Do you 3 intrigued guys each have an mcat score equal to (or over), say...38?

...Just mining a trend for this secret invite. 🙂

fwiw, my MCAT is above that mark, but I did not receive the pstp invite. So at the very least, the screening is not based on MCAT alone...

Now I'm intrigued too since I expressed interest in the PSTP and did not get a letter. 🙁 Was it by email?

Edit: Nevermind, I see everyone referring to it as "letter" instead of email so I guess it was by snail mail?

Yes, my MCAT is >38 + substantial research experience in undergrad/post-bac.

It's probably high GPA/high MCAT + some form of substantial research/indicated research interest in secondaries or PS? I'll ask a PSTP student today and see what they say.

I did get the invite to apply last year, and my MCAT was not super high. I think it's based more upon your interest in research and not your scores (since to snag an MD interview you had to have good stats anyway). PSTP is more for students that want to dedicate a portion of their careers to research and have a substantial background in it. If you're interested and didn't get an invite, you can still apply:

FYI, the "invite to apply" does not guarantee an interview. They interview about half of the candidates that apply. You can see the stats online.

Thanks for the insight. I see that Tots is also >38. Now if only aspiringdoc chimes in...

Definitely... I am still curious though, as the competition only seems to go up every year when it comes to all-things-medschool.

I saw someone posted earlier in the thread about letters of intent but there didn't seem to be an answer.

So do we think Pitt is receptive to letters of intent? I know that they waitlist most interviewees because a lot of them are going to be holding multiple acceptances at schools they are more likely to attend. This leads me to think that they would be receptive to letters of intent.

I'm nearing then end of my interviews, and no other school has impressed me like Pitt did. I would turn down any other school to go here. I am the essence of intent. If University of Pittsburgh was a stuffed animal, I would be hugging it until the stuffing popped out.

I didnt get a PSTP letter...I'm pretty sure I indicated significant interest in research in my PS and interview! My GPA is great but my MCAT is mid-30s. Is that what's holding me back? Or did they just not like me lol?

I do not have a >38 MCAT haha. But I do have significant research experience (been told rec letters about research are excellent) and solid grades/MCAT

A lot of people seemed to write LOI's last year, but that was when there was a waitlist, and the potential that an intent to matriculate if accepted might bump your chances of getting off the waitlist. It really can't hurt. They like to see people who express interest and knowledge about Pitt and Pittsburgh. FWIW, I didn't submit one, but I know a lot of people did.

Ismet, do you know if the student tour guides give their impressions of us to admissions? My tour had some uncomfortable moments, and my guide was talking quietly to someone in admissions after. Probably just being neurotic.. Thanks.

I don't see how your tour guide could give any kind of negative impressions about you unless you did some extremely unprofessional things. The tour consisted of the tour guides showing us around in groups of 3 or 4, with us asking questions here and there. How did you guys manage to have some "uncomfortable moments"?

If someone does something extremely unprofessional, then yes the tour guide (or the students you eat lunch with) can report that to the admissions office and it can be taken into consideration. Always keep in mind that it's not just the interviewers who are evaluating you.

An adcom here always tells the story of an applicant several years ago who was extremely rude to a janitor, and the janitor reported the student to admissions. The student was rejected.

My tour was "uncomfortable" in that there was a guy who wouldn't shut up about either his interview at Yale or the fact that his parents were UPMC docs so he was spouting off random facts he knew instead of just listening to the tour guide. It was in really poor taste, but not really unprofessional enough to warrant being reported to the admissions office (didn't matter anyway, because he was raving about other schools while sitting in the office with all the secretaries there)

I interview here on Friday. I'm making my way over to Pittsburgh tomorrow. Obviously, I am very excited!

Did folks usually interview with the kinds of specialists they designated?

Mine was nowhere close, but we still had a great conversation. He was a radiologist and I listed primary care with underserved populations.

Same, I had a psychiatrist but I listed different types of surgeons.

Mine was with a different specialty than I specified; however, the interviewer was involved with research that I showed interest in.

Sounds like either way, it works out in the end. Good to hear.

Well a nice mini heart attack to start the day...

How do I send my grades from this semester? Does the transcript have to be official or can I just email the admissions office an unofficial one?

Thanks in advance!

Is this pre or post interview?

Gaah, I don't think my dorm cable has CBS for tonight?! Is this what my hallmates felt when they couldn't watch the Victoria's Secret show?

+Is there a way to watch the 60 minutes thing online?

If Ismet's right and it is about prosthetic limbs, it'll likely include lots of the Schwartz Motorlab, which is probably one of the cooler research groups here. Here's a link to the lab page if you are interested: http://motorlab.neurobio.pitt.edu/multimedia.php

It's pretty cool stuff; I mean, you can see videos here about a monkey feeding itself marshmellows with a robotic arm connected to its brain.

Anyone get another Christmas letter from the school?

Sent from my SCH-I535 using SDN Mobile

Soo I know this is early, but the way my cycle has gone thus far, who can't wait for Jan 31st?

Not early at all, only about a month longer before we all get waitlisted! 😀

I hope that's not actually true as it has been in the past. After looking at the research opportunities at Pitt, there is a good chance I would withdraw from nearly all my other schools if they came through. Hope they do before second look!

Haha it'd be my fifth waitlist. I'm kind of hoping for some luck in the new year. Hopefully before May. But I'll take it whenever, as long as I get some good mojo somewhere.

I remember how excited I was for October 15th and how that went....I can wait a little more.

That was december 4th for me, I heard back from another school where I felt I rocked the interview. Waitlist. 😡

I guess without an acceptance and the starting of "so what are you going to do now?" questions, I just want every decision day to come faster. Like come on may 15th! And please, somebody love me, purdy please.

You and me both. If past cycles are any indication though, we can expect a decision before the 31st!

I highly doubt they will do the same huge wait list ordeal. Last year the first acceptances off WL were in the very beginning of February, so jan 31 is right in line with starting acceptances.

I hope this is the case! Loved, loved, loved the school and I really hope I get to really consider going here! :xf:
