Hey guys. So I interviewed at Duluth 9/23. I was accepted last week. The details of the interview are like this:
- It is really relaxed.
- Susan in the office is great!
- The interviews consisted (for me) of a faculty member for 1 hour then a community rep for another hour. Yes, back to back.
- Interviews were based off of my application and response to secondary questions.

There were no curve balls, relax and enjoy yourself! The people are great and the area is gorgeous. If you have any more questions let me know. I'll try to be as helpful as possible.

Interview Invite!!!!! I'm IS and submitted my secondary on 9/4, so it ended up being about a 7 week wait. Congrats on the acceptance MDgirl5354!

II, OOS but strong ties to the state. 3.67/3.45, 30Q. Anyone know what the Twin Cities interviews are like?

Has anyone attempted to request an In-Area interview? Does anyone know if they are open to this?

I tried to do this a few weeks ago to coordinate with my interview at mayo, and got a pretty weird response (something along the lines of "our interview coordinator works with applicants to switch their dates") and then a swift rejection, so my advice would be not to send one. Granted, I'm OOS and so prob had a good chance of being rejected anyways...but from my experience they seem to be less receptive to these types of letters than other schools.

I interviewed at TC campus last week and can give a quick summary of the day. First of all, my interview group was very small which was nice because it made everything more personal. There were two interviews, one with a faculty member in the morning and another with a med student in the afternoon. The faculty member interview is open file save the stats. Mine had questions prepared beforehand and tailored to my app and essays. So, make sure to know your AMCAS and essays well. It was very laid back and enjoyable overall. The length of my interview approached one hour. Don't know if that is normal or not. I didn't get any ethical questions but one of the other interviewees said that they did.

The second interview with the med student has no bearing on your admission. The student told me that at the beginning of the interview. So, I don't know what the purpose of the med student interview is other than for you as an applicant to ask any further questions you might have about the school. Because the interview had no admissions implications it was once again very relaxing. This interview was shorter and closer to 30 minutes in length.

Overall, the entire day was enjoyable and I was very impressed by the U. All the students that I met seemed friendly and happy to be there which was a positive sign.

i interviewed about 2 weeks ago and same sentiments. i posted earlier about it in the page before. granted, i was NOT told that the student interview had no bearing on the admissions process and i'm leaning towards disagreeing with the poster before me. from what i saw, the medical students were given lists of questions to ask us and they (at least mine) was taking copious notes, which to me makes it seem like it is very important. just my $0.02. feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

Accepted as well yesterday! interviewed 3rd week of Sept.

Thanks for the info - it sounds like a pretty typical interview day, minus the small interview group. I'm glad to hear it was a good experience and that the students you met liked it; I know a few that go to the U and they love it, especially the rotations in third and fourth year.
Thanks again and good luck!

Congratulations! How long did it take for them to notify you of the acceptance after your interview? Was it within the suggested 6-8 week time frame?

Thanks! I was accepted just short of 6 weeks after my interview date.

I have two questions:

1) Where did you stay the night before your interview? I'm guessing student hosts isn't an option.
2) How long does it take to get to the airport from the Mayo building?

Thanks in advance!

1. The Days Inn on University. I also heard people stayed at the Radisson as well.
2. It took me like an hour on Super Shuttle to get from the airport to my hotel (b/c I was like the last one). Maybe some hotels have shuttles from the airport though I know the Days Inn doesn't. You could try the Light Rail and then the buses?

Cool, thanks! Is the Days Inn really close to the Mayo building? I know the campus is huge so I really don't want to get lost in the morning.

they have a shuttle that drops you off right there in the morning. just ask them about it and they'll sign you up. it's really convenient. good luck with your interview!

I interviewed recently at Duluth. My interview was pretty much exactly the same except we went into a lot of Native American and federal Indian law issues.

interviewed last week of sept. and got an acceptance on mon. really excited, LOVED the school!

How long does it take TC to send out secondaries? I received an e-mail 10/03 telling me that my AMCAS application was received/verified, but I haven't heard anything since.

mine took almost 1.5 months. to the point where i was inundated with other secondaries and was about to lose hope for minnesota. and then BAM it came in my email inbox. it's a screened secondary too btw. at least i'm pretty sure it is.

Huh. Well, I've pretty much got all of my other secondaries completed at this point so I guess I'll just relax and wait for this one to come in. Thanks!

Got wait listed. Anyone have experience or know anything about Minnesota's wait list?

Got wait listed. Anyone have experience or know anything about Minnesota's wait list?

Two of my close friends who live in the med fraternity with me were wait listed but still got in and are in this year's MS1 class with me (and are both waaay smarter than me, so I have no clue why they were wait listed). What happens is that the U of MN (and most other med schools) wait until May 15ish for everyone who was accepted to give their final decision about whether or not they want to come to the U of MN. Around this time the U of MN will also tell you what number you are on the wait list. As soon as May 15 is over, the U of MN will begin to go down the wait list (so if you're #1 on the wait list, you'll be the first person to receive an acceptance call). One of my friends got a call like two days after May 15 and got accepted. The med school usually goes pretty far down the wait list spot (because many people who are on the wait list have gotten accepted at other schools).

Did you receive the waitlist notice via email or snail mail?

I got a letter in the mail

Do you friends remember anything about the "Alternate student list", or how many were accepted that were put on the list? The letter mentions that I may still be rejected or moved to this alternate student list. Is that where the wait listed students who don't get rejected get moved to on May 15th?

One last question shortringo. Minnesota is my #1 choice, I would have ended my admission process with that acceptance. Did your friends send letters of intent to Minnesota?

Thanks for your advice

i distinctly remember dean white saying that they don't even look at those. whatever you send in after your secondary isn't even looked at when evaluating the alternate and wait list applicants. i remember dean white saying that the point of that was so that they can reevaluate everyone on an equal playing field.

I also have heard this from Paul White who is an awesome and straightforward guy btw.

pm'd instead

Yep, the alternate student list is the wait list. I was re-reading the 2010-2011 app thread from last year, and someone mentioned that 2 years ago Mn's wait list went as low as 71. From the looks of it, I know for sure they went down to at least 41.

Good Luck!!! This is such a long, grueling process!!! Keep interviewing and see what happens Feel free to ask any other questions.

Yikes. Of course, just sent my In-Area request 30 seconds go, then checked this thread only to read this post.

I will keep my fingers crossed. Worst case: I will be swiftly rejected and we will now have a sample size of n=2 for this theory.

For those of you that were accepted to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, did your online page (where it shows if your secondary is complete or not) show any type of status update after you received a call from the Dean?

An in-area request doesn't guarantee an interview; all it does is expedite the review of your application. I see no reason why a med school would pass up on an applicant they're interested in because of a reasonable request. Traveling is expensive and inconvenient for some.

I hope it works for you though!

Nope.. just received a call.

Hi there!

I haven't received my secondary application yet and I'm wondering if someone who has received it could post the essay questions/prompts so that I can get started with brain-storming and writing. 🙂 I saw that the secondary from last year is posted, but I'm not sure if it has changed this year.

I was wrapping-up with graduate school earlier this year, so I didn't get my application in until October...hoping to turn around my secondary as quickly as possible.

Also, did anyone else who submitted their primary in October get verified yet? It has been over 3 weeks and my application is still in line for verification. I know it can take up to 6 weeks, but I'm curious how long other applications submitted in October are taking...I didn't think it was a high-traffic time for AMCAS.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

um read the first post on the first page of this thread. And if you're logged in, you can search a thread first before posting questions.

From this I assume that there are a number of applicants who wait until the deadline to submit the primaries. I never would have figured this since it opens in June, but obviously your situation with graduate school is different. Like the OP said it helps a lot to just skim through the thread to get a overall feel of how the cycle is going for applicants under similar circumstances. I would assume that after your primary is sent over to UMN it will take a week or so ( maybe more ) to get your secondary since there is a "review" process.

I did read the first post on this thread a few days ago and when I did so I noted that it is from 5/22/11, which would mean that the secondary application questions that were posted are from the 2010-2011 application cycle. I'm looking for the 2011-2012 secondary application information. Perhaps the secondary application has not changed from last year?

Yeah, it's the same as last years. If the U of MN is one of your top choices I'd recommend just working on secondaries for your other schools first, mostly because other schools will almost definitely get back to you before the U. That way when you eventually do hear back, you won't have to work so hard. Basically just cut and paste from those other essays, refine 'em a bit, and you're good to go.

Excellent! Thanks for the help & best of luck to you with the rest of the application cycle :luck:

Hi everyone,

Any idea how long the wait is from when your primary is verified until you get a fee request from the U of MN? My primary was just verified on Wednesday and all the other schools I applied to sent me a fee request that day and verified my payment by the next day. Still haven't heard a peep out of the U of MN and I'm wondering if I should (A) wait -OR- (B) call them to see what the deal is.

Thoughts??? Just wondering if anyone else had this experience with their Minnesota application.

Thanks!

I don't remember any delay. If there was, it wasn't more than two days. I just remember going to the fee section an paying.

Did you get to this 'fee section' via an email link that they sent? I haven't heard anything from them since they sent the email asking to declare which campus (duluth or tc). I followed the link to that site tonight and there is no updated info or additional links.

I've been reading your posts and it doesn't seem like you've gotten a secondary invite yet. After you choose which campus you want I believe they review your application at that campus. Minnesota actually does a review of your primary application and will invite you to fill out a secondary one if they wish to pursue your application

No, definitely no secondary. My primary was just verified on Wednesday. At my other schools, they requested a fee on Wednesday or Thursday after my primary was verified. After they received my fee, they sent additional emails saying that now that my payment was processed, they would begin review of my primary application. I haven't heard ANYTHING from Minnesota yet. Do they review primary applications before asking applicants to pay a fee? I'm worried that something fell through the cracks and my application is sitting there in a "waiting for payment" file.

Yes, Minnesota does an initial review before asking for any payment. They are one of the few schools that don't scam you by taking money from anyone even if they don't stand a chance
