Congrats everyone!!! Super excited for everybody although I know we still wont have the final class for a while. Please join the fb page here:

Some of us are planning to meet sometime soon, and there will be plenty more meetings to welcome new classmates and people who will be moving to Houston sooner or later.
I would like to live up to the welcoming and warm reputation of the school and form a strong community with my new class, or should I say family?!😀😀😀

Definitely try to make Welcome Weekend. A lot of the questions you have about moving to Houston will be answered at that time.

You'll also have a great time. We promise.

I don't use facebook anymore, is there any way I could get info about whats going on with the group without using it?

i understand the choice not to use fb any more for a number of reasons, but at this point I wouldnt know any other (simpler) way. maybe you can just use a profile with a fake name and no postings/pictures in order to use it just for this purpose? I have some friends who deactivated their walls and unsubscribed from literally all their friends posts to keep it nondistracting, it worked for them. would hate for you not to be able to participate. Just in case I will promise to post meeting date and time and any major news here in the future for our non-fbers 😀

We'll have to come up with some code words so we don't get any creepers showing up at our hangouts lol

But seriously I am kidding. I would suggest the same as SCNTST to get one for the purpose of talking to current students and keeping up with what is going on. Treat it like an email and just check it once a day for updates, don't post photos or private info and there should be nothing to worry about. If there is some extreme vice against it thought we can always update people here though.

Even in the future though I have been told student's use FB to communciate with fellow classmates about assignments, study tools, tips, social events, etc..

Have any of the MD/PhD applicants heard anything yet? (I know the committee had met today to make the final decisions, but not sure if the decisions have been emailed out yet).

The UTH Class of 2015 and Class of 2016 both heavily use Facebook to share tips, resources, study guides and ask/answer questions. Some upperclassmen will also likely join your facebook group and help answer questions about the start of med school process. Access to the information that will be posted there is worth the time it takes to set up a skeleton profile.

all good stuff, and who knows? maybe a reason to get a fb account... but you will do perfectly fine without one. someone will make a google group as well, and once class starts anything that is really worth while will be posted through that.

I was just thinking about making a google group... not too familiar with it, but I guess I have to arrive at the 21st century at some point or another 🙂

I got as far as creating a circle... now what??? 😕😕😕

From my experience the use of the google group has dropped dramatically and not everything gets posted in both locations. The Class of 2014 heavily used google group for their sharing of stuff, so it really depends on your class's preferences as to which will be used more. By no means do you have to join the fb group but the most common start of med school questions about email accounts, moving, orientation, white coats, etc, will probably be addressed in the facebook group and probably won't be addressed in the google group. I personally think it makes your life easier to have access to the facebook group during the beginning phases as it's where people will plan meet-ups, offer help with moving your stuff, and where you'll be able to get multiple opinons on things like which electric company to chose. But as stated above, you can get by just fine without it and good things will be shared through google. Just remember that far fewer upperclassmen will have access to your google groups, so you'll miss out on the resources and advice that they may share with the fb group.

I think the easiest thing would be to create a google+ community for those who prefer to not use fb. Admittedly, I haven't really used google+ and I agree with serendipity513 that using fb would be easier and have better access for upperclassmen, but I went ahead and created one for us non fb-ers (it can't hurt😛) so I guess PM me if you want the link?

In my class someone made a group, not google+. Im not sure how it was done because you need everyones email address to invite them. I cant remember how they were all collected.

I know someone who has already received an acceptance e-mail.

Do you know if he is accepting the offer?

Not sure, but I know he's waiting for some other schools to reply to make a decision. At this point, I feel like we just have to wait until someone decides to decline. 🙁

Does anyone now know what to expect for OOS's who interviewed months ago (sept-oct) and have yet to hear a thing from UTH and virtually every other Texas school? I got an alternate pool notification from UTMB on match day but haven't heard a peep from anyone else. Does the Texas match fill the whole class or does it exclude the 10 or so spots that end up going to OOS's. I know there were at least a few OOS's who got acceptances early. And some that have been rejected. Anyone on you called and found out something I haven't?

In years passed, UT Houston has accepted 24-25 students each year (out of the 240 class size). I have no reason to believe it will be different this year. I think it's safe to say that these 24-25 spots are excluded from the match. I'm an OOS applicant as well and haven't heard anything since my interview in December. I spoke with a lady in admissions last week and she said OOS applicants will hear something anytime between Feb. 1st 8:01 am and sometime in June. =/

I don't know about OOS applicants specifically, but on the UTH admissions twitter they said: "If you did not Match with us but ranked us high on your list you are automatically placed on our waitlist for Rolling Admissions"

Not sure if that answers your question, but its all I have really seen about rolling admissions.

Since OOS applicants don't participate in the match and thus don't rank schools, that message is for IS applicants. OOS applicants are essentially a part of rolling admissions from the start.

To the above few posters, thanks for answering my question and for the helpful info. Hoping for some love from UTH!

Congratulations to everyone that got in!

In regards to the facebook group... There are a few people in our class with an account solely for the facebook group. Joining the facebook group will be by far the most useful thing you can do as many reviews/tips/general communication are done through that group. It is honestly the only thing that is keeping me from deleting my facebook.

If you have any questions PM me. As I've said before, I got in off the waitlist in May, like many in my class, so if you are on the waitlist then keep your hopes up.

Does anyone know if UTH is going to send out an email confirming we are now on the waitlist if we did not match, or do Texas schools just assume you know this? It would be nice to hear from them now that match is over!

Does anyone know how the Welcome Weekend schedule generally works? I am from out-of-state and was wondering what time is expected to be there on Friday and if parents are welcome to come down too

It's subject to change, but last year the first WW event was dinner at 7pm on Friday, and the last event was a Brunch at 11am on Sunday. And parents are more than welcome to attend!

For WW do we stay with students or at the school or in a hotel? How does that work?

Hey does anyone know when UT Houston notifies incoming students if they receive scholarships, and if a decent amount of out-of-state students receive money?

does anyone know, or has anyone heard anything recently about out of state acceptances?

If UTH were to pull someone off the waiting list, how long does the applicant have to respond? Do they have to withdraw from the school where they are already holding an acceptance immediately, or do they get sometime to do all this?

I think we had two weeks to respond.

Hi all,

just wanted to let everyone know that some of us are meeting for lunch on this Sunday in Houston at 12:30pm at Pappasito's
2536 Richmond Ave
Houston, TX
(713) 520-5066

this is not organized by the medical school, just some of us MS0s wanting to meet before welcome weekend in March 😀😀😀

if I wasn't on call I'd show up to answer any questions you guys may have.

either way I look forward to meeting you guys at Welcome Weekend.

This thread has been very quiet. Does anybody know when the next committee meeting is?

I am wondering if anyone could give me some tips as to the application process or improving my chances of getting into UTH.

I have a 4.0 GPA at my University and got a 26 on my MCAT. I know the MCAT is below the average but i will have really good recs and have a good GPA. any help

You need to retake your MCAT. A 26 is way too low.

I agree. Getting in with a 26 is possible but with the average accepted MCAT at UTH in the 30s you really should try to optimize your application.

I agree, take the MCAT again and shoot for a 45, make above 29 ideally, and make at least a 28. With this GPA and good recs you should be good to go! 🙂
My first score was low as well and I took my test two more times --> Now class of 2017, so its possible. Just study for this stupid test one more time! 😀😀😀

I am planning to attend Welcome Weekend in a couple of weeks and I read in a previous post that parents are more than welcome to attend. However, before I register I would like to know if any parents actually attended the event in the past? I don't want to be the only student with parents there

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I was wondering if a student can get pulled off the waiting list without sending in an update letter after they were waitlisted. I already sent in one update letter/letter of interest after interviewing, but now I don't want to send in too many and risk making the admissions committee mad. My friend is also in a similar boat and was wondering if a students can get pulled from the waiting list without sending anything in.

Yes. I sent nothing between my interview and being pulled off the wait list. I don't think update letters make the slightest difference to your chances.
