No, I did not send them any update material, but I had been thinking about it since I had not heard anything from them for five months. I was actually opening up my computer to get their phone number to call them for a status check when I got the acceptance email.

Nice! Congratulations! I think I might send them an update. Hopefully I'll hear something soon!

Waitlisted today, here's hoping for an acceptance!

Wow, thanks for sharing and congrats (hey, its better than the alternative since I don't think anyone will be straight up accepted at this point). It looks like the April wait-lists have already begun! When did you interview?

Waitlisted today as well. Interviewed back in October.

Yikes! But it's not Friday! Oh man, now my inbox-checking anxiety has gone up a bit... 🙂

lol me too. all season, i thought i could relax until fridays. now im going to be on alert every day. i dont need any more stress.

Qpwo and rasberry, when did you interview??

Does this mean that from this point forward the best everyone can expect is wait-list or rejection? I interviewed quite late in the season, so am still hopeful for a straight acceptance. Anyone have any insight?

I've tried looking through last year's threads. It really is a mess. It's funny that last year, they were complaining about how hard it was to decipher patterns from the year before. Basically, stay hopeful. People have been wait-listed late in the game and then quickly given an acceptance. Others are wait-listed early and then finally end up getting an acceptance. You never know.

Thanks! I'm a reapplicant, interviewed on 2/7

Could anyone shed some light on how UMass's wait list works?

This wait is killing me...

Re-posting what ohnoreilly so graciously made. My gut tells me that if you are waitlisted earlier versus later, you're more likely to get an acceptance. However, the data from the past couple years really is spotty at best and the sample size is pretty small considering... and there are certainly people getting waitlisted and then accepted in May.

What I have heard, with regards to the waitlist is that its unranked and Umass will select people of similar backgrounds (or gender?) when someone withdraws.

I interviewed back in October. And per the AAMC suggestion, I think they filled the class as of Fri March 30, now just waitlists. They do not over accept.

.This is a quote from the wait list email that I got the other day. Hopefully this sheds some light on their process-

The Committee on Admissions has reviewed your application, and has been impressed by your academic and personal qualifications for the study of medicine. Unfortunately, at this time all of the places in the class entering August, 2012, have been filled. However, I am pleased to offer you a place on our wait list for the class entering the University of Massachusetts Medical School in August, 2012. Those on the list may be considered for acceptance at any time between now and August if a place in the class should develop..

Thank you for that information! It's much appreciated.

Do people know/think that there will be more waitlists over the coming weeks?

Yes, definitely. Even though the class has been filled, not everyone will keep their seat. So, over the coming weeks there will be batches of wait-listing. Look above for a recent post about last year's waitlist/acceptance activity.

Any news today?? I'm dying over here since they switched it up and sent e-mails out on Wednesday... :scared:

Thanks RedSox10. Do you have any idea if they try to match only age, gender?, race?, or match stats as well?

Perhaps there are other factors taken into consideration: school, major, hometown, etc.

Anyway, it's completely out of our hands, so no point in worrying about it. We have no control over who declines their acceptance, and therefore our chances at being taken off the waitlist in response.

Most of what I know is heresy, so take it with a grain of salt but...I've heard that UMass likes to pick a class demographically similar to the state of Mass (give or take). If that's the case, you'd assume that if one person of a certain demographic withdrew, they might exchange that person with someone similar. Also, since med schools like to keep a certain balance of males and females, I wouldn't be surprised if they match gender as well. Not sure if that helps at all!

I'm going to send UMass a rejection letter! I'm a non-trad and we can't wait forever for my state school to make up their F-ing mind. Older students (and any married students w/ kids, for that matter) can't wait forever. We have to find places to live, daycare for kids, and job for wife. So I'm rejecting UMass and going somewhere else that accepted me in a reasonable amount of time post-interview. Good riddance and thanks so much for making us all wait such a long time. Life goes on, and sorry UMass you can't have me. any older students that feel like this process is discriminatory? PM me - perhaps we can put together a lawsuit. I wouldn't mind the Commonwealth of MA paying for my private school tuition. Serves them right for taking all of my taxes, sending them to UMass, and then requiring no accountability from the admissions folks there. What really sucks about the whole thing is that my interviews went really well and I truly liked the school. But this whole admissions piece really soured the experience for me, and my family just couldn't be in limbo anymore. So I am rejecting UMass. Sorry.

This is me. I completely understand your frustration. I'm stuck in a situation where I need to figure out what my future and the future of my family will be like, but I can't because of UMass. It is quite frustrating. But I'm still on the edge of my seat hoping for some good news.

Pleaaassseee UMass.

hahaha hearsay, not sure how that happened. thanks for catching that. any news today anyone?

Isn't it a little unusual for them to have only released (seemingly) one set of wait lists? And at that they did it on a Wednesday. Umass is a cruel mistress.

I did notice on mdapplicants.com that someone posted yesterday that they received a wait-list from Umass. I'm not sure if this person was actually wait-listed yesterday (would be kind of odd, I think?) or whether this was a previous wait-list just posted yesterday. Either way, I'm at odds with finding any kind of pattern, but it did look like the past two years, 2 rounds of wait-lists had gone out prior to the 18th...The again, last year wait-lists came on Fridays, so maybe this past round (on a Wednesday) was a fluke and we should really be waiting until Friday?

oh well, more waiting I assume......

haha just bustin chops, trying to lighten the mood while we wait in agony...

Pleaaassseee UMass.

Good to hear from someone in my same situation! We've pretty much given up. My wife signed her contract in eastern mass and we put an offer on a condo. Can't wait forever. I have never heard of interviewing at a school and then not hearing ANYTHING for such a long time. Wow. Every other school i interviewed with I got an acceptance about 2-3 weeks later. So ridiculous. Makes me ashamed to be from this state... err... commonwealth.

Anyway, enough ranting! Good luck out there w/ your careers and stay positive, at least more positive than myself, hee hee. See you out there.

Just FYI everyone I got an acceptance today just before 3 PM Eastern Time. It looks like they've switched to Wednesday announcements after all!

I interviewed in mid-December and sent a letter of interest about 5 weeks ago.

Congrats! Were you guys waitlisted before you were accepted?

You can see from aker's MDapps that she was not waitlisted. Outright acceptance! Didn't know that was still happening at this point. Accepted folk must be withdrawing earlier than usual this year.

No I was not waitlisted. Straight acceptance.

Just additional info... I interviewed back in September. I actually sent the admissions office an Email this morning asking for an update. They responded right away and said that there was no update for my file. Three hours later, I got the acceptance.

Did you ever send a letter of interest / update letter? I haven't yet, don't know if it would make a difference. 🙁

Anyone venture to guess why umass straight accepted people before the individuals that they already waitlisted? Congrats to those lucky ones who did get in.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that their acceptances now are similar to what some schools would call their "high priority" waitlist. Rather than putting people on a high priority waitlist, they function more like a rolling process with the top people still getting in, whereas the people who they know are waitlisted and most likely won't have that opportunity to come off the list get a direct notification earlier? Like I said, I'm not sure, but that would be to be my guess.

Any March interviewees hear back yet? I interviewed 3/22 and they said "you should hear back by early April." It's no longer "early" April and I have yet to hear anything either way.

aker321 and TBoardman, would you mind posting your stats? Congrats to you both!

No, I never sent a letter of interest. I did however send an update back in February when I had a paper published. Aside from that I didn't contact them.

GPA: 3.9
MCAT: 30M <<--- They apparently do not weight the writing a whole lot.
6 years of volunteer work in a medically related position and decent ECs

I interviewed in September and they told me a few weeks... Seven months later I finally heard something. Don't get discouraged just yet.

I interviewed in early november and have heard nothing...only school I haven't heard from and it was the 2nd school I interviewed at.

Hey UMass, remember when we met in October? I really liked you. A lot. I just wish you would talk to me...

Same....and same...

I think/hope today might be a big day for wait-lists. :xf:
