1) .What is the most important health care issue confronting disadvantaged communities and what would be your first steps to address this issue?
2) .In what way will graduating from the UCLA PRIME program enhance your career in health care or health services for the disadvantaged communities?
3)... Describe the manner in which your experiences demonstrate your understanding of, and commitment to, underserved communities.
4) .What are your greatest strengths and your greatest challenges as you approach medical school?

All of these have a 2000 character limit and they specify Times New Roman, Font 11..

Hooray! Thanks for making a thread. I've got no secondary yet & I submitted a few weeks ago, OOS. Super intimidated about whether my leadership experiences are up to par for this program.

You're so welcome! I had initially planned on making it long ago, but just ended up focused on other things (e.g., MCAT studying, secondaries). I'm afraid my MCAT will come back too low. But I have so much research and leadership experience, plus really, really love the program. We'll see. Good luck!

I'm going to work my connections to talk to the director of the program. :meanie:

I am very excited. :soexcited:

The UCLA (and UCSF) PRIME programs are both so perfectly tailored to what I want to do with my life that it kind of hurts...I hope I at least get a secondary.

I'm totally with you. And I love your story (MDApps). I was raised by LGBT parents.

You're more than welcome! I know, I'm worried about my pending MCAT... It posts next Wednesday! :scared:

Those last days of waiting are the worst.

The MSAR doesn't seem to have any specific info about the PRIME program, even though it's a separate application. Anyone know how many people generally apply & interview for the 18 spots?

No clue. That's the worst thing about applying to these hybrid programs: the lack of stats.

What is the UCSF prime program's focus?
-Nevermind, I found out. Don't **** on me please.

And UCLA prime would give me so many opportunities that it isn't even funny. :xf:

Deutsch, your avatar prompted me to wikipedia "osinski reflex". I guess you learn something new every day.

I will concede that posting a link from that website is totally a dick move.

Thank you for the apology. I am knee deep in completing secondaries and was unable to update my post since I was working on them. So many crazy things are all happening at once (including hurricane Issac and the RNC convention), I do dumb things from time to time like asking that question.

Yup. I learned about it as the bulbocavernosus reflex (BCR) while shadowing a junior neurosurgeon resident on overnight trauma call. I was with a med student from Hopkins. The junior and senior resident took report on a trauma patient, then looked at me and the med student, and asked us (read med student, they kept confusing us) to perform a rectal exam and in the absence of tone, a BCR to ensure there was no spinal shock. We both looked at each other and were like, "What's a BCR?" They then proceeded to explain it to us. As we left, the med student goes, "Yeah, I'm not doing that," to which I replied, "Jesus, I'd be afraid I'd get sued by a woman if I had to do that!" Keep in mind that they explained the female version as ". . . while stimulating the clitoris" in the absence of an indwelling foley.

What an eye opening night. LoL

Wow. I feel like this is the kind of test that results in news stories that say "AND THEN MY DOCTOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTED ME IN THE ICU" followed my a national online petition to strip the physician's license. I am guessing people usually implement this with great care.

So I got the PRIME/UCLA primary application received e-mail on 8/30/12. Anyone get a secondary yet?

(FWIW, I received my Drew/UCLA secondary 9/6 and submitted 9/7.)

Received secondary today! This thing is a beast, even compared to the CDU/UCLA secondary 😱...and they only give you a 15 or so days to complete it!

Congrats! At least we know they're sending them out now. I was wondering. Can you please PM me the prompts so I can post them for everyone?

has anyone who has received a UCLA PRIME secondary also been scheduled for a Drew/UCLA and/or a UCLA (Geffen) interview?

or has anyone who has received a UCLA PRIME secondary not been scheduled for the Drew/UCLA and/or UCLA (Geffen) interview?

thanks and best of luck to all

I received both the UCLA PRIME secondary as well as the Drew/UCLA II.

Why do you ask?

just wondering about the logic behind who they give them to, as it's really hard to find any hard numbers about PRIME.

That first question is going to be kind of rough. I only get one most important thing? There are so many things and they are all so tied together! At least the questions are specific and less navel-gazey than a lot of the secondaries out there. It's a nice change of pace. I really hope they send me one! Especially now that UCSF rejected me 🙁

I feel like a doofus for applying here & not knowing Spanish. Anyone else in that boat?

En realidad, yo pienso es no la cosa la mas importante... (In reality, I don't think it's the most important thing.)

Don't worry, only UC Irvine's PRIME-LC program requires proficiency in Spanish.

Hmm. Still no secondary. The last holdout. Considering that it has its own application, I wish the MSAR had application stats on this one.

I haven't received it either. :/ maybe they are just waiting for after more ii are out for ucla. Do the drew/prime/regular md interviews occur at the same time or do you have to come on separate days for them?

They're separate programs, so they occur on separate days. In fact, I believe the DREW interviews are only offered on Saturdays. AspiringDoc, can you please confirm?

I found this from last year UCLA PRIME thread...

1000 primaries
200 2ndaries
80 interviews

18 admitted (guessing 2x for acceptances, so probably 40 acceptances)
10 Geffen
4 UCR
4 Drew

However with UCR now having its own medical school, I believe the 4 spots might go to Geffen. I am not sure though.

I have nothing from PRIME either. Normal Geffen secondary long since received and submitted.

Does anyone know if any interviews have been given out for the PRIME program yet?

I got a secondary today!!! It's due Dec. 7, which is the end of my finals week. Of course I have time to write 4 essays during finals! GAHHH. It also says I have to mail them two passport photos and they must be IN THEIR OFFICE in a week.

They also appear to have waived the secondary fee even though I don't have FAP. I wonder if that has something to do with the fact that I've already paid a secondary fee for David Geffen's regular MD app.

I just noticed this on the UCLA website:

When is the last day UCLA PRIME will send out supplemental application invitations? December 1, 2012. Priority will be given to supplemental applications received by November 15.

So...no new secondaries after tomorrow. And it sounds like maybe my app is on the bottom of the barrel. I guess I'll focus on my finals and do this thing on the night of the 6th.

Wow, congrats on the secondary! You and I have applied to many of the same schools. Don't worry about it being on the bottom. You at least received one. Personally, I'd try to turn that baby around like lightning to show your interest. Good luck! (Guess I'll withdraw to save face.)

I am just trying to balance this with finals...I need my GPA intact for the current scholarship application cycle (I'm applying for a Point Foundation scholarship, which is intensely competitive). And my grades are already lagging because of all the time I lost to interviews in the last two months.

I'm also looking at the app and I keep seeing things that don't seem like they will go well. They require a letter that specifically speaks to leadership experience - I don't know that I have that. Their chem requirements say it should include quantitative analysis, which I am not going to take (how did I not see that before?). They also only want 3 letters & I accidentally sent them 5. Oops.

Wow, I didn't realize they required quant chem either. Withdrew today. *sigh* I totally would've taken it if they showed me some love, too. Good luck everyone.

Yeah. I am so in over my head with finals right now it's not even funny. I lost a lot of time and focus because I had interviews during 5 weeks of this term, and I feel like I'm teaching myself the whole term in 4 days now. I can't make room for this secondary right now. Good luck everyone!

Received an email notice today saying they will start reviewing all supplemental information received at this time, and interviews won't start until the end of January.

I was starting to get worried that by this point they had already began interviewing applicants, but I guess PRIME really takes its time and makes decisions on a non-rolling basis.

Only 76 interviewees picked so I hope I'm one of them!

For anyone waiting on a secondary: a glimmer of hope...I actually emailed the program last week, and received an email saying secondaries would be going out until the 15th.

Quick question: If one is rejected pre-secondary from UCLA Prime, does that mean they are automatically rejected from UCLA/CDU as well? I was confused by the rejection email that said:

"On behalf of the UCLA PRIME program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and its affiliated program at the UCLA/Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, we thank you for your interest and application to the UCLA PRIME Program..."
