If this year follows last year's trends... there will be a second set of waitlists in about 2 weeks, and then rejections will come about a week after that. I assume straight acceptances will continue to go out once a week until near the end of this month.

edit: just want to add, I have a sneaking suspicion from following last year's class of 2016 facebook group that UMass never fills the class with 120 straight acceptances. After a certain date, everybody is waitlisted for some reason, and they pull people from that list as they see fit... which is where the rhetoric of 'half the class coming off the waitlist' comes from.

I don't think everyone knows about the facebook group though. So the actual number of accepted students might be much higher than 40, maybe double or even triple that already. But it does look like there are a lot more girls in the group than guys (30F/10M something like that), and since in the end I think it's supposed to be 50/50, maybe guys will have better chance at the remaining spots? Of course another possibility is that girls pay more attentions to stuff like SDN or Facebook...

So many hypothesis filling my mind right now that I think I can almost make a research proposal out of this admission process... 🙂

Has anyone heard from MD/PhD? They said on the interview day that we would hear back in April.

I haven't heard back anything either so maybe they are just taking their time. The current students said they had a huge range during which they found out. Or maybe that means we are rejected since yesterday through tomorrow is the revisit weekend, haha.

Also, just noticed that there are 11 people viewing this thread. Definitely an admissions Friday.

Nothing for me today. No acceptance, no rejection, no WL... Maybe my email box is malfunctioning...

FYI, for those of you who will be applying or re-applying during the next application season, it sounds like UMass will be moving to the multiple mini interview (MMI) format for medical school applicants.

I called and they said they're actually just not done reviewing apps.

Remaining hopeful!

Received an email 1hr ago and got wait-listed.
II in Nov, 3.67/38R. Hopefully will hear back soon, finger-double-crossed now... 🙁

Is there anyone who interviewed November last year still waiting to hear from umass? This wait has been the l-o-n-g-e-s-t. To those accepted and wait listed, CONGRATS! And to those waiting to hear, you are not alone; stay positive

I interviewed on that date too, and am trying to glean hope from the fact that I have yet to be rejected!

I've interviewed on Oct 31st too! Maybe they haven't reviewed that day yet?

Interviewed 2/13, wait listed yesterday (4/8). The email said they have already filled the class.. ~125 acceptances? Anyone think there's any truth in that? If I had a dollar for every day Ive spent on a waitlist... 😡

that would mean total chaos in terms order

I interviewed September 19 and haven't heard anything since! I don't think there is any form of order unfortunately!! 😕

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This wait is getting ridiculous. I need to make life plans...

Wait, what? The email said explicitly that there are no spots left in the class? So, no more acceptances are going out???? Could you post the wording?

I also have received zero news, and interviewed a zillion months ago.

One of us should call to check on this....

"Unfortunately at this time all of the places in the class entering August 2013, have been filled. However... wait list".

It didn't say anything about rankings or anything on there, or give potential timetables or anything? Just that the class is full and they're going to be selecting people off the wait list now?

I just called, and they confirmed that at this point, the best we can expect is a wait list. The class is full, apparently...

Edit: sorry for the depressing news 🙁 I've also been waiting since mid-October

I'm unfamiliar with the way the wait list is created. Is it largely chronological? ie: If we hear back later from UMass that we are wait listed, should we assume to be farther down on the wait list? Or is that a bad assumption?

Edit: If anyone else had the same question, it was addressed in last year's UMass thread. According to speculation, UMass tries to mirror class demographics to state demographics, so the profiles of accepted & withdrawn applicants could influence wait list acceptances. There were also a couple applicants that posted acceptances very soon after late wait list notifications, so I guess we can all still remain hopeful regardless of when we get wait listed. Best of luck to everyone.

I iz sad.

Is the May 15th deadline is for knowing whether you are waitlisted or rejected? So if you were waitlisted, you could very well find out much after May 15th.

Hey guys, I would bet you any amount of money that the class is not officially full right now... in last year's thread, a lot of people were accepted in the week and a half before second look. I think many of you - especially those with strong stats who interviewed early - will hear something either next week or the week after that.

Does anyone have experience with the Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship Program?

http://www.umassmed.edu/oume/rso/srf.aspx

It says you can get paid to do research your summer before or after first year. I was wondering if it were a full time thing and approximateily what the pay would be. Would be nice to leave my longtime job and get a jump on medicine.

Best of luck to those still waiting to hear!

When I interviewed they said that the pay was around 2,500-3,000 or so for the full summer. This was for the summer after your first year, not sure if their is a difference in the BEFORE your first year research program. And I believe it is a full time thing or at least you have to have something tangible (a paper or presentation) after the program to show what you learned/took from the experience. I interviewed in Feb so some of this info may be a little off here and there but I believe this is the jist of the summer research programs.

I might be confusing this with the research track program, but I'm pretty sure everyone in the program makes a poster at the end of the program. I know last summer they had an event where lots of MD students presented posters in the medical school lobby/faculty conference room. Either way, if the research track program only requires a poster presentation, then the summer research program most likely doesn't require anything larger.

As for time commitment, I think it depends what type of research you do. Some people did epidemiological/biostatistical research, which I imagine requires a smaller time commitment than a clinical or basic research project would.

I believe it's just a poster or something equivalent for both programs- I volunteered alongside someone in the program many summers ago and remember her making a poster, they're just small projects usually.

Any word from UMass today?

The anxiety is beginning to become anger. The april snowstorm we're having right now just compounds it!

The fact is, of those who interviewed last year, it is a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio of people who get accepted vs. do not, leaving nearly 400 in the dust. Very high admit to matriculation ratio compared to other schools, likely due to good reputation and lowest cost.

So why were we told on interview day that half of the class comes off the waitlist? If 50% of accepted students withdraw, that would seem like a very low ratio.

So 70 of the 190 accepteds do not matriculate, but some of those folks decline offer of acceptance long before the class is "full" i.e. Feb/Mar. You will not see 70 movements from waitlist, probably much less than that. Mass. has among the most robust applicant stats in the country (avg 33 MCAT). And neighboring Maine, NH, & RI do not have state Allo med schools. Some UMMS accepteds will go scholarship to big hitter private schools. It seems more like 50% of the vacancies created by declines might be from waitlist, so perhaps 35 people??

No, 199 accepted, 125 matriculate. Thus 74 decline matriculation despite being offered admission. **Edited for 2012 stats.

anyone who interviewed in dec not hear back yet?

I interviewed late November and one of my friends interviewed the third week of December. neither of us have heard.

I interviewed 12/5 and haven't heard anything yet

Does anyone know if they save the majority of the rejections for late april/early may?

Pretty sure today will be the last day for straight acceptances. The rest off us will get either waitlisted Friday, or rejected next week.

Why today?

Last year the final reported straight acceptances were sent on Wednesday the 18th I think, and mass waitlists went out on Friday 2 days later. Rejections came out the next week spread across a few days.

I think I am going to try to do something fun today because I am just getting stressed out sitting at the computer lol

edit: 2 people were added to the UMass group today, looks like aceptances are over
