Dibs! I called dibs, so if any of you get it, let the admissions committee know that I have dibs on it.

Interview Invite this afternoon! I was complete in late November. There were tons of dates available in March so don't despair! Wow. I'm in shock.

So I am one of the lucky ones, that somehow has gotten into both the MD and MD/MPH programs!!! I am extremely excited. However, now I have a problem (but a great problem). I'm having a really tough time deciding. The MPH itself is not a huge factor because I figure I can get it by taking a year off or doing it during residency (for free even maybe). The main factor is the difference in curriculum. PBL vs. Lecture. And the difference in class size.

I'm very social, so learning in groups would be nice. And it sounds like the first semester for MD students is the hardest, whereas for MD/MPH they get eased into it by spreading out anatomy. But 50 people is a very close group... a little too close maybe...
MD you have a larger social circle, but I'm wondering if they still do group work or if I will be studying by myself every day? I just might loose my marbles.

Does anyone have any opinions on this/are in either program??

Oh, and I'm In-State. So there's also the $10,000 tuition difference per year....
I, too, got into both MD and MD-MPH...after getting the financial assistance letter, I chose MD only because it amounted to a full ride if I did that (I'm also IS). I happen to have a background in Public Health already, and I figured I'd be able to work a bit more if I started school in Aug vs June. Finally, I should say that I have a strong interest in Public Health but I have a strong background and other comparable qualifications otherwise I would strongly recommend you do the MD-MPH degree because it is integrated, and quite frankly, if you remember from Dr Weisman's statements on interview day, the future of medicine is MD-MPH irrespective of specialization. He even stated that they were considering having an MD-MPH-only track in the future during my 11/11 interview. I also know MD-MPH's in my work that are EM physicians, and Surgeons, so you are not losing anything by going MD-MPH. Your concerns about group work should be minimal because that is how you will get most of the work done whether it is the MD or MPH part given what all the students say about class cohesion, and collaboration...you decide how much of it you want!

are people sending updates to the general admissions email? and if so, do you usually get a confirmation?

thanks!

Ok I have waited a little over three months now for my MD decision, already waitlisted MD/MPH back in January. Has anyone waited this long to hear back or am I unnecessarily worrying?

I just received an interview invite here.
Open dates are through the end of March.

Anyone know if I will be interviewing for a waitlist spot?

Also I am already accepted to a SUNY which is a lot cheaper than miami. Anyone have any input on whether I should go to this interview? Or if there is anything that stands out in particular about University of Miami?

I am a california resident btw.
Thanks

No, you can still be accepted. If you go to their website, it states they leave a certain amount of spots during each adcom meeting for late interviewers. There were some SDNers who interviewed in Late March of last year and were accepted in April. Your SUNY school is a lot cheaper, but going to the U could be more beneficial for residency. If you have the cash, I would go. Congrats. I received one last week.

doesn't seem like they take that long to call or send the acceptance.

I say do it.

I am waitlisted at UM and accepted at a SUNY. Also a Cali resident. I would definitely choose UM over any SUNY. In terms of how much you will be spending, UM is not significantly more expensive than SUNYs, especially as a private institution. Basic Science/First Years are similar everywhere but the clinical experiences at UM are tremendous. Last year's match list for UM was amazing. It's Miami...c'mon! I am really hoping to get off that alternate.

As of Feb. 27 they said the next adcom meeting would be March 21...

Can any current UM students comment on second look? Do you learn enough new info to justify a plane ticket?

Also, does anyone know when we should hear about financial incentives?

anyone else on the alternate list?

Me! Me!

Would love to hear if anyone has been accepted off the alternate list yet. Also, has anyone contacted UM about their rank? I asked Dr. Weisman and he said I was "reasonably near the top" of the list....but I'm not sure if he's just saying that so I'll be quiet or not lol. Ideas?

I was put on the alternate list October 27th and accepted November 17th. I also know someone else who had the same thing happen.

It happened. How'd you find out? I called before and didn't get a peep.

Those going for second look -

Anyone want to split a hotel room? I was planning on doing SpringHill - same as I did for interviews. It's $170 for 2 beds vs. $160 for one, so we would save roughly $75.

PM if interested.

Hey everyone, I'm a student at UM and remember dealing with the SDN stuff during application time.... stressful but don't worry, you'll get in somewhere and it's all worth it!

If anyone has any questions, please ask here or PM me and I'll do my best to answer.

For 2nd look wknd, some people came, but not a lot. If you live in FL and can drive down, then go for it, but I wouldn't plan an expensive cross-country trip with flights/hotels just to see the school again. You remember it from the interview, it's an amazing place that's growing like crazy with new buildings, plus we're in Miami. Trust me, you'll have TONS of free time in med school yrs 1/2, and it's nice being able to go to the beach, bars, clubs, etc, or just be outside eating in shorts during mid-December. Everyone here is really happy and no one I know regrets their decision to come to UM, so definitely come if you're accepted!!

For the wait-list, last year they didn't take anyone off the list, sorry. This year may be different as things change, so keep your hopes up but don't be too expectant.

For those of you coming to 2nd look, many fof the first-years are offering a free place to stay for the weekend, so don't book hotels yet. If you haven't gotten an email you should soon, as we're still submitting our housing info to the person in charge of that.

Good luck!👍

Michael -

Thanks for the heads up. Do you think second look is a good way to meet new classmates, or do enough prospects choose another school that you end up meeting a lot of non-classmates?

What about additional info about finances? I'm choosing between Miami and a state school and some financial help would really make this easier. I figure second look would offer some insight.

Finally - how long do people usually stay? We haven't gotten an itinerary yet but I figure I'd come Thursday night and maybe stay until Saturday afternoon if there are things going on and people to meet after the info sessions on Friday. It's a pretty big choice--I figure I should know a bit more about the culture I'm about to jump into (for four years!).

Cheers-

I just got the acceptance call today and this is more than likely where I will be attending. Is there a Facebook group for accepted applicants?

dawg2012 when did you interview??

did anyone else get acceptance calls today? i interviewed in february and haven't heard a thing. from the admin committee mtg today i wonder if they called everyone today or if they are calling some tomorrow.

Interviewed in Feb. too and didn't hear anything today... guessing that's not a good sign 🙁

I interviewed on Feb. 27 and got the call at 5:17 today.

Congrats to those accepted! Did you interview for MD or MD/MPH?

Just randomly called Miami today, and they haphazardly mentioned that I've been granted an II. Am I interviewing for a spot on the waitlist or do I have the opportunity to get accepted?

You still have a shot. Two years ago, they accepted early and interviewed some strong late applicants later whom they couldn't offer interview spots. At every committee meeting, they save spots for the later interviews. This is found on their website. Congrats. I interview on Monday, March 26. This school is amazing.

I've been complete since November and still haven't heard anything... I guess I'll call tomorrow and find out what is going on.

Has anyone else who interviewed in February not heard a thing by phone or e-mail?

I also called in and was told I had an interview invite over the phone this morning. Exctied!!🙂🙂

Awesome!!! Did you just ask for the status of your application? Have you received an email with the actual II or did you schedule it over the phone?!?

Yep. I just asked for the status of the app. I scheduled on the phone for next friday 3/30. I was told it is the final and only available interview day. I haven't received the confirmation email yet.

I called and was told that I had not been granted an interview. Good luck to those who did!

When I called they said no decision had been made... I'm assuming that's a no

I just called. For some strange reason, it hurts less to hear a rejection over the phone than to read in an email.😕

Best wishes :luck: to everyone on their journey to becoming a physician!!
If you are going to Miller School of Medicine, you will LOVE it!!

I recently started an acceptance thread for the 2016 class. If you are an accepted applicant, then feel free to join in discussion.
