Maybe I was just unlucky, but there were several things wrong with the unit I got. It was bad enough that we were able to break out of the lease.

Your best bet, if you want to save on rent, is applying for a 2 bedroom, and getting a roommate later on. Its slightly more than a 2 bedroom at old housing, but cheaper than a 1 bedroom anywhere and the apts are in much better condition.

I applied for a one bedroom at the old place. Hope your case is isolated.

Not to be a nerd, but I'm on vacation with nothing to do in August. Can any UTH student provide resources/information/etc about first year curriculum so I can study from it? I want to start learning and don't wants my brain turning to soup during the next 8 months...

Please do not do that.

What's wrong with it? I have 0 responsibilities for 8 months and want to do something productive.

enjoy your time off. Do something fun or productive that isn't studying, you'll probably be doing more than enough studying once you start school.

It's just not an effective way to prepare for medical school. You could study all summer and be ahead of the game for the first two weeks of school. You could get burnt out in September and wonder why the heck you spent all that time studying over the summer when you could have been doing fun things. You're going to be studying/taking exams etc for the rest of your life (basic sciences, step 1, step 2, step 3, licensing exams etc.), so enjoy your time off while you can.

A better way to prepare: get everything in order for next year, including your apartment, your transportation plan to-and-from school, your FAFSA, maybe practice a bunch of easy, healthy recipes to use during school. Form a workout plan and get in the habit of doing that.

I understand you're excited to start school, and I remember how frustrating it was to want to start everything NOW, but from those of us who have been there- most will say it's 100% in your best interest not to try to study before medical school.

Agree with the above. You tend to underestimate the awesomeness of having no responsibilities when school seems so far away and you're excited to start, but the excitement will wear off... quickly. Then you will realize that you won't have a time like this anytime in the foreseeable future, that is unless you choose to do nothing during the summer after your first year.
If you still feel inclined to study, first semester classes are anatomy, biochemistry, histology and embryology. Most consider anatomy or biochem the most difficult followed by embryo and histology being the easiest. Best case scenario, you will honor everything without having to study during the semester, but most likely you will be just as stressed as the next person who enjoyed his whole year off .

Go to the housing website and print off the waiting list application. Mail it and $50, along with a copy of your acceptance letter when you get it, to the housing office. The details are online: http://ae.uth.tmc.edu/housing/index2.htm

Congratulations!!

Thanks for that link!

I have a question: I live in a suburb of Houston and have very easy access to the toll road that leads straight to the med center. There's actually even a Metro stop about a mile away that takes people to the med center. What is everyone's opinion on commuting to school vs living in the university housing?

How far?

I know of several classmates who commute. It's not a very big deal during the first 2 years, but it can make 3rd or 4th year rotations annoying. Either way, if you're not out like in spring then it shouldn't be too bad.

I have a home in Sugar land as well which is pretty close to the toll road, but I will NEVER want to commute. I've done that through my 2 years of undergraduate life and you miss out on a lot of social aspects of things. I'm definitely staying in the med center (preferably UTH housing).

Yeah I can understand the social aspects being limited.. but then again free room and board plus home cooked meals is also very tempting lol

Can we just print off our acceptance email and send that? I only ask because I know the wait list fills up fast and would prefer to not wait a week or two.

Congratulations to anyone who matched! Enjoy your summer.

And if you didn't-- don't lose heart. I got in here off of the waitlist, and so will a lot of people this cycle.

Atleast stay near school the first year of school. Thats when you want to get to know people and make a new social circle. When everyone else will be hanging out at midnight, you'd be at home excluded. You will only spend about 8 - 10 K for the year, and when you start making money 5 or 6 years from now, that 10K or so extra loan wouldn't mean much when you'd consider your lifetime earnings. Don't do it the first year!

I wouldn't worry TOO much about student housing. Yes its nice, but there are A LOT of other reasonably priced apartment complexes around here. During Welcome Weekend (which you'll hear about soon enough) we'll take you on tours of the other places where students tend to live. Also I know a lot of people from our class found their future roommates at Welcome Weekend too, which could help out on the price.

Abuse the system.

Find a place close to campus and have fun. Then, when you run out of food or decide you're too lazy to cook, go home and eat your family's food. Rinse, wash, repeat.

I'm feeling this system. I'm gone have a long chat about this with my parents tonight. Thanks for the input everyone!

Can anyone please explain the wait list process? Is it ordered or just random? I ranked UTH first and was accepted into my second rank.

Congrats to everyone who got in! Can't wait to meet you all. My undergraduate motivation is now at an all-time low....

I would also like to know

It's my understanding that as spots come available and schools start accepting from their waitlists, if you receive an offer from your #1, you will automatically be withdrawn from the other schools.

This is wrong.

The rank list means nothing after 8AM this morning. You have been withdrawn from all schools that were ranked lower than your match. Now it's all rolling admissions.

Maybe I should refine my question a little. How exactly does the rolling admissions for waitlisted people work? Is there an order to the waitlist (we are ranked), is it random, or do they review each student prior to sending out an admission offer?

I've heard that if you are active about your interest in the school (sending update letters, letter of interests etc) then it will help you move up the waitlist. Just something a former student told me though!

For those wondering about the waitlist, according to the UTHadmissions twitter handle the waitlist is not ranked and everyone that interviewed and was not matched will be placed on the waitlist. Hope that gives some clarity to some people!

Hey guys, does anyone know how generous UT Houston is concerning scholarships? Are they merit based, need based, etc? Are many even available? How are current students going about paying for school, expenses, etc? I'm sure most are loans but do most people get something from the school that doesn't have to be paid back?

To add onto that.. Are merit scholarships (if they are at all offered) only given to people that are pre-matched or are those that matched also given consideration?

There aren't many scholarships. They're not just merit based. They're not just for people who prematched.

Apply for the scholarships and see what happens.

The state already heavily subsidizes our tuition, which is why you'll only pay about a third of what you'd have to pay out of state. You will likely pay all of it from loans.

So anybody know about when we should expect the packet in the mail?

This may be a dumb question, but can anybody explain UTH's relationship with MD Anderson?

I know Baylor used to claim NIH funding from MD Anderson but it seems like UTH does not now even though most of the faculty there are from UTH med. This confuses me.

Second, Do UTH students get preference for rotations at MD Anderson since they are affiliated.

I am comparing schools and I am just curious, I would love to spend a lot of time in this hospital.

Our affiliation with MD Anderson is that it is part of the University of Texas system. Our faculty members often have joint appointments there if that's part of what they do.

The NIH funding thing doesn't have much to do with who provides medical care to patients.

There are several rotations that we can do at MD Anderson. As far as I know, Baylor students do not, or very rarely get to rotate at MD Anderson. It is not too uncommon to see Baylor residents there, though.

I'm still thoroughly confused about the waitlist process. Is there any order, and if so is it the same as the order we were placed in after interviews? Are there certain priorities-- i.e. someone who didn't get accepted anywhere versus people who are already accepted? Are we allowed to know where we are on the waitlist? And if we do get in on the waitlist, are we then forced to accept (like Match day) or are we allowed to choose? Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, none of us really know the answer to any of your questions. The only people who know are those in charge! Well I can answer a couple-
1. You will not be told where you stand on the wait list.
2. If you're accepted at a school you ranked lower on TMDSAS and you get accepted off our wait list, you would then have the choice of which school to go to.

I know the wait must be really tough. Just try to stick it out. If you're accepted elsewhere try to get things in order in case you end up going there, and if not, start readying/adding to your application for the coming season. I know how hard that is to hear, but it's the truth.
