It's 10:30 pm and I'm afraid to go to bed just in case Dr. Chan decides to call haha. Heaven help me.

One of the applicants in this thread didn't answer Dr. Chan's first phone call, but called him back and they gave them the heads up on the acceptance. You can always call back if you get a missed call..

Okay, so maybe I was wrong about being pessimistic...I apologize. I am just beary anxious about seeing what I get.

Haha it's fine. I just think we need to realize that in the end, whether or not we eah get accepted is reflected upon our own application strength, not on what other ppl have done or when/the method in which the admissions committee chooses to tell us. At least for me, I try not to focus on the lost spot each time I hear of someone getting admitted, because they probably (definitely) deserved it, and it's not fair to say that they "took my spot" because chances are THEY are not the applicant I'll be compared to. Maybe they were, but it's better not to think of it that way. Also, this may not help others at all but yesterday, I was a nervous wreck as well, waiting for "the" phone call from Dr. Chan (I literally made myself sick from worrying for the first time in my life), but I told myself that my fate is more or less sealed, since there's nothing I can do to change it at this point, so worrying is pointless. Good luck to everyone!

We should remember that the admissions' decisions and timeline is outside of our control. We can, however, control our reactions to this situation. This in no way means it is (or will be) easy because it is hard for me too, but as future physicians we need to learn to control our emotions and be level headed. Our reactions will have a large impact on the type of environment we create for our patients, colleagues and staff in the future. I want mine to be a positive and uplifting one!
Stay positive and hang in there everyone!

Jonny: It's all cool. I think we are all incredibly anxious. This is a pretty big deal.

I'm taking a new, more relaxed approach today. Based on the idea that if you miss the call it's not really a big deal, and that the calls will continue for about another two weeks, I'm going to worry a little less.

I'm going to do my best to adopt this approach as well. But I swear my resting heart rate has been about 10 beats/min above normal for the last month.

All of a sudden it has become very quiet... I guess everyone finally found other things to do besides neurotically waiting for a phone call.

I may or may have not seen Dr. Chan in the hallway at the U hospital today. It took a lot of strength to not go up and start interrogating him about the phone calls and when all of the notifications would go out.

So maybe to take our minds off the wait, those of us in Utah can give an opinion of the Governor vetoing HB072 so that you still need a concealed carry permit to carry a firearm. It is all the rage on the news...Anyone relieved, maybe frustrated?

Got a call and message from Dr. Chan today. I'm at universal Florida with my family all day, way too loud everywhere to call him back. Didn't say in the message that I was accepted, but told me to call him back. Could it be good news?

Sounds like good news to me. Pretty sure you're in.

Ha if I had that message I would be happy!

If I were you, I would avoid calling him back for as long as possible, maybe don't at all. Ha, jk.

I got an acceptance call today at 2:00 pm. Dr. Chan just went over what he liked about me and offered me the spot. What a relief. I hope you all get in.

Congrats, that's awesome! I have heard of three personally that have gotten in today!

Got a call this morning at 10 a.m. Dr. Chan seems like a cool dude. I'm OOS.

Does anyone know how rejections will be sent out? Congrats to those with acceptances today!!

Wonder if Dr. Chan is going to call during weekend 🙂

I went and talked with the admissions office this afternoon. The nice lady there told me that everyone should know if they are accepted, alternate, or rejected by next Friday. Rejections I believe will be a letter and possibly an e-mail.

Congrats to all those accepted so far. 👍

Really, all decisions by next Friday? Next week will be a very nerve racking week.

Congrats!! Mind sharing stats? Guess the OOS spots are basically taken but I guess it'd still be interesting to know some stats. I am slightly below avg. mcat and gpa but am superior in all the other categories...like many applying.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to share some information that I got this afternoon. I happened to be at the U hospital and I decided to stop by the admissions office and asked the lady there some of the questions that are being posed on SDN. She was very nice and said that they are gearing up to send out 102 invitations for acceptances but that it is going to take TWO WEEKS to go through everything. She specifically told me that the admissions committee is still meetins and evaluating applicants for the next two weeks. I post this to hopefully answer the idea that tomorrow (Friday the 22nd) is the "dooms day" as some people have previously thought. She also made it sound like SB42 will be fully passed within that time frame. Though I wasn't able to get a direct answer if they will offers those seats before the Governor signs it into law. I wish everyone the best of luck (of course after I get accepted first😉 )!!

Next Friday or the one after the next (two weeks from now)? Does anyone know how many seats have been offered so far? How do the committee decide on who to call first? Any good news from those who interviewed back in October?

No there are still open spots don't lose hope quite yet lol

My stats are in my MDapps profile, but they are pretty average.

When Dr. Chan called me, he didn't say how many seats have been offered but he did say that there will be 102 total students this year.
Also, he said that the admissions committee met last night to make the decision regarding my application. I previously had thought that the committee met months ago, right after my interview. I am very interested to know how the admissions process works.

OMG! My phone isn't working apparently because tonight around 9:00 I received a new voice mail - checked it and it's from Dr. Chan!!! In my panic I accidentally deleted the message by hitting the button with my cheek before I could see what time the message was left. I've been watching my phone like a hawk all week and I didn't even miss a call, so I have no idea when he even called me. 😳 This is going to be a looooooong weekend waiting to talk to him Monday! I hope he doesn't think I was blowing it off..... I'm 99% sure I know what the call was about, but still not hearing the words yet is really nerve wracking. It's got to be an acceptance, right?

I know all of you are going through the same roller coaster of emotions. I hope you all (and myself) get good news soon - if not from the U at least from another great school! 🙂

Looks like you got into other schools that you like better, hope you go for those and give me your spot!! Nah, but congrats regardless of what you choose

Called the admissions office and they are now saying that all acceptances will be given by April 1st. Hope this helps some people.

So I got a call from an unknown number yesterday while I was driving...it showed 801-578-****. My heart sank, thinking it was Dr. Chan...I answered enthusiastically with a huge smile on my face......only to hear that some old dude called the wrong number 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 are you kidding me?

Damn the cheek-hang-up!!! Don't waste time freaking out this weekend. It is HIGHLY unlikely that he would call you with anything other than good news. CONGRATS!!

Ouch!
At least it wasn't Dr. Chan saying, "Uh. 'This is Gomer'? I think I dialed the wrong number."

....Next time an 801-578-**** number calls:

Gomer: WRONG NUMBER IDIOT!!!
Dr. Chan: Oh well in that case, I think it IS the wrong number. [Hangs up]

Yeah, I did not appreciate that phone tease, but oh well...sums up my application year. Maybe things will turn around tomorrow?? :luck:

I'm guessing that there is going to be a lot of activity tomorrow to kick the week off. The committee met Friday night so they probably have a lot of final decisions. I'm guessing rejection letters will start arriving early this week too. Ring phone ring!

Apologies in that case. No disrespect meant. 🙂

I've been trying to figure out how they decided to accept and/or review certain applications first, and leave others for the end. It doesn't appear to be based on grades or MCAT as we have already seen people with avg to below average stats accepted. It also doesn't appear to be interview date because we have seen a wide range of those. My theory is that they rank the applicants on interview score and go down the list reviewing the applicants in that order until they fill the class. The top interviewers aren't necessarily accepted, but they get reviewed first, and thus have a better chance of acceptance. Obviously I'm basically talking out of my butt here, but that would explain why Utah waits until the end of the interview cycle to start offering acceptances... I don't know. Of those accepted, how many of you felt like you knocked your interview out of the park?

I felt like I had two really good interviews, but the final interview sucked, IMO.

What's interesting is that when Dr. Chan called me, he said that I had one of the most difficult interviewers but I did super well and that the interviewer was really impressed. I think it's interesting that they have interviewers designated as "difficult."

I believe they score the WHOLE application. Of those who I've seen accepted/ know of their application or have shared it on here-- it seems they have above average (even if not out of the ballpark) stats and I imagine score really well in other areas as well-- including interview, too, but I highly doubt it is limited just to that. I am sure it is a strong, well-rounded application overall with nothing deficient. At least that's what the admissions office/website/ everywhere says about what they are looking for. And I remember them saying at a conference that those accepted usually are strong in all the areas with one or two that really makes them stand out. So I don't think that it has to be MCAT or GPA or Interview that makes them stand out, but I assume they are solid in those areas with other stand out accomplishments/ life experiences/ etc. Again, I am just assuming some things here, too-- at some level-- but also know they've at least alluded to this over and over if not said it straight out.

Bill update: As of this morning, the bill has been sent to the governor's office. With any luck, it will get signed quickly and remove any obstacles that may be delaying some phone calls.

I felt like I had two really good interviews, but the final interview sucked, IMO. The interviewer was super cold, just asked me five pages of questions, reading straight from the paper and not really looking up, and I think I started getting kinda hostile towards the end (like, "If you don't care about this interview, then I'm not going to care either").

What's interesting is that when Dr. Chan called me, he said that I had one of the most difficult interviewers but I did super well and that the interviewer was really impressed. I think it's interesting that they have interviewers designated as "difficult."
I know somebody who was accepted and Dr. Chan also told them that one of the reasons the U liked them was because they did well with a "difficult" interviewer. So it would appear that the admissions committee does have certain interviewers regarded as difficult, and if you get one of them and do well it's a huge bonus to your application. I feel this is too bad for myself and anybody else who felt that their interviewers were very friendly.

Well, I had one interviewer who was a pain the a$s...guess that's a good thing now? lol

Did anyone that was accepted see their online portal change before they received the call?

I've been trying to figure out how they decided to accept and/or review certain applications first, and leave others for the end.

I believe they are reviewing applicants in reverse alphabetical order (Z-A) of the applicant's middle named, in order of his or her sunsign in the Greek zodiac. I'm not 100% certain, but I think Aries are first, given that they start with the vernal solstice.

The facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/uusom2017/?fref=ts has 58 members, I think 4 or 5 of which are administrators. I imagine they send an invite to join the group to all accepted students, but I also imagine some have not yet accepted it and/or don't use facebook, so I'm betting they have filled close to 60 or 70 of the spots by now. Fingers crossed.
