Has anyone that has been placed on hold received an interview invite recently? Or any sort of status change?

I am envisioning my application being on indefinite hold for re-review among the increasingly large stack of apps at GWU's admissions office.

It appears we are on the same page at most schools... I feel your pain.

I got an interview invite today in Nov. I was not expecting it since I am a Canadian and have a really AVERAGE application which makes me wonder why will they call me. How many people do get called for an interview and out of those how many are accepted?
Also, I live in Toronto and the interview is scheduled to be in the morning at 9:15AM. Although I plan to go and stay there in a hotel or something the night before (still have to check where, so if anyone knows any place thats decent and cheap, please suggest), but I am just a little worried about getting there that early in the morning will be a tough job as I have never been there before. I was thinking of rescheduling it to the afternoon sometime on the same day or some other day? Will that be a good idea or should I stick to what I have? Will rescheduling be safe or no?

I've been put on hold as well 🙁

Everyone has to be there at 9:15am for the Welcome/Introductions/Info Sessions/Tour. I believe all one on one interviews start after lunch. I think its important that you are there by 9:15am. Pick a hotel that is within walking distance of a metro stop. That way you can easily take it to the med school as there is a stop literally right next to the building you need to be at that morning. You'll be fine, just give yourself plenty of time.

Oh so you mean everyone interviewing the same day will have to be there at 9:15? The email says the interviews run between 9:15AM - 3PM, so I was thinking I could delay it to some time in the afternoon so I don't have to be there at 9:15 AM. Can anyone enlighten me on that since I still have to reply to the email to confirm?

every interview day has the same schedule, you can't jump in at a later time and I think asking if you can would be a bad idea.. like the above poster said just find a hotel nearby. i stayed at the double tree, it was about a 2 min walk, and a really easy cab ride from the airport. nbd

Awesome that helps and definitely clears up the confusion!

Hey,

I was complete 8/3 and have had the status: "Your file is now complete. At this point we have received all the necessary credentials including your secondary application and your letters of recommendation in order for your application to be reviewed. While the committee does its best to review applications in a timely manner, please be aware that in order to do a thorough review of your file it may be several weeks until you hear from us again. We greatly appreciate your patience during the application process." ever since. Is anybody else in this same boat? I'm nervous they forgot about me or something! Any opinions on whether this is good or bad??

Thanks! 🙂

I've had the same message since 8/15, and am also curious.

I interviewed here recently! I LOVE the school, love DC!! Not too happy about the financial aid situation, esp bc i am planning on an avenue that will not be quite as lucrative as others. Having thousand and thousands of dollars of debt will be unfortunate in that regard. But def one of my top choices!! The interview day was relaxed. The student interview was a bit more structured but maybe doesnt count as much (I'm hoping so!) and the faculty interview was just kinda (imo) to make sure you dont have 5 heads at this point. Or really even 2.

I had that same status since 8/10 and just recently got an II, so don't give up hope! They get so many applications that maybe it's just taking them a bit longer to decide one way or the other. Good luck!

Who remembers the woman's name who actually presented to us and gave the tour on interview day?

pretty sure a diff adcom member does it depending on the day. we had kiley

So i meant to bring this up last week but...

Did any other interviewees receive an email with "Thank You for Interviewing at GWU SMHS" in the subject line? I thought it was weird because they sent me that message on September 18th, but my interview was in late August! I figure it's probably something they send to everyone, but part of me wants to believe it means I'm on some sort of "high priority" list haha 🙂

EDIT: Also, here's what my post-interview status says:

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and interview with us! The Committee on Admissions carefully and judiciously reviews files and as such we humbly appreciate your patience during this process and will be in contact with you once a decision is made.

Is everyone's the same?

I booked the The George Washington University Inn

That is pretty close to the school too? - at least looked like on Google maps

I got this email immediately following my interview. They were transitioning some people into the admissions office so maybe it was simply an issue with catching up with a predecessor's work.

Got it too, a couple of weeks after interview.

Hello all,

When writing update letters, what is the standard heading format that I should be using. Is it enough to include my full name and AAMC ID number? Thanks.

I just included my name and aamc Id. And I made it short and to the point. Got an email a minute later asking me for my update.

So you mean that you wrote an initial email asking for permission to send an update letter to the committee?

I am just trying to stay in the loop here. Complete 9/17. No news yet, but hopeful.

Is there a student-host program here for interviews possibly, or should we just find a hotel close to campus?

Email the admissions office about setting you up with a student host. That's what I did and it was a great experience. My host took me exactly where I needed to be in the morning. Also, staying with a host is a great way to get a more personal, unfiltered look at the school you are visiting.

Yeah Im excited as it is my first interview, and at such a great school.
I will definitely give them a call in the morning. 🙂

Sent an "in the area" letter for the end of October but it doesn't look like they're gonna budge on my re-review status. I was reminded that they interview through March, but that this would be added to my file.

If I took a moment during my interview to ask about the LCME probation & what they've done since then, would that be showing that I am paying attention...or would it be interview suicide?

I was emailed an interview invitation today!

Tuesday November 20th, at 9:15a!

Anyone else interviewing that day want to get together for drinks and check out the town?

Hard to say...I too struggled with this question, and ultimately decided not to bring it up because the school's probationary status seems largely in the past now. Check out this article about it:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/03/AR2010020303788.html

Near the end of the article, you can read some of the specific measures taken by GWU to escape probationary status. Plus, by the time we'd matriculate here, the original probation will be 5 years old, and the school will have been out of probation for 3 years. And looking at GWU's match list, MS4s seem to do just fine matching (at least, they don't seem to encounter obvious difficulty). These things were sufficient to allay my concerns and forgo asking about them during the interview. I would have been more inclined to ask about them had I been applying in 2009 or 2010.

Also, I don't think it would be "interview suicide" to ask if you did so in a non-accusatory way.

Forgot about this whole probation fiasco. Looks like the problems listed in the article weren't too concerning from a med student point of view anyway. Paper evaluations, not enough lounge space and higher tuition than most schools is something that I could certainly live with. But I'm glad these problems have been fixed.

Precisely my thoughts. Furthermore, when I interviewed, lounge space definitely did not seem to be an issue, and the average debt has actually decreased in the last year or two, which is surprising given the tendency for tuition to increase every year at most institutions. This indicates that they have taken real steps to reduce costs to students, though weather you consider average debt reduction from $200,000 to $190,000 to be significant is a different matter altogether. 🙂

II ... All my interviews are end of oct beginning of nov. I technically have to go to all until I get an acceptance... Man it's so expensive, even if some are MD PhD which means they pay. Don't get me wrong GW is a top choice I just wish I could start declining some before I go super broke lol! On the bright side I have 6 interviews 😎

Congrats with interviews guys. Good luck! :luck:

I will be interviewing Tuesday November 20th. I will arrive in DC, Monday November 19th at around 5:00p. If anyone wants to tour the school/city, or just hang out and grab drinks, private message me!
