I prematched here this morning. I found it odd since I was at the very first interview date.

Congratulations. The same thing happened to me. Just goes to show that interview date isn't a determining factor -- everybody has the same chance.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US, SA is nice but it's not even in the same league, they aren't even really comparable. Better food, cultural opportunities, bigger diversity, great sports, symphony, opera, ballet, great bars/nightlife.

Well actually SA is the second largest city in Texas right behind Houston (according to wiki, feel free to double check the facts tho). Better food, culture, diversity?? That's strictly opinion. True there are more pro sports there. If you like waiting in line a lot and paying more money I would say the Houston nightlife is much better. I agree Houston has more people, but that doesn't mean it's better. Plus I'm not sayin SA is better than anywhere. I would rather go to med school in Houston too, but it's the school not the city itself.

There was a pre-matriculation timeline/deadline list that was posted a while ago. It has dates for sending in your transcripts, scholarship app, etc. Just keep up with that. There's not really much to do for the time being.

I've heard this at all my texas interview days, and verified it with the admissions staff at UTH, OOS students get moved down to instate tuition if they get 1k in scholarship money.

The last I heard, the average step score this past year was 236, but I think a handful a students had yet to take the exam at that time. No idea about your second question. Step scores and residency placement are pretty individualized. Your own hard work will be the major determining factor for both.

How are in state students notified of where they match? Do they get an email from the school or from TMDSAS?
Anybody know if OOS are notified at the same time? Or anytime? It makes sense that they could be notified anytime, but I don't know if schools would make the effort.

TMDSAS doesn't email you, but you can check the website. A lot of schools will email you the morning of the match welcoming you, etc.

OOS can be notified at any time. Depends on when the school feels like sending out acceptances.

Recently, I was notified of some family issues and I would very much appreciate staying closer to home (1 hour outside houston).

The question is...if I dont get matched to UTH, but to El Paso, I would have to reject the application and reapply. I have heard that reapplying with a prior acceptance is frowned upon as it is viewed as being more concerned about the school you go to than a career in medicine.

An option is that I could withdraw my ElPaso app so I could reapply if needed with a "clean slate".
But this is risky.

What should I do? Any advice ?

I would be very wary of withdrawing your application even as a result of serious family issues. If you're dead-set on doing so, I think it's preferable to withdraw from TT - El Paso compared to turning down a full-blown acceptance, but I really don't think it's a very good idea. You could even ask to defer if you got the acceptance, remember.

Who knows if or when you'll ever get the chance to hold another acceptance if El Paso is the only one to make you an offer this year.

I understand family commitments, but unfortunately that's sometimes a sacrifice that comes with the extreme privilege of becoming a physician.

I have a question! I have some friends who are students at UTSW. From what they tell me, the faculty and students are very close (i.e. professors inviting students to dinner at their homes, picnics, etc) Is this the type of atmosphere that can similarly be found at UT Houston? Thanks! 🙂

Yep, faculty members come to retreat in August. Some invite their master advisory groups to their houses for dinners/barbecues. There is a christmas party every year hosted by a faculty member that is open for all students/faculty and their children. The vast majority of faculty members here are just awesome people, IMO.

Like UTSW breaks down the incoming class into small colleges of 40 students each where you get to know all these 40 people really well. So, does UTH have something like this that facilitates social gatherings on a relatively smaller and more intimate level.

So this is a vague question, but how is the social atmosphere at UTH? Like UTSW breaks down the incoming class into small colleges of 40 students each where you get to know all these 40 people really well. So, does UTH have something like this that facilitates social gatherings on a relatively smaller and more intimate level.

We're broken into smaller groups called master advisory groups. Pretty much anything you do, you're broken up by the alphabet, so you get to know the 10-20 people around you in the alphabet really well. I do feel like the schools makes an effort to break us up, since the class is so large.

Can anyone weigh in on the advantages the Houston medical center gives uth students? I'm from San Antonio and really like uthscsa (particularly because of their 4-year md/mph program and I'm also not too sure of Houston's block scheduling), but I'm not sure whether to rank uth higher just because the medical center might provide more opportunities for better rotations, research, etc.

If you have better reasons to stay in San Antonio (family, etc) then I don't think the med center should steal you away from there. It's a great place to learn for so many reasons, and I truly think it has been an asset to my education, but I don't think it's worth leaving family, friends, comfort of knowing where you are, and so on just to be here.

Hey, I was wondering if UTH does drug testing during the first two years of school. I'm not a big stoner; just decided to try it and enjoy it every now and then while I can.

I realize the irresponsible nature of my question, but please refrain from lecturing me. I am aware that being a doctor that smokes pot is inadvisable.

Thanks for your help. As a lurker, I've really appreciated all the (non-illegal drug related) information you've shared. It made my decision to come to UTH a simple one.

I believe part of what you sign/agree to is random drug testing.

I cannot recall being drug tested here.

I have an URGENT question! If you're applying for UT housing and you need to guarantee yourself a spot there, what is the best month to indicate for move-in? Would July be too late for a 1-bedroom?

If you want to guarantee yourself a spot before school starts, it is generally safer to apply for an earlier move in date. However, don't go crazy and put in an april or may move in date, because you might actually get an apt that early and then you'll be stuck with months worth of wasted rent, if you don't actually plan on moving in that early.

Maybe I was just unlucky, but there were several things wrong with the unit I got. It was bad enough that we were able to break out of the lease.

Your best bet, if you want to save on rent, is applying for a 2 bedroom, and getting a roommate later on. Its slightly more than a 2 bedroom at old housing, but cheaper than a 1 bedroom anywhere and the apts are in much better condition.

Thank you for your interest in UT Houston. Unfortunately, our last interview day was January 6th. We recommend reapplying this summer for Entry Year 2013.
