anyone else get a pre-interview hold this week? It seems odd they would inform me of a hold just two weeks before their cycle is over.... I am guessing rejection ?

Last year they handed out the last batch of interviews around the last day of February. They also sent out rejections to everyone else on February 28th. So I think we should all know by the end of this month if we will be interviewing or not.

Seems like it's just us 4... Cinamin, I'd assume we're all in the same boat, hold or not since we've made it this far. Good luck guys.

Yep, I thought it was kind of weird to get the hold message at the end of December. But at least it won't be much longer before we know.

They probably started giving people the hold message recently so they would not need to call the office to figure out what was going on and why the school had been silent for so long. I felt like the email answered a bunch of questions I would have had if the school had been silent all along.

I still have yet to be put on hold or anything though.. 🙁 I'm hoping it's all the same

I have seen people get interviews without the hold status first so I think it really is all the same at this point.

Yeah, I would love to interview at MSU and I would really love to see the Grand Rapids campus after I heard some of the students talk about how amazing it is.

Yeah totally! I went over there once for grand valley state graduation and it had a really sweet downtown area but I haven't seen the med school campus. I'm really curious

I lived near Grand Rapids for awhile so I am familiar with the city but I have never been to the medical campus either.

Has anyone else been accepted to both Michigan State's MD and DO programs? I am really struggling with which to choose. Is there a certain type of student that chooses one over the other? I am really looking at comparing MSU's schools, not an MD/DO debate (although I would love to hear any opinions)! Can anyone offer insight?

(First time poster!) 😳

Yes, I got into both the MD and DO programs right away during my cycle and it took a lot of stress off the rest of the year. Unfortunately I don't know much about the DO program anymore because of the split that happened this year. I don't want to get into a do/md thing either, but really all you need to look at is the fact that schools are increasing, but residencies aren't. Which degree do you want to be applying with?

I interviewed at MSU and loved it! I keep postponing my Wayne State interview because I'm not sure if I want to buy another plane ticket, and I'm kind of sick of interviews. Did anyone else interview at both MSU and Wayne State? Other than the fact there are more hospitals around Detroit, how is Wayne State a better option?

They are very different experiences, remember that. Wayne is downtown Detroit, MSU is community based, though 3 of those can be considered urban (GR, Lans, Flint). I liked the versatility at MSU and the fact that its a B1G institution everyones heard of. Wayne has more departments and therefor department heads, something state is still lacking. I think both are a good choice but if you are happy with MSU and are sick of spending the money, I would let them offer the interview to someone else, they really are not that different of schools and both are established with good reputations.

Just to be clear, this is an argument for choosing DO school over MD school, right?

Unless ur being sarcastic...no, the opposite argument.

Good think I checked. It seems like an argument for DO degree since DOs can participate in either type of residency--allopathic or osteopathic--and thus have more options than MDs who are limited to allopathic residencies only.

As of 2015 this will no longer be true. All US residencies will merge under the heading of ACGME accreditation. However, my guess is that those residencies which were previously AOA will still maintain a "DO flavor" and accept mostly DO students (for a while at least).

Yeah... it's pretty amazing. We hosted the region V AMA meeting here at MSU in GR a few weekends ago. There were over 200 medical students here from schools in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. It was cool to hear so many of them make remarks like, "Wow! These facilities are amazing!" and "Dang, you go to school here?!" and "I wish our buildings looked like this."

I am going to be attending the interview on March 22nd and have to figure out where to fly into and where to stay for the night.
Any suggestions?
From what I've learned, the Gerald R. Ford International Airportnd Rapids is the closest from the campus? If I decide not to rent a car, what would be the best option for me? I would like to stay within walking distance to the campus for the night if possible.

I also received an interview for March. Good luck! :luck:

Looking forward to second look so I can visit the Grand Rapids campus. I interviewed at EL. Honored to have been accepted as an OOS to this wonderful school 🙂

Just got the call! Extremely excited and proud to have gotten accepted after being alternate listed last year. Interviewed 1/25

Congrats. That's great news to hear since I was on the alternate list last year as well. Ahh I want to get in here so bad!

Thanks guys!
@mmorkos which campus do you think you will select?
@danorlan have you heard back this cycle? Keep your head up waiting is horrible but there's a light at the end of the tunnel!

I'm still undecided. I went to MSU as an undergrad and kinda want to move on to bigger and better places. I interviewed in GR and LOVED the building and downtown area. But EL is closer to home for me and my younger brother will be attending MSU this fall so it would be nice to have some family around. Decisions, decisions. I hope I can narrow it down a little more at second look day.

Admission calls are always the night before the admission dates right?

Does anyone know if people get rejected post interview, or is everyone either accepted or alternate listed? I'm on the alternate list 🙁 and just wanted to get a feel for my chances.... I'm hoping the waitlist is somewhat selective, but I haven't seen anyone say that they got a rejection post-II

I personally know someone who was rejected post Interview, he is OOS.

Thanks for the response, makes the alt list seem a little better. Sorry for your friend though, hope he gets in somewhere else

Just turned down my interview invitation for March 28th via email. If anyone needs that date, there should be a spot open soon. Good luck all!

Sorry I've been super slow to respond to messages--I haven't logged on in a while because we've been pretty busy!

Only one of the applicants I've interviewed has been accepted. I'm pretty sure at least 2 were outright rejected and the others were possibly placed on alternate

Haha that's not a very good turnaround! Maybe it's you.... Only kidding 🙂

how are you privy to such information?

Can you elaborate on what the split was?

yep as others have said, they are separate curriculums for everything now. in the olden times we shared basic science courses.

no was definitely arguing for the opposite, though i didn't know about the merger or whatever is happening according to the other poster, so maybe it wont matter as much, and regardless it doesn't affect me hah! still average american md grad will be first choice for allopathic residencies until further notice (i know there are great students at all schools that get into many different residencies, but this the exception not the rule)

Should people be getting calls today?

Should people be getting calls today?

Yessir.

The next decision dates are

February 27, 2013
March 13, 2013
March 27, 2013
April 3, 2013
April 17, 2013
April 24, 2013

But they always call the day before if you're accepted. Best of luck!
