anyone have any idea how big the institutional scholarships and loans are and approximately how many people get them?

So yesterday I received a waitlisted letter in the mail, but today I received the Background check email from AAMC. Did any one else who was waitlisted receive the background check email? (last year I was waitlisted at Utah but never received it, but I also don't want to read too much into it)😕

Well, almost 7 months after my interview I finally found out today that I was rejected. Letter was postmarked April 2nd (traffic rules violation, right?).

No, but that sounds like good news to me... have you checked your status update? are you still waiting to here anywhere else?

updated "list" sorry I wasn't as detail oriented as cougardriver.... also, if I missed someone let me know

Hey all. So I am really interested in what has been said about wait list "stats" from previous years. Where exactly is the information coming from that says there were ~20 people placed on the wait list last year? If that is accurate, it makes the other statement made on this thread that 15 people were accepted off of the list last year really promising. Any help here?

Thanks!

all this info comes from talking with people who have applied and gotten accepted in the past. Nothing on the threads, just from my friends who are in the program. Hope that helps. even if it isn't 100% accurate, makes me feel better

anyone know of anyone who has been accepted but plans to go elsewhere? any one accepted who is still waiting to hear from another school? what are people's plans?

No, but that sounds like good news to me... have you checked your status update? are you still waiting to here anywhere else?

There is nothing different on my status update, I'm still waiting to hear back from Medical College of Wisconsin- but I didn't interview there so I assumed I had been rejected.

I would call them. I got a note from them a couple days ago saying that they were still considering some applications for "a few more months."

I have not interviewed there yet either, so you may not be out just yet...

Congratulations to those of you that have been accepted or wait listed. We are just finishing up our first year right now and I can say that you guys have a lot to look forward to. Incredible instructors, integrated curriculum, a close and cohesive class and an administration that rallies around the students.

There are MANY students in my class that were initially wait listed. Hopefully this is comforting to many of you.

If you have any questions at all about the school/curriculum/housing/costs/textbooks, etc. just post them and I'll do my best to answer them or forward them to someone who does...

For all of us waitlisted/accepted, are you guys waiting to hear from anywhere else?

I have an out of state DO acceptance, but I'm really hoping to stay here. I own a home and it isn't going to be easy to sell it, and move to the East coast, but at least I have the option if I don't get off the wait list.

I have a few questions:
Is the U really the only medical school in the United States (MD or DO) that requires daily attendence and actually tracks this?

Do the professors really have an arrogant attitude like obygyn had said earlier?

Does anyone have the match results for the most recent graduating class?

Is the recent graduating class the first one with the new curriculum?

waiting to hear from OHSU, but I want to stay close to home (less $$$)

I have an acceptance to an OOS DO school but I also would love to stay here in Utah. I am currently on the waiting list. It sounds promising from what others are saying but I am still fully gearing up to leave Utah.

I'm really not sure how many other medical schools require attendance to didactic lectures. The U. of Utah is the only school I interviewed at that did. I have a classmate that was accepted to the U. of Rochester who says that they do too. Every medical school that I've heard of, however requires attendance to small group discussion/clinical rotations/anatomy dissections, etc.

The professors I have had so far do NOT have an arrogant attitude. Most would give you the shirt off their back if you asked. I've never met a group of educators more committed to the success and well being of their students. Most will drop everything to answer questions and clarify difficult concepts. I'm not saying that obygyn is wrong and that professors many years ago weren't arrogant, but simply that this is NOT the case now.

From what I understand, accepted students will be provided a copy of the Match list during the second look meeting. The Admissions office may be able to provide it sooner. I helped at the Match Day celebration, watched students open their letters and can tell you that this year's class did extremely well. We had 4 students match into dermatology, 2 students match into radiation-oncology and most into their top 3 choices. Everyone seemed very pleased.

The graduating class represents the last year of the old curriculum.

if anyone is taken off the wait list, will you let the rest of us know? I am sure I am not the only one who would like to know if/when movement happens.... just a thought, let me know if you agree, disagree or have a better suggestion.

Accepted off the waitlist today via snail mail, in state, no portal update.😍

Millhouse! That's so sick, congrats! I'd be willing to bet you were the top dog on the waitlist 😉
Happy for you!

Congrats Milhouse! I'm glad there is already some movement. Anyone know how long the accepted students had to decide to accept their spot or not?

I am pretty sure they have two weeks from recieving their acceptance letter.

I have a few questions:

Honestly, its not really that big of a deal. The current 2nd and 3rd years had it instituted in the middle of the year so it was a more drastic change. For the 1st years, its a little obnoxious at times but we knew it was going to be there and it really is not as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

Do the professors really have an arrogant attitude like obygyn had said earlier?

No, they do not. I have never dealt with a better group of professors. As with any large group of professors you are going to get lots of personalities but by far most of them are approachable, fun and really want to see you succeed. Right now there is a weekly limerick challenge where they post a limerick related to the weeks assigned material and pick a winner from all of the correct submissions. There are two possible prizes, a gift card or one of the unit directors voice for your voicemail message. The most desired is by far the voicemail message. That wouldn't be the case if the professors were obnoxious and arrogant.

In my opinion Obwangynobee is an idiot. What reason does he have to get on here and post other than to be negative. There are at least two 1st years who are reasonably active in this thread, who have tried to answer questions and help you guys out, and then there are the people like him who get their feelings hurt and get bent out of shape and post once or twice railing against how terrible the U is. Trust the people who post more than once. If you don't believe me, send me a PM, I will send you my email address and phone number and arrange for you to meet with me and as many other students as you want. I will have you come into class and meet the professors.

Does anyone have the match results for the most recent graduating class?

Can't help you there

Is the recent graduating class the first one with the new curriculum?

No, next years class, the current third years, will be the first to have gone through the new curriculum

I'm a 3rd year (1st class with new curriculum) and have a slightly more "neutral" opinion than the 1st years that replied.

1. I doubt the U is the only medical school in the US that requires daily attendance and tracks it. But they're probably the most neurotic about it.. Some 2nd years left after attendance was taken one day and so now administrators have been coming back in the middle of class to take attendance a second time. Apparently it's a really big deal.

I agree that this is not a deal-breaker for everyone, but 1st years can't understand the magnitude of required attendance because they are not studying for step 1. It's a different story in your 2nd year and there is little time to study for the most important test of your life (unless you're 100% committed to family, peds, psych, etc. and you don't care where you do your training).

2. I agree that the professors, for the most part, do not have an arrogant attitude. Don't know what obygyn said, but he was probably referring to the administrators, who definitely have an arrogant attitude, and have been that way for a long time. Bjorkman, the previous dean, was recently replaced by Vivian Lee who seems to be a lot more sincere and appears to be a genuine student advocate. Looks like we may have passed the nadir and might be on our way up.

3. No one has the complete match results yet, but they will be released sometime soon. 5 students of about 100 didn't match, 4 of those matched in the SOAP (the new scramble). 1 student is applying again this year. I agree that most of the students did well.

4. As mentioned, current graduating class is last of the "old" curriculum.

I was accepted march 28th -- I received the letter in the mail on April 5th! I'm from NJ.

Accepted via snail mail today, and online status was already updated (I hadn't been checking it so I don't know when it updated). I was waitlisted via snail mail a week or 2 back. I am an Idaho resident. Still undecided as to whether I'm going to go here or to one of my other options.

Congrats! I'm hoping I get in off the wait list. ID resident also, Utah is my last hope this year.
I wish I knew more about the wait list stats for ID residents.

Any in-staters out there planning on declining their acceptance?

Hello Friends and Enemies.

So I am OOS and got wait listed recently. Anyhways this is a very silly question but I see you all talking about an online portal where your status is updated. Um, how do I access this? I sort of feel like my mom asking a technical question.

ope i guess it's just the application site. Nothing exciting going on there

I know this isn't the right place for this, but i'm a Utah resident and figure mostly Utahns will read and hopefully advise on this. I just yesterday 4/12/12 recieved an email from Jefferson saying I didnt get an interview and have been rejected. I finished my secondaries before the end of August, but I'm still waiting for about five schools to still give me a decision. I know they are all rejections since I didn't interview, but that just doesn't seem right to keep someone waiting so long. Any advice or suggestions. I finally got my letter from the U sent long after the 3/31/12...

Background check email this morning... I'm in-state and was wait listed on April 3rd...

congrats!... good to know there is some movement. Are you the third person off the waitlist?

I'm not sure. I also have waitlist positions at U of Colorado and George Washington, but I don't think either of those schools have movement until May 15th. I am hoping that means the email is good news from the U!

What does the Background Check email say in it? Is it from the U or from AMCAS? I got an email regarding background checks in September.

The email was titled, "AAMC Background Check Consent Request"

It stated in a caps that my immediate attention was requested and stated the following:

"You have received this email because you have been *waitlisted *or *conditionally accepted by one or more of the medical schools participating in the AAMC-facilitated program for performing criminal background checks on conditionally accepted applicants and waiting list applicants."

They game me a user code and requested that I make an account to fill it in.

Hope this helps!

So I was waitlisted but never received a background check e-mail... is that weird?

I haven't recieved a background check e-mail either and I am waitisted. I don't think most of the waitlisted people got background check e-mails.

I was accepted via snail mail 5 minutes ago!! I truly cannot believe it... 😀 In response to the previous post about background check emails, it would appear that you only receive one if you are being accepted off of the wait list.

We should all look at this as good news. It is only mid April and we are seeing movement! Come May 15th, we should see a lot more. I am pulling for everyone still waiting!

Congrats MussMan! It does indeed appear that the background check e-mail means you are getting off the waitlist.
