IS alternate list. Anyone know why we can't know our position on the list?

Received an acceptance call from Dr. Chan this morning! Good luck to everyone out there on the alternate list!!

When were you placed on the alternate list?

les mis was also high in the single digits on the waitlist, informed by Dr. Chan during the acceptance phonecall 🙂.

so patience, fellow waitlisters!

Do you know that Dr. Chan said that or are you just assuming? Any info is appreciated 🙂

I have wondered the same thing. Since every applicant is given a separate ranking and if the rankings are followed exactly (which I am certain is the case,Legislative Audit Report) than I didn't see the harm in releasing those numbers. What it probably comes down to is the committee doesn't want to give the over-anxious medical school applicant more information to over analyze. They probably don't release it thinking it is best for the applicant. Though the process has been stressful, I am reassured by my belief that the committee really has done and continues to do what they feel is best for the applicants and future students

P.S. Does the U meet with rejected students to discuss how to strengthen their application for the next cycle? I am sure this is a commonly asked question but I am having trouble finding the thread on the topic.

No, they will not meet with you or tell you why your application was rejected, but they will tell your premedical advisor.

So are there any IS people who are thinking of rejecting their acceptance? Or does anyone know of any in state people who may withdraw their acceptance? Good luck to everyone!

Not true. You can email them directly and they will tell you generalities. not specifics >.>

I tried that, and they told me that a premed advisor would need to contact them. They also referred me to their online self-assessment tool, but I didn't see anything along those lines when I followed their link.

Lol, silly person. You were told differently for a reason. I asked and they said I could contact directly.

Hey guys, just to let you know the Idaho waitlist is moving. I just got accepted today.

Congrats worrywart. Did you get a call or email, if you don't mind me asking?

Does anyone know when you are added to the Facebook group? Do they not add you to the Facebook group until you accept the offer?

Congrats!! This may be something that I should know, but as a wait list person, how long did they give you to decide whether or not you'll be attending/to make your deposit? I'm also on the Idaho wait list, and I'm trying to figure out just how long to wait before I decide that my chances of getting in are so low that I should move on for this year.

Received an acceptance call from Dr. Chan Friday. Good luck to everyone on the alternate list!

I guess I should post to since I was ok here constantly until
I got that wonderful call. I'm oos non Idaho and accepted off wl last week so there is movement on oos...btw I will be accepting the seat

Congrats to both of you guys, awesome accomplishment. I'm on the oos waitlist, certainly hoping to get that call as well.

Question for all of you on the alternate list.... Did you fill out the supplemental application for financial aid? If so what did you say when it asks if you have a student ID? I'm an undergraduate at the U so I could use that, but as an alternate I'm not sure if I'm supposed tousethat and fill out the essays for scholarships or not... Any advice would be great I can't get ahold of anyone in financial aid.

Nm I figured it out 🙂

Congrats to those of you who got off the wait list! How much time did they give you to make your deposit?

a) thank you b) I have the same question about the time they give you to accept or decline if you are lucky enough to get accepted off the wl

Looks like very little in-state waitlist movement...I assume that it's because most in-state applicants will stay at the U for financial and "home" reasons?

I think you're spot on. I'm treating my alternate status as a rejection and planning accordingly. If the info is correct that 15 came off the alternate list last year, I would guess only a couple or so were in-state at best.

Where did you get that 15 number from? That seems high but obviously would be great

Someone posted it earlier in this thread. They searched the UofU threads from previous years and found that from last year. Apparently (if the info is correct) there were 20 alternates and 15 of those matriculated. I take the numbers with a grain of salt, but they also offered information concerning when a seat opened up last year that I know is true so I'm hoping the numbers they found are correct too. However, I doubt many are in-state either way.

I have a hard time believing that there were only 20 waitlisted students in total and that 15 of those kids got in. That would be amazing, but I feel like for a class of 82 they would put more than 20 on a wl but that's just a guess on my end. But I agree that there's probably not too many IS declining their spot at the U

I'm going to venture to say he meant 20 alternates were offered a seat and 15 took it. No way the WL was that small.

I spoke with the admissions office and two of my buddies who are attending the UofU SOM and got in off the alternate list: each said it fluctuates by year but doesn't really get more than 30. 20-30 total on the alternate list seems realistic to me now since they give the impression there isn't a whole lot of movement.
I would be interested to know how large the alternate lists are at other schools, but it sounds like they wouldn't be comparable since many send more acceptances than seats expecting students to move and the UofU never over-accepts.

Interesting, I guess UUSoM is different in that way. Thanks for the information!

That's great information; thanks! I wonder if anyone has any idea how those numbers break down...like how many alternates there are for each of the pools (IS, OOS, and Idaho)? And how many alternates are accepted off of each of the lists? (This is the only school that I still have a shot at.)

For me its mostly the money. $120K for four years compared to $250-300K for out of state or private schools. And the U's about 44th in the nation so the only reason i think anyone would leave would be due to the fact they got into a top 10 school.

I tried asking them if they would tell me how many people were put on the Idaho wait list, and they said they wouldn't disclose that info. I thought it was worth a shot though lol

When I called I attempted to get a break down of the alternate list as well, but they wouldn't budge.

Spot on. An acceptance call from the U would trump everyone else for me. I have two friends who got accepted off the alternate list. One is graduating and the other is finishing his 2nd year. I'm starting to think that they must have been pretty high on the list, cause I just don't see the U's list moving much.

However, no one has to declare until mid-May so lets hope some IS's decide to go elsewhere in the next month! If we all put out positive thoughts who knows what might happen. Good luck!
