Hey everyone, hopefully the emails were sent out by mistake, but it's also possible that the form letters were accidentally not updated for this application cycle. I'm currently on the waitlist and there is a similar error in the WL status message on the OAC. Specifically the letter says that the school will be interviewing candidates through April 2011 and that admission may be granted until the first day of classes in August 2011. I've copied the excerpt verbatim below:

At a recent meeting of the Committee on Admissions your complete application was carefully reviewed. We are pleased to inform you that your name has been placed on the Out-of-Area waitlist of qualified/alternate candidates. We will complete our interview and review process by the end of April 2011. Because we utilize a rolling admissions process, you may be accepted from the waitlist at any time during the admissions season. In the event that you are offered an acceptance you will be notified via email.

Our waitlist season is open until the first day of orientation in August 2011.

It seems like the admissions season is such a busy time for the office that a few small things might slip through the cracks. With that said I still hope for those who received the note this week that it was due to a glitch in the system, but if not there is still plenty of time left before this cycle comes to a close, and you shouldn't let it discourage you.

Edit: Although it certainly is strange that the letter sent this past week mentions that the application season has come to a close. That's a bit different than simply not updating the 'year' field.

I am still getting the "pooled" message and my file says updated 12/30. Honestly, I don't really care if I hear back from them. I like the school, but because they interview 1000's of people for so few spots, I can't really get my hopes up about them. 🙄

Oh crap, I have the same message. 🙁

Has anyone called in to see if this was an error or intended?

I can understand people's confusion about the portal update.

It will be difficult to get answers before Tuesday as the university is closed until then for the holiday.

Ah well, it doesn't make sense to stress out about it in the meantime. Do they usually mass reject people at around this time?

Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone. :xf:

Did anyone with a "small pooled" message get a rejection status, or are they all from folks who had the "application complete, 6-8 weeks" message before it changed?

I think most had the "application complete, 6-8 weeks" message, while the small pooled people are safe.

Yes, I think that's what it was. I was small pooled and still am. Fingers crossed for y'all. :xf:

Okay, so I checked the portal this morning and I am back to "under preliminary review". Guess it was a glitch? Hope everyone else was un-rejected as well! ;-)

Just to let everyone know I received the rejection status last year in December and then I ended up getting an interview invite in Feb.! So don't give up hope yet!

un-rejected as well.

also: how long has everyone been under preliminary review? it has been about 11 weeks for me.

About the same. I sent in everything by mid-October and was complete during early November.

same! I was complete in early november. a couple weeks ago they told me it would be a couple more weeks until i hear something.

Does anyone know when the next round of acceptances for the OOS candidate list will be?

Does everyone initially get pooled, or are there some people who are rejected before being pooled? If so, does anyone know the percentage of people pooled, and the percentage of these pooled people who get IIs. Thanks.

Does anybody know the interview format of this school? I tried searching but couldn't find anything.

(long description ahead)

It is between 30 mins to 1 hr. It is a casual 1 on 1 meeting. Normally you are interviewed by a practicing physician (EM doc most likely) or by a Ph.D professor (rare). When you arrive in the morning of your interview, you will be given the name of your interviewer. Feel free to search your interviewer on UVM's website using your smart phone.

It is open record (AMCAS). The interviewer will have either just gotten your record or read it 1-3 hours before the meeting. If they had time, they will have skim read your personal statement, and read your "most important" experiences listed on your AMCAS.

The interviewer will not have read your letters of recommendation. If you sent in letters of update or a CV they most likely will not have seen them.

All the MD applicants will be split into 2 interview groups for timing of the interview. While one group is interviewing the other group will go on a tour of the medical school/hospital. The admissions staff and interviewers are very friendly.

With that said, I will give you a bit of advice when trying to "read" your EM doc interviewer. EM docs have a great poker face, and they are extremely good at reading you. Please remember that these are docs who routinely deal with the less desirable members of the population. They know bullsh*t when they see it.

Be yourself, tell the truth, do not sell yourself - instead speak your passion, and remember to hold your end of the conversation.

I don't know how rare it is to have a PhD professor as an interviewer; I had one and she was really great. She was super knowledgeable about the VIC, and just plain nice. My interview experience was extremely relaxed and positive.

EM physicians are not over-represented among interviewers, as I understand it.

Like you, I do not have exact numbers. I can only speak from experience. I interviewed at UVM twice (December and September) and both times I had a EM doc as my interviewer (different ones, and both EM docs were at both interviews). All the other applicants that I got to know during the day also had EM docs (1-2). Both times the list of interviewers contained 1 Ph.D researcher. I remember the list of interviewers having atleast 5-6 different names of interviewers.

(to add a note)

UVM will try to match you up with an interviewer that shares some qualities with your AMCAS application (interests, background, etc). It was a fun experience. I am so happy to be accepted and headed to Burlington for August. I hope to see you around campus Gravitywave - best of luck.

Hi guys,

Sorry if this question was already asked..but about how many applicants are interviewed and how many of these are accepted?

I know people have sent LOI and post-interview updates, but do they take pre-interview updates? And how do we send them (guessing by email)? Thanks. 🙂

Big day tomorrow! 🙂 It's a long shot (I'm OOS) but hoping for some good news in the coming few days.

Hey guys! I received an interview invite today! How exciting 😀 does anyone know or can estimate the chances of an OOS getting accepted interviwing this time in the season? Thanks! Good luck to all!

So the people discussed at today's meeting can hear back as early as tomorrow/Thursday/Friday, right?

Congrats! Now go rock that interview! 🙂

If I may ask, when were you complete by?

As inform...II around 1/7 for 1/19...OOS...complete (updated MCAT) around 10/15...had updated recently with fall GPA and continuing expression of interest...asking to stay w/student host

I was told Friday is probably the earliest, or else early next week.

FYI...
If you can believe the UVM SDN interview feedback, UVM tends to place OOS applicants who interview immediately (seemingly automatically) on their WL, which strikes some as odd since they matriculate 75% OOS (very small IS population to populate the SOM). Amazingly, their published enrolled MCAT's have remained spot on 30 : 10-10-10 for 3 straight years.

Aw man, they told you this recently? I was hoping I wouldn't have to put a deposit down elsewhere if I had something in hand from here. UVM is tough to pass up!

Yes, they told me this today.

Thanks Monocles!! 🙂 not sure when I was complete. I submitted the app mid October so I was probably complete by the ends of the month.

Just wanted to let you all know that my status has changed to post-interview review complete, etc, etc, etc. I interviewed in December.
