has changed since I submitted my primary

Quick question - does independent research or study include working as an undergraduate with a PhD in his lab? He basically has a whole investigation going and calls all the shots. My role in this is lab procedures and discussion of procedures and results with the professor. That's not independent research, right?

thanks

If he's telling you what to do every step of the way, perhaps not, but if you are conducting parts of a greater project independently, I would count it.

Just got a complete email. It looks like us MD/MSers get a separate review committee.

did everyone use internet explorer or were others ok using firefox/safari/chrome?

how long did you guys write for your secondary essays?

It gives character limits, but it says briefly... so should I try to fill up all the spaces?? how long did you write?

I think I was somewhere between 1200-1500 characters for my responses. What's more important is that your answer is "complete."

What do they mean by this question:

* "What does it mean to enter into a profession? (1500 character max.)"

Does this relate to medicine or to any profession? This is the vaguest question ever...

Please help. Thanks.

I would talk about medicine because you are applying to, you know, medical school.

Although I'm not applying to this school, I would interpret it broadly? What does it mean to be a professional to you?

Things that come to mind: exercise of professional judgment, heightened responsibilities, unique ethical issues, scope of physician-patient relationship, conflict of interests, professional liability for one's actions

i know it's early but anybody have an idea how long after we are complete before we start hearing something back anything?

Is Maryland pretty slow, because it took awhile to get the complete email from them

does anyone know if they start interviewing OOS at the same time as IS? Some state schools dont' even interview OOS ppl until Jan, so I'd like a head's up.

do we even know when the first interviews come out at all?

As a nontrad student, this is a god awful secondary...

I had ~5 essays to write on the "MD Application" page alone. Then I was thrilled to find three more essays under the..."Essays" tab. :diebanana: Work experience, parent information, research information... ALL THIS CRAP IS ALREADY ON MY AMCAS!

Frazier, I'm a nontrad -- what were the other essays for people who have taken time off?

According to last year's thread, the first interview was given out on 9/3. We have a while.

No they dont wait to interview OOS. They interview residents and nonresidents concurrently.

The application process to Maryland left a lot to be desired. As an out-of-state applicant, the interview day felt almost disciminatory. After showing up on time for my interview, I was left waiting for half an hour for an oncologist. He finally called me in, sat me down, and ranted about why facebook sucks. Then he pulled out my AMCAS and asked me about specific grades I had gotten. Never once asked why I like medicine or even that school. I don't know if it was representative or not, and I've heard a lot of good things about the school itself, but be wary of the application process!

If you dont mind answering, when do invites and interviews typically take place
