What are your stats?

It seems like the vast majority of interviews have been applicants with > 3.8 and > 34.

Unfortunately, I'm JUST below that plateau.

Pitt is an amazing school so I never went into it expecting much but was just wondering what the general trends are.

I'm just relaying information from the admissions office. You still need to do well during your interview, of course. It also helps to show an interest in Pitt (i.e. not just apply here because it's in the top 20).

Also, just because you don't have an obscenely high MCAT doesn't mean that you don't stand a chance at Pitt.

Yeah we were told today at orientation that ~50% of those interviewed will be accepted (around 380 if I remember correctly), and ~40% of those people will matriculate. The 16% shouldn't be intimidating because it's your decision to matriculate or not once accepted. You should be looking at the ~50% acceptance rate of interviewed applicants.

Thanks for the information, I didn't mean to be condescending. I was actually extremely pleased when I received my UPitt II. It's still my only one thus far, and at the top of my choices overall. I can't wait to see the campus. I've heard wonderful things!

Awesome, it's nice to hear that from multiple people. I expressed my relief because that's exactly what it was. Seeing such a low number of interviews -> matriculates is very intimidating, and kind of killed the buzz of getting the interview invite. I think I'll do well in my interviews, but those were some steep odds! It's good to hear they're not nearly that poor.

Could definitely potentially be holding you back if it were true.

I got my II within a couple days of submission - I can't believe they even get to the application, not to mention read LoRs, PS, etc and invite people so quickly. Maybe they don't?

Either way, medical school acceptance is still a proverbial crap shoot when it all comes down to it.

Since you're an insider, how in the world does Pitt's admissions committee get so many applications done so quickly? UChicago and Pitt both get things done so fast it seems...

Would you elaborate on how the process of review works? Does the committee give preference in reviewing the high stats applicants first or reviewing everyone in order of completion? What about EDP?

I don't think the AdCom exercises high stat priority for reviewing applications. My MCAT and GPA are both on the low end cut-off, but I still received an interview invite two days after submitting my secondary (7/29-->7/31). If it counts for anything, I am a Pittsburgh resident and a URM. Pitt also has a history of recruiting heavily from my school.

Question for med students or people who know the Pitt area: How feasible is it to get from the interview to the airport for a 6 PM flight? I'll currently planning to skip the "optional" activities and take a cab to the airport. Also, this was the last flight of the day going back to the DC area, so I had to take it.

As long as you're doing carry-on only, you should be fine. From Oakland, it's about half an hour to the airport (although that time may double if there's bad traffic). Security is usually pretty fast; I've never waited more than 20 minutes (usually only 10). Once you're through security, you'll take a tram to the main hub, which you can expect to be another 5 minutes or so. Long story short, you shouldn't have a problem catching your plane, although you might feel pressed for time.

Tip: There's also an "Alternative Security Checkpoint" that not many travelers know about. If the main security line seems long, ask a TSA agent to point you to the alternative.

yeah as you are taking the escalators down to the main security checkpoint and see the massive lines and are like FML, look to your right, there's even a sign that says "alternative security checkpoint," follow it and you will be through in a breeze. it is a continual source of surprise to me that people don't bother to read signs. i've never encountered a line of more than 2 people at this alternative checkpoint.

when i interviewed i high-tailed it outta there to catch a stand-by 5:30PM flight. i barely made it in as the gate door shut behind me so you should be fine. although people would love to have you at the optional sessions, it's not a "trick" or "test" to see if you're "really interested." silly or not this was a fear of mine during med school interviews.

I always go with

99% of the time it works every time. The other 1% I ended up smelling it, I was told it smelt like roses. 🙁
