Ismet is right.

Dr. P is amazing. For example...while we were cramming in our last week of micro, Dr. P came around in the evening in the PBL rooms and gave us who were studying a meal ticket. I know, a paltry meal ticket to the rest of you. But when you're in med school, a free meal is AWESOME. And when you're studying for a final and don't time have to cook, a free meal is DOUBLE AWESOME. It's just the small things like that, that really remind me why I chose PittMed over other schools.

In terms of academic support, we do have an academic counselor, but we also have a student psychologist on staff who is also available to talk to as well. I haven't talked to the psychologist yet, but I do believe we are one of the few schools who actually puts money into staffing one, which I think is pretty awesome. I know a friend who visited the psychologist and said it was a helpful experience. Adjusting to med school isn't always easy-it's good to know that people are here for you in case you take a fall.

HOW DID I MISS THIS?! 🙁

The psychologist is a pretty cool guy. I know several people that have seen him (including myself). It's free, so there's no harm in scheduling a session if you ever need someone to talk to. 🙂

He gives 2 meal tickets to people on crutches 😀😀😀😀 hehe

Where did you hear this from? That's what I speculated, too, but I'm just wondering if you heard from a source or if this is your prediction?

There was a source, though I can't remember it now. I think it may have actually been in this forum. Go back a few pages and check it out.

The source on this page said no movement till April. This is obviously not true because I got in march 1! Good luck guys! I know the wait is super tough! Hopefully the list moves soon!

Can anyone that is living in Darragh or has visited recently tell me about them (impressions, advice, etc)?

I have three other questions:
1) I know they were completed in 2007 but are they well maintained and modern?
2) Do the appliances work well/in great condition or were they obviously cheap? (after fighting with bad appliances for the past year, I'd like to go through it again).
3) Most importantly, does anyone know where I can find images of a room (any room really)? I honestly as set on trying to get one but hate to go into this completely blind.

Feel free to PM anytime. Thanks for the info!

I live here.

1. Yes, the maintenance is excellent. When you file your form online, you'll usually have a slip in your apartment by 4pm the next business day saying maintenance was in and things are fixed. Modernity is a rather subjective question. Does it look space age? No. Does it have fast internet, reasonable heating and cooling, and electricity? Yes.
2. Appliances are fine. They're not expensive, but function just fine. Oven/range, microwave, dishwasher, and washer/dryer in apartment.
3. They don't have images online and your best bet is to come and look at one. General summary is that it is a small, but reasonably arranged apartment and looks like the inside of any McHouse (i.e. lots of white walls).

Basically, people's only real complaint about living in Darragh is that it's small (but not NYC small) and one could possibly get lower rent elsewhere. The decision is whether you think you actually want more space (i.e. exactly how much space are you willing to pay for when you're studying the majority of the time) and how much time you're willing to spend getting to and from school.

I just discovered that Temple plans to open a Pittsburgh campus. Do any current students know anything about this? Temple folks are saying that not enough Pitt graduates are actually staying and "growing roots" in Western Pennsylvania, so there's a physician shortage, but Temple graduates are more likely to do just that. I'm curious - what proportion of Pitt graduates do stay in Pittsburgh and West Penn? Personally, I would consider doing residency at UPMC, but likely won't settle down there (or in Pennsylvania, generally). Is there any perceived animosity between Pitt and Temple? Or other schools such as Penn, Drexel and PSU, for that matter?

Yeah Temple has been planning that for some time, and they already have a small portion of their 3rd and 4th years doing all of their clinical rotations at West Penn. I remember reading an article a few months ago that the plans for the Pittsburgh campus are being postponed indefinitely due to lack of funding, but at this point I don't know the status.

I don't know about the validity of Temple's claims or what they think constitutes "enough" Pitt graduates, but a very good number of Pitt grads match at UPMC and West Penn. Here's the link for the 2013 match list, and at the bottom there are links for the last 7 years as well http://www.medadmissions.pitt.edu/why-choose-pitt/residency-match.php

I haven't heard of or felt any animosity towards other PA schools, and that probably stems from the fact that we're the only ones in Western PA. Even if Temple does establish a campus here, it would probably be a small class and they would be affiliated with West Penn Allegheny (a different hospital system) while we would still be affiliated with UPMC. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Somehow Philly handles 4 med schools, 1.5 in Pittsburgh might be beneficial to the city.

more waitlist movement on monday??

I would like some PittMed student comment on this:

I feel really bad for the guy. He's got a long road ahead of him in terms of recovering from a complete leg fracture. I think he was able to get surgery tonight, so hopefully it went well. At least Louisville was able to pull out the win over Duke!

If you think the video was too gruesome, stay away from ortho/trauma (and probably EM too). 😛 You'll become desensitized to things in medical school, though.

Why do things like that happen, though? Do you think that they're were warning sides or factors contributing to such an awful injury? Or is it simply because he awkwardly landed? He obviously seemed to be in good health...Yeah, trauma, especially, not so much.

I am certainly not familiar with (or interested in) ortho, but I'm assuming it was bad luck and he happened to land on it with just enough force and at just the right angle to snap the leg. I broke my ankle (good chunk off the lateral malleolus) a month ago because I landed wrong while running down a hill. Definitely did not think that could happen, but I guess a large force at an unnatural angle can do a lot.

Oh, its my name for spanish classs....😛

As far as the injury goes...he was definitely jumping/leaping out stretched and that was a lot of lateral force on the shins there...however, pretty surprised that he basically got a tib-fib fracture from it. Then again, if you're making a leap like that, man, i'm not surprised.

Monday morning fun fact: There are two Peregrine falcons, male and female, named Dorothy and E2, who nest at the top of the Cathedral of Learning. Dorothy just laid 5 eggs, and there's a camera set up at their nest box. The live stream camera is pretty dirty because they can't clean it while the birds are in the nest, but if you scroll down to "Alternate View" you can see a clear picture that updates every 15 seconds. Nothing exciting happening now, but it's cool to watch when the eggs hatch and before the babies learn to fly.
