How serious is this school about committee letters? My school offered a committee letter at a steep price: $300 + $50/school. I would have had to pay $1,300 just for a letter that would have been a summary of my other letters, so I decided not to get it.

Most of the schools I have been applying to have granted me exceptions to this, except for Vermont. I called and told them about the high cost and they still said my other letters won't matter since my school offers the committee letter.

I am really interested in this school and am upset because they can't make an exception for this case, even though the committee letter won't add any extra information! I asked the lady if it is even worth for me to go ahead with the secondary, and she said "I guess not".

I am still tempted to send in the secondary and am hoping they eventually understand my situation. Does anybody have advice for me on this? Thanks for your responses ahead of time.

Well, if they told you they wont accept individual letters then you shouldn't send them individual letters. You just need to decide whether or not it is worth it to spend $350 + secondary fee on this school. For me, this would be an easy choice - $350 would not prevent me from having the opportunity to attend UV. Hope this helps.

No reason not to give it a shot, if you can afford the secondary fee. And if you don't mind my asking, why didn't you just tell your school you were applying to one or two programs and pay them $350? (Is it Rutgers, btw? I seem to remember a pre-Allo thread about some similar ridiculousness a while back.)

Yea it is Rutgers Newark (New Brunswick has no fee though). And at the time I had no idea how the system worked, so I didn't know that I could tell them I'm only doing 1 school.

But it's too late for me to get the committee letter though. So now I either apply with the 5 letters I have, pay the secondary fee, and hope they make an exception. Or I can just forget about it. I can't decide. 🙁

The only thing you have to lose is the secondary fee, so I don't see why not.

True, but I hate the idea of wasting money for something they won't even consider. I guess I'll have to think about it. Maybe I can e-mail the head of admissions and ask her about my situation. Thanks for your help though.

I am really sorry to hear about this. It is such a shame that your school is trying to profit so much out of this process. Thinking back, all my school asked for was a mere $65 per application cycle.

Tell me about it. It's so corrupt. And it's sad that most students go along with it because they don't know how ADCOMs will feel. Apparently the pre-health office doesn't get funding and so they charge students these outrageous fees. They don't even need to offer the letter because all they do is summarize your professor's letters and comment on your transcript and make it into one letter. No added information.

Omg I had never heard of anything like this before. My school didn't charge me anything. My pre-med advisor took forever to compile all the letters but hey it was free. I'm sorry to hear this. I hope everything works out for you at UVM!

damn that sucks. my school does it for free and they make sure to send it out all out by july 4th latest lol

How would UVM know if your school offers a committee letter or not? I am 95% sure my school does not, since none of my advisers or fellow pre-meds ever talked about it, but if they do and I don't know about it... that sucks.

Interview Invite for Oct. 6 this morning! I am OOS from Utah.

hm...does anyone know if they let you reschedule twice? I feel like I read somewhere that they only let you do it once, but I might be confusing them with another school...

What percent of interviewees get accepted here? I'm OOS and just trying to gauge where I stand.

Got an interview invite via email this morning. My secondary was complete July 25. OOS, 3.7 cGPA, 34Q MCAT.

According to US News, 33% of total interviewees received acceptances. Of OOS interviewees, 31% were accepted.

Aw man 31%? That doesn't look too good, I was hoping for like 51% lol

Hey all,

I am a first year here at UVM, and if anyone has any questions that they want to ask about the interview process, cirriculum, moving to VT or anything please feel free to message me. Good luck to everyone and hang in there. This whole process is just a lot of waiting.

Well, I bet you could break the odds down a bit to achieve close to 51%.

From those interviewed September-November: 51% are accepted.
From those interviewed December-February: 30% are accepted.
From those interviewed February-April: 23% are accepted.

😉

Interview invite today for September 29th! IS, 3.6, 31 MCAT

I interviewed last year (December). I fell in love with the school (UVM is my top school). I hope this year is the year!

Best of luck to you all. Remember to send in those letters of interest and make those phone calls.

Letters of interest and phone calls? I thought they didn't take any of that extra stuff here? Says so on their website.

I'm gonna deluge them with documented enthusiasm if that isn't the case! 🙂

How's vermont doing? I heard hurricane Irene basically flooded the entire state.

Burlington is just fine, it's business as usual here - it was the southern/eastern parts of the state that were particularly hard-hit. Some towns are still completely cut off, every road washed out... it's pretty serious.

It's so nice that UVM has student hosts so we don't have to get a hotel. This process is so expensive- I've started thinking about tanks of gas and groceries in terms of "half a secondary" or "an eighth of a plane ticket to Boston."

hahaha. i laughed out loud when reading this in a room by myself. It's so true.

Finally pooled. That took a while, but at least it's something.

You should not do that. A deluge will cause the admissions office to dislike you. Updates/Letters of interest/Phone calls every 2-3 weeks is perfectly fine. They will love and respect you for that. 🙂

I don't remember getting a "complete" e-mail, but I submitted the secondary on July 6th.

Thank you. I did not get a complete email either, I actually did wanted to know when you submitted the secondary. I was curious whether they small pool out of order (of dates of submission) and it does seem like they do.

I submitted the secondary on 7/28 and I have still not been pooled. Should I call them? what is the deal?

i wouldn't call. they will come to you in due course... hurts to hear it, but it's the truth. "the waiting is the hardest part"

Interview Invite for Oct. 6 this morning! I am OOS from Utah.

What undergrad institution if you don't mind me asking? I myself am from Utah as well. Also put me down for anxiously awaiting to be pooled. Complete 8/7. Definitely one of my top choices.

I was complete mid July and still haven't been pooled. Do you think it is worth it to call or email and ask about it?

I am in state and was complete 7/4 and still have not been pooled. My stats are good enough for in-state (3.8/30) so I wouldn't be too worried. Granted, I just got my in state verified 2 weeks ago, but it is still pretty early-Best i can tell you is to not over think it. I thought about emailing but I'm not really sure how they feel about emails inquiring status changes. Give it some time.

Pooled today. submitted secondary on 7/28.

Is it bad to be pooled? Better not to be pooled?

Depends on if you want to interview there... If you want to interview, then you need to be in the potential interview pool.

If you don't want to interview, then it makes no difference.

Basically, this is a sarcastic answer because the answer is thoroughly covered in this thread

I go to the University of Utah.

That's because you were expecting a "pooled" email. They don't send emails. It's only on your online status check page

I'm a bit OCD and I check every status every day (of all the schools I applied to) and I never saw my vermont one change to 'pooled' or anything. maybe i missed it though, you never know.

POOOOOOOOOOLED!

i know it doesn't really mean too much but you need to be excited about the small victories.

Hello everyone,

I just got an e-mail to complete the secondary online, but when I log in no secondary is available. Is this normal? Thanks!
