I was just wondering if anyone, especially current students at UTSW had an idea of my chance at getting in? Despite having grown up in Houston, I am not currently a Texas resident (my family moved from there before graduating high school). I interviewed just this past weekend and thought it went pretty well. Here are my stats:

College: BYU
Major: Applied Physics
GPA: 4.00
MCAT: 35

I heard that for out of state students, 35 might be the lowest MCAT, so it kinda scares me. 😛

Have you made a good case for why you want to go to a texas school? It's sooo unpredictable with your out of state status. But the fact that you've interviewed, would probably make your chances fairly decent (cos as far as I remember, most out of state students who apply don't get interviews. And once you have an interview, you have a 50 50 shot at an acceptance. Which is about what most in-state students have as well).

Thanks. *sigh* I know they interview until January at some Texas schools, but I've not received one interview from any Texas schools and I'm beginning to lose hope.

I just looked at your MDapps. You were verified around august 8th. So, in theory you should start getting interviews around right now. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a couple texas interviews in 1 or 2 weeks. Though, considering your home state california, and your 29 mcat, I'm not sure if you would get much love from Texas schools. Texas is big on in-state applicants, and you really need above average numbers for out of state acceptances.

Does anyone know how receptive UTSW is to Letter of Interest emails? It's my top choice school, but haven't heard back yet 🙁

Honestly, I think a letter of interest helps "slightly". If they are on the border about you as an applicant. And you show a lot of interest in the school (with logical reasons of why UTSW is a better option for you than other schools), then they would consider that. At the end of the day, every school wants students who WANT to be there. So I personally think that letters of interest work, as long as you can rationally explain why UTSW over everything else makes sense for you. Saying that it's a top school blah blah won't work. If you have some ties to UTSW which have convinced you that this is where you need to be is probably what might work.

In my application and interviews I mentioned that I was born in raised primarily in Houston, and that I loved living there. I also talked about being fluid in Spanish and wanting to use that in my career in medicine, and that Texas is a great place for that. (I also currently interpret for Spanish-speaking patients at a local clinic to back that up). So hopefully that's a good case 😛. Thanks for the info!

your stats are great but yea, probably average or below average for oos. i do believe they accept >50% of OOSers they interview. i remember when looking at USNWR last year (so numbers probably from 2009 or 2010 cycle) it was as high as 65%. like i said that is old data, it is entirely possible things have changed the past few years, but i would say your chances are still pretty good. and with stats like that i bet you'll get in somewhere baller even if it's not southwestern.

also, don't lose hope if you don't hear anything on nov 15. southwestern accepts quite a few people off the waitlist, including some oos last year.

I doubt it's very receptive because it's a top 20 school. They mostly care about your stats at utsw I think.

If they cared only about stats, I wouldn't be here 🙂 Stats definitely help. They prove to the school that you can succeed in medical school. But I think they look beyond that for sure. I know my class has some very remarkable people who might not have stellar stats, but they definitely have interesting personalities.

While stats are often used to indicate the competence of individuals, they really do not define the capability of individuals. I say this because I was somewhat intimidated coming in to UTSW with below avg stats compared to my peers (31 and 3.85 ). So I wondered whether I'll be able to compete with the smartest people (or whether I'd just feel really dumb considering the caliber of individuals around). So just to see where I stood in comparison to the rest of my class, I studied properly for the first biochem exam and scored a 98 (one person had a 100) (and I wasn't being a gunner and studying 24/7. I only read the syllabus twice and streamed lectures. Otherwise, attended every social event and party). After the first exam I relaxed and started taking medical school easy because I didn't feel dumb compared to my class anymore 🙂 The point I'm making is that u might have below average stats and you might be one of the last people taken off of the waitlist (I know I was 🙂 )...but that doesn't mean you're dumber than any of the people around you. You just cannot let your stats define you 🙂 There is more to people than just their stats.

Hey guys, I just got an interview invite but there isn't a clinical rounds date that will work for me. How important/beneficial is it going on Friday? It's ok if we don't go right?

I don't think it will affect your application, but I found it very useful for getting to know the school.

I have a 3.9+ , 34R, OOS. The reason its my top choice is sure its a great school, but also because my wife lives and is a resident of Texas (she goes to UT Austin). I want to go to school closer to her. Currently I attend undergrad in NY, and its difficult to see her etc. By going to school in TX, I would be able to see her more often.

Not taking into account your stats (which are fine), there's a pretty decent number of BYU grads here, so at the very least, the admissions committee should be very familiar with your school and the caliber of its graduates.

Yup...there couldn't be any better reason than having a spouse who lives nearby 🙂 Though, have you been married for more than 1 year? Cos shouldn't you be eligible to be a texas resident ??? But yes, if I were you, I would highlight the need to be in Texas. Also, consider other texas schools like BCM, UTH, UTSA, UTMB as well. I personally think family and being close to your spouse comes before the reputation of the school. If you work hard and do well in medical school, and get a good score on your USMLE, you can get into any residency program, regardless of which school you're from.

btw I personally think you're best chances are at Baylor because baylor takes 30% OOS students compared to only 10% OOS students at other texas schools. For UTSW 10% is only 24 students.

I've applied there as well. Unfortunately no OOS love yet. I might send a letter of interest to both schools.

Ya I have heard positive things about BYU from UTSW. My interviewer, Celia Jenkins, said that she has been impressed by the BYU grads. I was just there this past weekend, along with 12 other BYU grads interviewing. So, that kinda scares me.

Being scared of BYU grads is normal. We sparkle--like Edward the vampire.

damn tony romo has more ints than me

Missing II from here and its making me depressed.

utsw, a&m, lubbock and san antonio showing me no love 🙁

Is a LOI even worth sending? If it is, is it still too early?

Does anybody know if UT-Southwestern is receptive to update emails/in the area emails? I just send one to their admissions committee since I will be returning to Texas in a month, and I would really love to have the opportunity to interview there!

for those of you guys who went on the clinical rounds on friday, did most of the guys wear suits? I've been getting mixed responses -_- thanks!

When in doubt...suit up.

Good advice for life. (Also I attended this program, and the suitless seemed hoboish)

I didn't attend Friday activities. I thought the Saturday info sessions were adequate. And I got in. Don't sweat it.

II for November 3rd! My brother's wedding is that day so
I need to reschedule, but the week before and the week after I have Friday interviews already. Are the rounds on Friday mandatory? The email wasn't really clear about that day.

When in doubt...suit up.

UTSW appears to have only two acceptable uniforms:

#1. A nice suit & tie

or

#2. Scrubs + white lab jacket

Since it would be totally inappropriate for a medical school interviewee to show up with scrubs and a white lab jacket, then the default uniform would be a nice suit and tie.

Unless you have a 45 MCAT and a PhD, it would be extremely risky to show up wearing anything other than a nice suit and tie. While it's true that the school is trying to recruit you, you also need to make a good impression on them. UTSW is not like Google where people are walking around in flip-flops and cut-off shorts. These people mean business--and so business professional is the way to go.

II for nov. 3. First interview. Submitted secondary 8/19. In state

I wasn't able to attend the clinical rounds because of a Friday interview last year.

No harm, no foul.

You don't wear a suit jacket. Just a tie and some nice formal pants and shirt.

Great experience! Loved everything about the school. Met awesome interviewees too!

Don't forget that the MSTP admissions process takes up a large chunk of the OOS slots also. MSTP usually admits 25 including waitlists and matriculating classes usually range from 7-14 and it's probably fair to say at least half are OOS. I think 5/8 of this year's class are OOS out of a class of ~236?

II for 11/3! Actually received the email on Friday night.

Pumped to do the Friday rounds too.

~3.7, 33, IS, transmitted late July

First (and as of yet) only interview invitation (November 3rd)!! 4.0, 31, IS, transmitted mid September.
Will be attending both Friday programs :]

EDIT: Still confused and shocked that UTSW is considering me with my MCAT and extracurriculars. But excited too!

I better get an acceptance november 15th or I'll be really upset. This was a really great place.

I was able to reschedule for 10/27, with no Friday activities.
Whoop 🙂

I have okay stats but I am a non-trad, so that helps out I guess.

Why surprised? You have a Lizzy 71
Eveyone says UTSW requires a 70

I have to definitely say rounds was one of the more fun and unique things that I've done at an interview. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interviewing at UTSW this cycle. I kind of wish I could do it again to be honest 🙂

lolz i have an acceptance with slightly lower numbers 😛

I never got the sense that Southwestern *required* anything. Can any current students comment on this?

It's def not a "requirement" per se, but its one of those things where its very unusual for you to get an interview if you have a lizzy <70 and are a traditional applicant (not URM, etc.)

Found the following data online, can anyone confirm or deny these numbers relative accuracy? I'm to cheap and to pay for the MSAR to satisfy my neurotic side...

Out-state admissions data 547 applied, 73 interviewed, 67 were accepted, 30 enrolled

link:
http://www.eduers.com/Medical/Texas...er_at_Dallas_Southwestern_Medical_School.html

According to MSAR

OOS: 761 apps, 96 interviews, 33 matriculates MD and 9 MD/PhD. No stats on number of acceptances though.
