Are there any other MD/MPH applicants who are scheduled for the Oct 24/25 interview? If so, I just want to see if I could carpool with someone to Palm Beach. I figure it would be more entertaining (and a little easier) to carpool instead of taking the rail. I'll throw down some cash for gas.

Interview Invite: 9/16
Complete: 7/29

Hoping to schedule the interview for Oct. 3/4 for the MD/MPH program. Really glad I got this interview-one of my top choices, definitely.

Dear Miami,

Thank you for sending your secondary again. I appreciate your effort to motivate my lazy self to complete your thorough secondary. At this point I am wondering if its too late or worth doing, but I will attempt. I hope we meet in the future!

Your Pal,

Dr. Dre

Anyone flying in to Ft Lauderdale on Oct 29 want to split transport to campus? I'm hoping the $250 savings by flying southwest isn't going to be taken back by cabfare.

Just come back from my interview, and I LOVED it. The students, administration, and faculty are very enthusiastic about the program, and it's clear they take pride in being at UM. As for the interview, it was conversational and there was no intimidation factor or grilling.

I will type up a more detailed review in a little bit, but for now, all I can say is I was very impressed!

Set-up: The day begins with an introductory presentation (includes focus on curriculum, clinical facilities, mission trips, and financial aid) from Dean Weisman, and then a student who explains the many dual degree programs that are offered through UM. The interview will be scheduled at 10:15 AM, 11:15 AM, or 1:15 PM (you will have a folder telling you when your interview is and who your interviewer will be), and it is approximately 1 hour. Because it is an open file interview, you will be asked specific questions about your file and should be prepared to answer them thoroughly. However, the interview itself is not intense, and in fact, every attempt is made to make it conversational and stress-free.

Food provided: Breakfast (danishes, muffins, orange juice, and coffee), and lunch (Chinese fried rice and chicken, salad, and drinks)

Questions you absolutely HAVE to know: Why Miller? Why Medicine? And Tell me about yourself.

Questions of interest:
* Is attendance mandatory? No.
* Is the curriculum available online? Yes, every class you take in your four years will be recorded, and can be accessed at any time.
* How do academic societies work? Each society has 12 faculty-physicians, and 12 each of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students. Students are put into academic societies at random, and meet with their society every MWF.
* What typed of curriculum? Block with PBL sessions in between each block. The best part of the curriculum are the sub-internships, which allow 4th year students to play the same role as a first year intern during residency (excellent practice).
* Is it necessary to know Spanish? No, there are translators available. However, if you want to, the school provides lessons every Tuesday for free as well as access to the Rosetta Stone software.
* How does the lottery system work? You are randomly assigned a number. Whoever is first in selecting third year clerkships is last in selecting fourth year clerkships; the order is reversed to maintain fairness. The medical student did emphasize that in the end, though, it doesn't matter because students get to do what they want anyway.

DrShazam, did you interview for the MPH program as well, or just the MD?

For all those flying out to Miami for interviews and want to fly into FLL for cheaper airfare. You can book a seat on this shuttle site to take you anywhere in the Miami-FLL area. It's pretty cheap. WAY better than taking the cab. I flew into FLL last year for vacation and they dropped me off at my hotel in south beach for about $30. Just a little tip for everyone 🙂 So excited! See you some of you 10/14!

Just the MD. Of the group today, four were interviewing for the dual degree program, and it seems those students were literally just visiting the UM campus for the tour and introductory presentation. Their actual interview is at the Palm Beach site the day after.

Also, for those who decide later on that they want to do the accelerated MD/MPH (4-year program), but didn't indicate it on their secondary when they first filled it out, can e-mail Dean Weisman with the response to the additional three questions on the secondary specifically for the program.

:luck:

I scheduled the same dates; I'm probably going to rent a car since I'm somewhat familiar with the South Florida area having driven down there a few times when I lived in Jax but I'd be more than willing to carpool.

How long does it take to get the e-mail with interview details after you call them and set up your interview date?

To those who already had their MD/MPH interview, what time were you done? I'm trying to schedule a flight back to the west coast while it's still relatively inexpensive...(I haven't received the interview details from the school yet). Thanks!

finished at 1:30 pm today 🙂

It took about a week to get the interview confirmation email.

@Claralax: The last activity on the schedule is lunch, which starts at 1230. Also, I got a decently priced flight going into Fort Lauderdale and out of Palm Beach Int'l. I'd look into it if you don't want to head all the way back to Miami after the Palm Beach interview/tour.

PM me and we should discuss the carpool thing.

are any of you MD/MPH -ers applying MD and MD/MPH??

I feel totally stupid asking, but they sent me two seperate interview invites (one for MD program and one for MD/MPH) but i still interview at just the 2 day MD/MPH interview (and ignore my other email)?

perhaps its just that i got back from vacation and my brain is frazzled, just wanted to check with anyone else in the same position.

Yeah the more, the merrier! I wonder how many MD/MPH interviewees out of how many overall there are at the UM interviews.
During my interview day, four out of ~15 students were MD/MPH. :luck:

I would call them up and ask (or hopefully someone here can assist), but Dean Weisman did say during the presentation that applicants to the MD/MPH program effectively double their chances of getting accepted. :luck:

- just call them. They are super nice!

For those that have interviewed already...Did they say when you would find out about acceptances?

In general, the AAMC mandates that no institution make any offer of admission (or of "waitlist") before October 15th. If you interview before then, there's a good chance that you'll hear on or just shortly after that date. I'm not sure about the timeline if you interview after that date. Best of luck!

Weisman said the first round would be going out close to Halloween. Let's hope to get accepted right off the bat because being waitlisted last year meant getting rejected--they didn't accept any off the w/l for either the MD program or the MD/MPH.

Yeah, the emails and agendas you will receive may be confusing for several reasons; however, to scheduled the dates, I called Agnus. She's very nice and will schedule you for both days over the phone. (you are interviewing for both MD and MD/MPH over the two days, meaning you also have two shots at getting accepted which is nice)

Also, they will send out agendas for both days - and even though both days have time allotted in your schedule for "interviews" you again only have one interview. I interviewed at the main campus, but the four others today interviewed at the regional campus. (i just sat in the conference room for 40 minutes waiting and talking with the admins during my "interview time" at JFK)

Lastly, when you meet the med students at lunch at the regional campus, remember they are not MD/MPH students and actually did their first and second years at FAU.

Miami rocks. kill it at the interviews. the end.

Thanks for the heads up! although it also made me stressed that i should have scheduled my interview for earlier...

How was the rest of the day and all outside of the interview? I'm still stunned that I got an invite to the MD/MPH program earlier today; this program definitely feels like the perfect fit for what I want to do.

A ton of walking around on a very hot day. Idk what you can do to prevent the sweating, but it was an issue for me. Wear comfortable shoes and if you are a guy, wear a dress shirt that you won't mind get sweaty in. But I loved everything about the interview. Number 1 choice for sure.

I will be interviewing for the MD/MPH program on November 14-15. Anyone else? I know that on the 15th, we are responsible for getting ourselves from Miami to Lake Worth where the county hospital is (about 1.5 hours). Does anyone know a really cheap way to get down there? Or, would any other MD/MPH candidates want to split a rental car? They're about $60-70 for the day, so if we got 3 or 4 people it'd be really economical.

Good Luck everyone! :luck:

Hello all, first time poster here. I am super excited to be interviewing at my #1 Oct 3/4 for MD/MPH, flying into Sunday and probably staying in a hotel in Miami, renting a car and driving to Palm Beach reallllly early Tuesday morning then flying out of Fort Lauderdale that afternoon. I'm wondering if anyone else is doing the MD/MPH interview and would like to get in on the car rental, etc.

For University of Miami there is no place to check your status.

My Florida schools are rounding in...still no love from UM. =\ Please UM please please please. =)

When does UM start sending rejections? I'm a little worried I haven't heard anything yet.

what does +1 mean? I guess that means a rejection?

I am pretty sure Dean Weissman said that there will be no rejections or acceptances until after Oct. 15th. And even then, they like to wait on making that decision for as long as possible.

Does anyone know when the Tuesday part of the interview ends for those that are doing the MD/MPH interview? I'm trying to figure out a good flight time that day.

lol no, I am just worried, like you. I was complete 7/19, completed my undergraduate degree at UM, and feel a bit deflated. I have received other II's, even to a couple of my reach schools, but I would really like to at least have the option of attending the U. I keep thinking, omg, what did I do wrong on this secondary?!?! I have not lost all hope yet though... keep holding on. :xf: good luck to you.

Thanks same to you!

I guess today would be the first day for offers? Anyone hear anything yet?

I interviewed here on 10/1 and Dean Weissman mentioned oct 26th as to when we would be hearing back. not sure if that applied for the earlier interview dates

I just interviewed this past week and both Dean Weisman and Agnes said the first round of acceptances will be given out on Oct 26th. I believe Agnes also said the committee meets every two weeks to present candidates and hand out acceptances.
