From the students I talked with during my interview, it depends on the class. They said some classes meet 8-12, and you're done for the day. Some classes meet 12-4, mornings free. Some are more or less all day. Maybe one of the current students who has actually had class can provide a better answer. Also, you will have plenty of opportunities to gather info like this during your visit.
 
So I have been to Vermont many many times and each winter I am horrified by how cold it gets. Can a current student tell me how they handle walking to and from class in the winter?
 
annabanana, I am premed at UVM and the on-campus transportation is very good. As a commuter I have two lot choices - one is about a 10 minute walk to the medical campus, and the other is a 20 minute walk but has a shuttle that runs all day. That's the option I take on those really cold days. If you plan on living in Burlington you can ride the public bus for free with your UVM id, and then use the shuttle on campus. The medical college buildings are close together, so once you know your way around it's easy to building hop and minimize the exposure.

I think it's worse in other parts of the state (northeast kingdom = brrrr!). I've been here for 25 years, and although I'm definitely headed for warmer parts in my retirement years, it's not that bad. 🙂 Nothing that a good jacket, hat and scarf can't handle.

Yeah, I have to agree with crs (I'm premed here too!), its nothing a good jacket can't handle, and definitely not as bad as other parts of the state. What really can bite is the wind, but a hat and scarf and its no problem. Wool is the best. And they've got a great bus system, so on the coldest days the most you'll have to walk is like 5-ish minutes to the bus stop unless you get really unlucky with housing.
 
well what can i say.. i was those few people that never got a status change.. according to the office ( i just called), that means we won't be reviewed till the next meeting in April 17...
 
Help! Just received a ticket for having my car registration out of date (a civil violation, not a moving violation) ... I remember that the supplemental application said that if you got a violation during the time you were applying you had to report it, but I can't remember if it was just moving violations, or if this would be included in this??? Afraid to report it if I don't have to (cause it was dumb of me not to get it renewed on time), but especially afraid to not report it if I'm supposed to... Leaning towards reporting it to them.... thoughts? comments? anyone who has the exact phrasing of what you have to report?

Here's the UVM secondary instructions for reporting any adverse judgments. Maybe you can take the option to do a CBC on yourself via Certiphi (the same service that med schools use) and see how your record looks. I think it's better to be forthcoming than not, and if you do decide to disclose this-- be humble, say you've made a mistake, and be gracious. Best of luck!

I just got a call from the UVM main number, but no message was left. Haven't heard anything about an interview at all, but I'm in class right now and can't call back - any idea why they might be calling? Do they call for interview invites?

Not yet. In the facebook page it said that they send them out in mid April.

I guess this is geared toward UVM COM students -

I'm currently working and saving up for a new MacBook pro (I'm an Apple fan), and as most people know, they are pretty pricey. My question is would it be redundant to buy a MacBook pro and then have UVM hand me their tablet pc? Is there a way to opt out of receiving a computer from UVM if we do not want one/already have one? Will this reflect on our tuition? And is the UVM campus Apple friendly - are the apps, software, and websites all compatible with OS X? Thanks so much!

You need to have the school tablet because we use it to take out exams. I have a Mac at home, but I rarely use it. I only use it when I need to look for old documents or make a file in adobe illustrator/photoshop. I would say you can get by just fine with the tablet unless you use special programs only available on a Mac. Hope this helps!
 
Hi Heme,

Thanks so much! I feel like the OS X user interface is sooo much more friendly than Windows. But I don't think an easy user interface justifies the cost of a Mac I guess.
 
Anybody know when UVM typically starts classes/has orientation? I got the impression it was early August, but hadn't heard anything concrete.
 
Withdrew my acceptance today. It was a tough choice. I really loved UVM, but have deiided stay closer to my family.

I wonder though how many acceptances they've offered so far and it would change the situation for those on WL at all..... Also wondering about how they will select people off the WL if there no rating of the waitlisters🙄

does anybody know how easy it is to get instate residency for vermont after attending there? as in, can i attend vermont med, get vermont residency after 2 years, and then pay instate tuition? i wonder this cuz i just heard people basically get NY residency after 1 year of med school.

It's impossible to do at Vermont.
 
so if oos tuition is approx 51,000$, and including total cost of living/ other expenses is about 70K a year, how do people afford to pay back nearly 300K in loans!!

I have no idea how this works. Can any OOS student at UVM explain how there loans are structured? also if tuition is at all lowered?

The short answer is no. And there is no loophole that I'm aware of.

All 4 years will be OOS tuition.

I'm a first year OOS student at UVM. I have stafford unsubsidized and subsidized loans (although this is changing) and graduate plus loans totaling around $51,555. I also just finished paying off my private high school two years ago. I have loans from my undergrad and my postbac premed program. I had some money saved up from last year for rent and living expenses and my parents are helping out with what they can (i.e. car insurance, utilities, etc.). I will probably have to take out close to $70,000 per year once I use up my savings.

I know that this probably isn't what you want to hear, but I will probably graduate with upwards of $400,000 in loans and I wouldn't be surprised if I hit the half a million dollar mark. To be perfectly honest, I'm just not that worried about it! As long as I go on to finish medical school, I will be able to pay it all back. I hope to get a job working with an under served population and to apply for loan forgiveness. Either way I will most likely be paying my loans back for 30 years. I just feel so fortunate to be at UVM and to be fulfilling my dream of becoming a physician. I completely understand why some students can't afford to take out as many loans as me. I know that it would be different of I had a spouse or children. I am fortunate enough to have a family that will keep food on my table and a roof over my head, so I just honestly don't worry about the loans.

I know that your situation could be VERY different than mine and other people can post about their experiences, but I wouldn't let having $250,000 versus $300,000 be the determining factor in where you spend the next four years.
 
dang financial aid out and i got no grants 🙁 all loans. anybody know if theres ever any luck with negotiating for grants?

I interviewed a few weeks ago and the admissions ppl said that everyone waiting to hear back still will be reviewed at the next meeting on 16th.

Also that interviews were to be finished during the first week of April.

What about people on the WL? Does the committee look at the waitlisted applicants again during the review?
 
From my understanding of how people are pulled off of the waitlist, it is a decision made by the director herself, not the committee. That's how it was for me at least.

Thank you for your reply Dr. Marty. Would you happen to know how often she looks at the WL or what is the basis for selecting the applicants? It is just so uncertain how it all works if there's no rating of the candidates...😕

the only thing I remember the admissions staff saying about the WL is that ppl get accepted off of it on a 'rolling basis' and could be on it for any length of time, hours to months

nothing very specific or as to how often it is reviewed

where are you guys seeing your financial aid offers? I have checked my physical mail, recently activated UVM email, regular email, and online applicant center page and am not seeing anything. My fin aid offer may not be processed yet, but I just wanted to make sure I haven't missed anything.
