Accepted. OOS interviewed 12/13/11. For those already accepted, have you all started filling out your Admissions Application? Im having trouble uploading a copy of my transcripts where it asks How did you all save your transcripts off of your University's Banner system? May have to request official printed ones and scan it onto a pdf.
When did you find out? Did your online status change before any snail mail came?

I didn't expect to hear anything until March but I was bored this morning and logged into the U of U online portal and noticed there was a section that was added (Application Status). I clicked on it and bam- said I was accepted!! Very pleasant surprise. I don't know how long that was like that though because the last time I logged in was to choose interview dates. I haven't gotten anything in postal mail yet.

Congrats, I interviewed on 12/12 but I'm from Idaho so I presume I won't be hearing back until March but thats exciting for you

Good News: Finally heard back!
Bad News: Not offered an MD/PhD interview.

In case any of you are still in limbo, at least you know that they've finally gotten around to reviewing applications and making interview decisions. 🙂

I interviewed here as well. My interviews went really well IMO. Both of my interviewers were nice and there weren't many out of left field questions. I was, however, a little disappointed on interview day. During the interview, we toured around a couple of buildings where we saw their 1 lecture hall and some labs, but we weren't allowed in the gross anatomy lab. From what I observed through different conversations, I felt that most of the students were in a rush to just graduate and get out of there. I didn't feel they were very happy with the curriculum or in general, as I did with other schools I interviewed at. Being OOS, I wasn't that impressed with the region either- beautiful mountains but not much else to do. Bummer.

They do have some pretty sweet facilities and research going on though. Sorry, I really don't mean to bash at all, I am just really disappointed :/ Any good feedback from current students to disprove my theory would be wonderful.

Thanks!

I wanted to comment on your experience a little. The one lecture hall and labs that you visited are where you will spend your first two years. I am rarely outside of the building that those are in, ever. In fact other than a few open rooms that we use to study we are rarely outside of those rooms.

As was said, the gross anatomy lab is quite a walk from everything else, which is probably the main reason you didn't visit it. It's an anatomy lab, you didn't miss anything, there are better labs there are worse labs. I can tell you however there is not a better gross anatomy professor, period, and I have spent over 8 hours a week in anatomy labs as both a student and an instructor since fall 2007, and count several anatomy professors among my closest friends. The UofU SOM anatomy professor is the best, hands down.

I think that the attitude of the students depends largely on who you talk to, not only within a class but also depending on which class you are talking to. The current curriculum is only in its third year, meaning that the current 3rd years were the guinea pigs. It was not the best of circumstances and their experience and therefore attitude reflects this. Many things were improved for the second years and their attitude generally reflects this. By the time things have come around to my class, many of the kinks in the curriculum seem to be ironed out and from what I have seen and discussed with my classmates we generally like the curriculum and our experience and seem to have great attitudes regarding the school and our experience.

It is also what you make of it. Our class is very close and works together. We have fun together, study together and help each other out. At the end of phase I the instructors were a little surprised at our overall class average and we as students have attributed it to the way that we work together. We did not lose a single student due to grades in phase I.

You will get a great curriculum, with professors who know what they are talking about, are personable, approachable and genuinely care about the students. What you do with it and with your classmates is largely up to you.

Lastly, there is plenty to do here. I don't know what you are looking for that you aren't seeing. There is a plethora of outdoor activities, sporting events, bars, clubs and pretty much anything that you would want to do. This week, of the things that I know that are going on, there is a group going to the Jazz game Saturday night (and basically the same for every Jazz game), a large group going to a club with dueling pianos and people up at Sundance Film Festival. I have seen groups headed out to run and am betting that with the snow there will be a group headed to snowboard since they all bought season passes. There is also a Super bowl party in the works.

Ok so I said more than a little. If anyone wants more information or has other questions feel free to PM me. I am not on here often, but if you PM me I will give you my email address.

Good luck to everyone!!

For the record, I interviewed on that same date as Harmonia and I had a different type of experience - a much brighter one. Thanks for the examples though, those really make the school and city's life shine.Great post.

Interview on the 14th! can you let me know how it goes for you? Any tips are truly welcome.

Im pretty sure you didn't interview on the same date as I. I interviewed on the 13th, not 14th.
But Im glad you had a great interview experience.

WAHUVU, Thank you very much for the additional insight. It is great to hear feedback from current students, which makes all the difference. I am looking forward to attending the University of Utah and I thank you again for taking the time to write about your experiences! 😀

Sorry about that. Glad to know you read my posts though, and that your initial concerns were resolved with a bit of help. Congratulations on your acceptance! 🙂

Any Idaho applicants have an acceptance at this point? If so when did you interview? Thanks

Can anyone that has been denied give a timeframe from time of interview to denial notice? I want to know if there is a possible time frame where I can guess I'm safe until the end of March acceptances. Thanks 🙂

Interview tomorrow. I'm freaking out a little bit.

Good luck! Just relax and be yourself. Make sure that you know your own application forwards and backwards and can talk about everything you put in there.

On another note, MS1's and 2's are all testing tomorrow so you will not be able to attend any classes, and will be a little limited in interaction with the students. If you have anything that you want to know just ask me.

I wouldn't count on anything until towards the end of the first week in April.

No need. Seriously, just BE YOURSELF and let your passion for medicine and for people show. All I did to prepare was go over some research project I did a while ago, which I wasn't even asked about. Know your application well obviously (which you should anyways, considering its just a story of your life and experiences) but other than that RELAX and enjoy it. My interviewers were so nice and really just wanted to get to know me. There were no tricks or "hard" questions. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck 🙂

I interviewed January 18th and nothing yet either way. I haven't heard from any other Idaho residents. Have you?

And when did you apply?

I interviewed Nov 28th and haven't heard a thing yet. I can't really remember when I was complete but I tried to be punctual so I can at least say my app wasn't turned in late.

So, in previous years threads there seemed to be a nice handful of people accepted between December and February. I wonder why not the case this year?

Interesting how quiet this thread is...Interviewed here in January but have not heard anything. Guess they were being honest when they said don't expect anything until March...

I'm confused-you say you haven't heard anything but underneath you say you were accepted. If you were accepted are you in state, out of state or Idaho?

Very quiet! I have been checking this thread and the UofU portal at least 5 times a day. First thing when I wake up. Right before bed. I'm dying to hear more. I interviewed on Oct 28th. I'm in state. A guy I work with interviewed in Nov and got rejected last month. I have also heard of two others that interviewed the same day as me who were rejected. No news is good news at this point I guess.

Anyone know how often the Idaho committee meets to discuss applicants? We are getting down to the end of the cycle for Utah here at least for interviews because they said decisions are mailed out in March for most folks.

I got the same email, made my heart skip a beat even though I knew they don't send email notifications. I guess that means I don't have a rejection already in the mail, but that is all that can be gleaned from it status-wise.

Lol I didn't wanna be the first one to post about getting that same email cuz I've been super neurotic all season every time I get an email I get excited

I don't recall getting one last year and I got rejected so maybe a good sign 😕 I'm sure everyone got it haha

I got the same financial aid email and my interview isn't for a few weeks. I think they just sent it to everyone that interviewed, no matter the status

And when they say March they mean the very end of March. My first year applying I didn't hear anything until about April 5th or 6th and last year my portal changed to accepted on the last day of March.

I know it sucks, I was there twice, but just be patient until the end of the first week of April.

Interviewed on 3-Feb, now playing the waiting game with the rest of us all...

Does anyone have any info on how many applicants were offered spots last year? This would include the 82 seats plus those that turned down for other schools. Just curious.

I was wondering it anyone has any information on Idaho applicants? I can not find any information!!! How many apply? How many interview? And how many are typically accepted in a cycle? Thanks!

I tried to find this information last year, but in general there are close to 150 Idaho applicants per year. I would think most of them apply to both UW and Utah since they are our state institutions per se. I think less would apply to Utah because the secondary is a beast. And of the 8 spots available, I would think that around 12-15 get acceptances because I'm sure very few drop those spots. I would guess at least 2.5 to 3 times as many interview for those 15 spots.

This is all general estimates. Second time applicant here but I'll be dropping my spot if I get accepted 🙂

Whaddaya mean, GoZags?

I was recently accepted to UW and I will be Accepting that seat as it is my #1 choice 🙂 but Utah is definitely a great program and I hope you hear good news!

Congrats man, I know its been a journey for you! Good Luck.

Congratulations on the acceptance to UW, it is a great school. I would encourage you to withdraw your application to Utah. By keeping your application active, if you are accepted they won't be able to accept someone in your place until you decline your seat. This means that another applicant will have to wait longer to know if they are accepted or not. Waiting to find out really sucks.

I wanted to make sure everything went through with UW last week, and I am in the process of withdrawing interviews and decisions from other schools at this point 🙂

Does anyone know if our online status will change if/when we get rejected?

Also, for any current students - People had a lot to say about the mandatory attendance rule that was implemented. The students I talked to during my interview seemed to take it in stride. Is there still any ill will towards administration over this? Just curious.

Depends on who you ask. Even the students that are most frustrated realize that it is outside of their control at some point and just deal with it.

The fact is attendance is mandatory, and if that is a deterrent to you it should be factored in to your decision to attend here.

Based on last year's thread, it might. Some people found out online, others by mail. After being placed on the waitlist, some found out by phone if admitted.

Most rejections did not find out by online portal. I do not believe waitlisters found out this way, though some waitlisters were asked to submit to the background check. Typically the last step led to admission.

The official method is postal mail, but probably 50% of people found out by online portal. Though, some who received letters did not have a change in portal status for a week or so after getting the letter.

In short....who knows...going to be an interesting ride starting March 15. Good luck to you.

Hey all! Out of curiosity does anyone know the lecture time for MS1? I remember at the interview one of the student ambassadors said it was in the morning only but I cant remember the times?

I remember from my interview that class was from 8-12 everyday, and labs and such would be in the afternoon when applicable.

This is correct.

MS1 lecture time is 1-5pm Monday-Friday with anatomy lab 8am-12pm Wednesday.

I remember from my interview that class was from 8-12 everyday, and labs and such would be in the afternoon when applicable.

This is the MS2 schedule and is not correct for incoming students.

Attached a document sent to all classes today from our new dean that may be of interest to those applying.

Good luck!

thats a great info sheet, thanks for sharing. Knowing a few OOS have already been accepted, its good (and a little depressing) to know there are about 250 interviewed OOS competing for about 10 spots. Sure makes you wish they increased the class size now instead of later.

Anyone else excited that March is finally here! Bring on the good news baby!

I'm excited for you guys! Best of luck to all. :luck:

Once more people get acceptances, we can start our class thread 🙂
