So none of us have been accepted, but most of us know people who have been accepted? Dang SDN...I am disappoint..

Well there's probably a lot of overlap between the people we know. Think positive! 😛

This is my first post, so here it goes:

Two things about SB42:

1. I emailed the school of medicine about how many seats potentially will be added according to SB42. The reply I got from the Vice Dean for Education was that there will be 20 additional seats for this coming year (Fall 2013) and 20 more for the year after (Fall 2014).

2. It was updated today to read "requires that no fewer than 80% of all students admitted annually to the University of Utah School of Medicine shall: meet the qualifications of resident student for the purposes of tuition; or have graduated from a high school, college, or university located in Utah."

I believe originally it was going to be all 40 additional spots were for those with "close ties." Wasn't the current stipulation 75% of all students admitted annually are those with "close ties?"

So this means:
Out of a class of 82, 62 have resident tuition (assuming 75%)
Out of a class of 102, 82 have resident tuition (assuming 80%)
Out of a class of 122, 98 have resident tuition (assuming 80%)

It almost equals 40 seats after all, but this does bring in more out-of-state tuition money.

p.s. If you haven't already contacted your representative to pass SB42 contact them ASAP! My wife and I have facebooked it and my wife's bunco group have all sent emails.

As far as last year went you would see a change in your portal first( if you checked frequently enough) and then you were notified my snail mail or email. This was only for acceptances.

Found out I am accepted today. (!!!) I haven't received anything by email or snail mail, but it was changed in my portal. I haven't been checking my portal a lot, but I am fairly sure I checked yesterday--- If not then I did the day before yesterday. Anyhow, this morning when I checked it was changed! (had a tab for acceptance information as people have described earlier in this thread). I interviewed in January.

Hope that helps for some of the curious cats like myself!

Are you In State or Out of State?

Congrats!!! I interviewed in Sept and still waiting 🙁

That's Awesome, Congratulations!

Thanks! It's exciting... and ya--- can't imagine waiting since September. But apparently the news is coming soon for everyone, because Dr. Chan had mentioned at our interviews that a few early acceptances would be given for high gpas and mcats, but everything else would basically come out around the same time. I am not remarkably above average in those areas (not to mention March 5th isn't exactly 'early')-- so I'd say it just depends on when the committee reaches your application at this point in final decisions?... The end is in sight! (easy for me to say now! 🙂 ).

What day did you interview in January? I also interviewed in January.

Congratulations on being the first person on SDN to be accepted at the U this year! 🙂 👍

Congrats on the acceptance Kay Anne!

To all of you others still waiting, I have a friend that was accepted last week, he says he received a letter about financial aid last Thursday, received an acceptance letter via snail mail on Friday then his portal changed Friday evening. I thought this was an interesting chain of events because I was assuming portal would be the very first change/clue and that we would be getting emailed instead of snail mail this year.
Moral of the story...when it comes to the U anything can happen.
Anyways, best of luck to the rest of us still waiting!

Congrats Kay! Is this your first year applying?

Congrats! That's awesome! I hope it means good news is on the way for more of us.🙂

Hey everyone. It looks like the SB0042 is set to be discussed tomorrow by the standing committee. I don't know if the order they are listed matters, but it is #7. Here's to hoping that it passes and all of us get in to the U! Congrats to Kay for getting accepted!

Congrats Kay! Is this your first year applying?

Thanks for the congratulations-- and I also hope it means good news is in the pipelines for everybody....

and yes, this is my first year applying.

Well it passed the committee with a favorable recommendation! Yay. Onto the house... The bill was changed so that 82% of the class will have to have strong ties to Utah.

Where does it say that? On the legislature website it doesn't say anything about a favorable recommendation that I can find. It still says it's in the Health and Human Services Committee.

I listened in on the committee meeting tonight. I don't think the page has updated yet. It happened about 8 tonight.

It seems to me that the bill gives permission to up the seats to 122 this year but from what Dr. Chan said, it sounded like they would only increase by 20 this year. And in the bill text, it does say 80% of students need to have Utah ties.

I agree, it seems they have taken out the line about only adding 20 seats this year.

From what they said at the committee meeting tonight I believe they are only adding 20 for this year since that is what they have resources for. Again, they changed it to 82% with Utah ties tonight. The online resources have not been updated.

The update I got said that the committee substituted the bill. Anyone know what that means?

At the beginning of the meeting they had to substitute to the updated version of the bill to the current one online now that said 80%. This is probably what that meant. Listening to the meetings is very helpful if you can 🙂

If you look on the website for the bill there is a "Other Versions" section that has a Sub 1 (Not Adopted) I believe they adopted this version tonight. So the substitute was the original bill for this updated version. During the meeting, the representatives wanted to increase the percentage going to people with strong Utah ties even further to 82%, which David Pershing agreed to the motion was passed, and I believe we will see this in a new version soon.

Yes I should. I was confused because someone had made it sound like the 80% change had already been substituted. This bill is looking pretty promising!

Yeah it is! A lot of the committee was definitely in favor of increasing the class size. Some individuals wanted more clarification of why they needed 10,000,000 and where that money was going to. But I have high hopes! Especially for us in state.

Consider this is our only instate school. This is a very good news. Good luck everyone. Hope we will hear back from them soon. The U is still my top choice by far.

Yes Congrat! Do you mind sharing your stat? MCAT, GPA, Research/Voluteer hr etc ?

I'm getting a bit nervous about the bill. Though it has received virtually no resistance, the time is getting very short from what I can tell. I have been doing my best over the past couple of days to learn more about the government's processes regarding the passing of the bill. I believe, from my limited understanding, that it must be passed today or not at all because it has a fiscal note of greater than $10,000. If anyone has any other input on this I'd love to hear it to calm my nerves a bit. I know last year, again from my limited understanding, that it just didn't pass as a result of not having enough time. I hope that they get to it and that all works out in favor of the SOM.

I'm wondering about this as well. From what I know it does need to pass today, but I don't see it on the calendar yet.... Hopefully they will get to it.

I thought that they held the big budget bills until the end of the month so that they have a better idea of the available funds. I thought that the session ended later in the month but I could be wrong.

Hey guys, this is officially my first post on this, but wanted to give some info on what is going on with this bill. It is SB0042S01 if you want to search it on the website here http://le.utah.gov

Today is indeed the last day to pass this bill. The last session of the house will be today from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There has already been some activity on the bill today, including the fiscal note being made public and has already been seen by the sponsor. This being said, I think that the only thing standing in the way of this bill is getting it to a vote. I do think that will happen considering that they have already worked on it everyday this week and this morning. Just keep your fingers crossed.

Yeah it's not showing that it is on the agenda for the house...

Yeah, I just read that too. The only chance now would be if they were to hold another session later tonight. If not, the bill tanked again this year.

Do you know if it is possible to hold a later session? Or do you think it isn't updated? On the bill update before it went back to the rules committee it said it was placed on the calendar.

I don't really know, but I was with you, they had scheduled it for the 3rd Reading, but I wonder if that got axed when it went back to the rules committee. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I was just reading on the calendar and it says the 12th is the last day for school finance bills. Do you think that we may have till the 12th?

I thought that too and looked up the bills that are categorized as school finance bills and only got these http://le.utah.gov/asp/billsintro/SubResults.asp?Listbox4=00856u

I double-checked appropriations as well, just to be thorough, and couldn't find anything there. I just don't know where it is and why they would have bothered with getting the fiscal note if they had already taken it off the agenda.

Ok, after a lot of reading on the legislative website, it looks like the bill was sent back to the rules committee because of fiscal concerns. The rules committee is not going to meet again, so I am pretty sure that the bill is dead. I hope that I am wrong.

I just read that the House Rules Committee have to hold Senate bills that are over $10,000 until the 40th day of Session. Today is the 39th day. That means that there is still tomorrow but since it's a Saturday are they not meeting? Or do education bills have until March 12th and that is when they will pick back up and complete the Session? Also, it seems that all the bills scheduled today that I did open to read more didn't involve any money so that may make some sense.

If that is true that would be incredible. I would also think that the 40th day could also be on Monday. I know that both chambers are meeting that day.
