Maybe he/she was lurking and wanted to put in their input. Or maybe it's Nathan Smith trying to calm us down lol. Either way, for those of you who have already been accepted somewhere you should value your acceptance. This program is my only shot, and hearing y'all "threaten" to choose South makes y'all sound like spoiled brats.

Having an acceptance already does make life a lot easier but I don't think us being angry about the lack of information from a medical school as respected as UAB makes us spoiled brats.

Haha you guys are a paranoid bunch. I follow a lot of stuff on sdn but never comment because I just don't want to get involved, but considering I go to the school and y'all have been very vocally frustrated I figured I would throw in my two cents. I felt exactly the same as all of you around this time during my cycle, but I just didn't voice my opinion because I thought it unwise.

I'm simply saying that uab's admissions process sucks, but that is not indicative of the entire school and administration. I would still say that south's administration is better, though. And if you want to enter primary care, then no it doesn't matter which school you choose. For more competitive residencies, it most likely does matter. If you read what I've said then you should see that this is a pretty poor "recruitment message." I'm just trying to offer up a little perspective and let you know that choosing uab wouldn't mean relegating yourself to four years of being treated like crap. Like I said I struggled with the decision between south and uab for the same reason that some of you have listed, and I ended up choosing uab, which I don't regret at all. It's obviously an important decision and not one that should be made simply to spite uab, but rather because it's the best fit for you based on all the information you have. My perspective may or may not help out, I just figured I would give it

By better administration I mean a more personalized experience. South does a better job of making sure you know that they care about you and are invested in your career and medical school experience. For instance, I know that at south some members of the faculty will host a dinner where they invite the entire class and get to know everyone (I think this is spread out over several dinners). There is nothing like this at uab. But to say that uab just doesn't care at all is not true. It just might seem like this during the admissions process. They are helpful when you go to them with questions or problems and in my experience have been very responsive to the students. Also keep in mind that the smaller class size at south does make a difference.

Thanks. That helps.

Hahaha screw endless pro/con lists and decisions- I'm going wherever you get enough time to hang out on application threads. 😀 But seriously, it can't be too long now...maybe even Friday if the adcom has some Office Space fans. :xf:

"We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week."

Looks like Colorado and UAB are battling for the most exasperating med school admissions office. I'm anxious to see who wins.

:: snags popcorn ::

According to the Facebook group for accepted students, Nathan Smith is out of the office until Monday. They may be waiting until he returns to send out acceptances.

Do you mind posting a link to the Facebook group? I can't seem to find it!

Or if links aren't allowed, feel free to PM it or just post the name of the group.

Thanks!

Have been visiting this site for a while; thanks for posting, all!

Appreciate the information sharing and the camaraderie while waiting during UAB's silence.

I just checked the prospective students page and they removed any date indicating when final decisions will be made.

The Facebook group for the Class of 2017 is a closed and hidden group. To join you must be approved by a UAB administrator. Your best bet to access is acceptance or to find an accepted friend. I think there is a direct link to it on the "Recently Admitted" page of the Admissions website.

Oh wow and now this is what the committee decisions page says:

"The Selection Committee will make final decisions in late March or early April and by April 15th all applicants will hold one of the following statuses..."

Great.

I'm pretty certain that is the absolute deadline set by AMCAS so I feel pretty confident we will know at least by then.

I'm hoping for at least before the weekend...

It would really be just like them to wait till Monday.

No it would really be like them if Monday comes and goes without any word and then they push their date back until the end of April. I don't know the exact deadline for scholarship applications but I believe it is around April 15th. It would be a real bitch if they actually still have a couple of acceptances to give out but they hand them out after the deadline. If its only waitlist spots left then that is one thing but damn that would suck if a couple of people got accepted and had no shot at getting a scholarship.

Have any of you received a request to fill out a criminal background check from amcas? Does that mean anything?

The Association of American Medical Colleges recommends that all US medical schools procure a national background check on applicants upon their conditional acceptance to medical school. The rationale for performing criminal background checks on accepted medical school applicants is based on a number of issues, including the need to enhance the safety and well-being of patients and, in so doing, to bolster the public's continuing trust in the medical profession, and to ascertain the ability of accepted applicants to eventually become licensed physicians.

I got this off of AMCAS web site. According to this, you have been accepted. When did you get this request?

I was accepted a couple of months ago. I got the background check request a short time later.

Have you gone into the UAB website to see if your status has changed? It sounds like you've been accepted.

I just relooked at the list of participating schools and saw South Alabama on there; almost positive it was from them. Apologies!

Another day gone by. I'm losing my mind🙂. Not sure how to plan for next year. Any suggestions?

It's not over 'till the fat lady sings...haha (or the waitlist comes out) if you are put on the upper tier you will almost assuredly get accepted at some point; if you get the middle tier you have about a 50-50 chance of getting accepted.

Well to my understanding, the admissions committee meets on Thursdays, so hypothetically speaking, they "should" meet today and make decisions. Which would likely mean tomorrow is the day. My guess is that with more time having passed, there will be some acceptances, and less movement on the wait-list. Just my logical thoughts (but we all know med school admissions is anything but logical).

That's the question/concern in my mind. With significantly delayed formation of the waitlist, the standard- 1st tier & ~1/2 of the 2nd tier is accepted- rule of thumb may not be true this year; in which case, it's indeterminable whether they'll shorten the waitlist to keep this approximate pattern or still make a waitlist of ~ 130 and accept less (meaning that even those top tier waitlisted could have less assurance).

Yea unfortunately you are probably right...which means more months of waiting and uncertainty.

I love being lied to. The University of Alabama School of Medicine Admissions Department is a true example of professionalism.

Well, I guess that is good for all of you because I was rejected. Email status was confirmed on UABs website

Accepted!!! Ahh after two years of waiting!! Good luck to all of you guys!

Yeah. I got the email and checked my status just to double check.
