For any current students out there: can anyone recommend getting a tablet (ipad or galaxy tab or whatever) versus getting a laptop? I already have a desktop for most of my computer needs, but obviously I can't really take it with me. Would one be better suited than the other for Pitt's curriculum?

Has anyone gotten off the waitlist this week? Is this it?

Now that we're finally able to speed up podcasts on iOS, I think the iPad is now pretty beneficial. I have an iPad and a laptop (no desktop) and I prefer the laptop, but I think if you already have the desktop and just want something for portability/taking notes in class/listening to podcasts in the library, then the tablet would be perfect, especially if you get a bluetooth keyboard to go with it. If you get an app called Notability (99 cents) you can open powerpoint presentations from Safari/Chrome and annotate them if that's your style. Personally, I like to annotate my syllabus with stuff said in lecture, so I don't use the iPad in class, but a handful of people use their tablets in class.

Don't worry, movement will happen. It's not over.

I just withdrew from the class. Good luck to those waiting - I know how brutal waitlists are... Silver lining- they joy you get once accepted is infinitely more and last waaaaay longer.

Hope I get your spot! 🙂

Did this happen last year?

Not that I'm aware of, but maybe. I know of several of my classmates who were accepted off the waitlist in June/July but technically that can still happen. People are still getting accepted elsewhere and will drop Pitt over the summer. Hopefully they're not too far over enrolled and maybe there can be more waitlist movement yet.

I figured it was over enrolled because we received an e-mail saying that they would gladly consider deferral requests for (any) worthwhile purposes. If the class remains over enrolled at the start of school, will that have any consequences for classes or the longitudinal patient thingy?

I'm guessing that they will do what UofM does and start to offer scholarship packages for students who agree to defer an additional year and matriculate 2014, because I'm pretty sure med school class sizes are strictly capped.

Interesting! I was actually thinking about this while I was in the shower - unless the scholarship is exceptionally generous, it wouldn't be worth it to save money today and lose one year's worth of a physician's salary before retirement. But it's human nature I suppose!

Probably not, but then again.. you get an extra year of your youth to go on an adventure, something you may not have a chance for some time once the ball starts rolling 😛

Don't hold your breath for this. My impression was that steps were being taken to accommodate a larger class size.

Not an option for me anyway 😛 It will be interesting to see what happens though. I am guessing the size of the class will eventually dwindle down to their target number by matriculation time.

I thought the class size was capped at 148 by the # of people allowed in the anatomy lab based on fire safety? I don't know who I heard that from or if it's even true though.

LR4 will be fun with an even larger class size :meanie:

Penn State Hershey overenrolled last year. They offered a free year of tuition to those who deferred.

Oh I really have no idea what they're planning, I'm just relaying some rumors floating around the students and administration. They're probably hoping that enough people will drop, because I don't think Pitt has the $$$ to send deferral scholarships (unless they up our tuition, nty).

If I had an android tablet, would I be able to watch the video lectures through that or am I restricted to iOS devices? I'm debating between an ipad (normal or mini) and a nexus 7 right now (I would consider the Kindle fire hd, but I doubt that is supported). The nexus 7 is cheaper, but if the lectures are better suited to the ipad then I can justify the extra expense.

Another factor to consider: As of now you can get powerchart (main UPMC inpatient EMR) onto iOS devices but not android. Having a tablet with patient charts available can be quite helpful come 3rd year.

Hello! I was wondering could someone please post the facebook link for the Pitt Med Class of 2017?
I found a pretty sweet 2 bedroom apartment next to UPMC for only $1480

I'm looking into housing right now as well... any girls looking for a roommate? 🙂

What are the fitness center hours during the school year? Is there a swimming pool we can use, and what are those hours?

Thanks!

There are multiple fitness centers. The big one across the street at the events center is open 7am-10pm during the school year. There are a couple other ones with pretty similar hours. There is also a pool farther up the hill and one on lower campus. I can't find the semester hours for that right now for some reason, but they're pretty generous.

What's the general dress code? Please tell me I won't have to iron anything.

When you're seeing patients or standardized patients, you dress professionally (white coat, shirt, tie, kakis, shoes, etc.). Other than that, it doesn't matter. You can go to class in your pajamas if you wish. 👍

Quick question on financial aid:

In the award letter it says "University of Pittsburgh SOM Need-Based Scholarship (4 year award)."
My question is is that amount listed a lump sum of all the financial aid I will receive all 4 years or the annual award ($XXX for MS1, same amount MS2, etc.).

Thanks for your help, trying to iron out final details.

The amount listed is the annual award, i.e. that amount per year. If you really want to make extra sure though, it never hurts to give them a quick call -- they're really friendly! 🙂

See #10 on the Terms and Conditions pdf that is attached to that email. It's automatically renewed every year.

anybody get one of those automated status change emails like from 1/31 today? I reapplied and can only see my 2013-14 app and there was no status change there. I can no longer see my 2012-2013 status :/
