I have heard this floating around the medical school: Last year the UofU sent an early rejection to an applicant who's father is a legislator (or connected to state government). After his son/daughter received the rejection this representative decided to ensure that the Med school did not recieve any funding to increase the class size.

Apparently the U is being very cautious this year b/c there is a good opportunity their budget will pass. I know that not a single rejection will be sent until the final wave at the end of march/beginning of april.

THAT is HILARIOUS!! Nothing but 😍 for our legislature.

The more I hear, the more I understand why the U runs things the way they do. They have to deal with A LOT

Oops. They have to deal with A LOT of crap from everyone in Utah trying to get in to the med program or change it to their liking. I like the med program just the way it is and can't wait to hear from them next month!

If you love it so much, Jefe5, why don't you just marry it already?!

Couple of my frds already got accepted. Good luck to everyone:luck:

They were instate? When did they interview, do you know??

And this sucks for the rest of us...lol

They are all instate. I think several of them interviewed around September or earlier. I interviewed in late Sept and hope to hear back soon.

I think it's great that from what I have read, we all know someone who as been accepted, and yet we all wait for our chance! I have a neighbor who was already accepted who applied late in the cycle. I interviewed in Sept and am waiting to hear.

If anyone's interested, I've been reading up on the bill for adding seats to the med school, and from what I understand (which is not much at all!), the bill will be held until the 40th day of session (which is what is done to all bills of more than $10,000), which is March 8th or 9th, when it will be voted on. Just my two cents, but by all means I could be completely wrong.

I wonder if they will increase the number of seats this year before this cycle ends!

That's the plan, from what I understand. They should add 20 seats this year and 20 more sometime in the future.

So just a few of us here on SDN know of a few people who have already been accepted...this probably means that they have already filled up most of the seats, if not all of them? THus they are waiting to see if there are 20 more seats available for next years class before they send rejections out to the rest of us???

I have a few friends applying from the U and I am a BYU student with about thirty friends and acquaintances here applying to the U and not one has heard back. As far as I have been told, none of them even know anyone that has heard back from the U positively or negatively. In fact the only movement I have seen at all is on here, and not even the students here have heard back. It is always "someone I know" etc etc. This may just be wishful thinking but I'd venture a guess that maybe ten or fifteen people at most have been offered a spot.

Everyone just be patient 🙂 the University of Utah has always said that 25% would be accepted before March. The other 75% are not accepted until March. Last year most people heard in the middle or end of March so don't worry yet there are plenty of spots left.

25% wow.....that is still plenty of spot already offered...consider they only have 80 seats.

Hey guys I know this is a bit of a random question from the current discussion, but I was hoping anyone could shed some light on how there is such a HUGE spread of mcat score for matriculants according to MSAR. I know the average is 30 but there were scores of 23,24 for matriculants. I know the MCAT is important obviously as the school has an average of 30 but is it less important to this school in evaluating applicants as it does accept people with people that may be considered to have lower mcat scores of (Im obviously basing my information off MSAR). Also my friend said this school loves diversity and loves to recruit minorities can someone comment on the credibility of this? Thanks!

Yes to your first question. They don't place nearly as much value on MCAT as the average medical school.

As for your diversity question, you hear all kinds of rumors about the U and their biases, and I never know what is true and what is just excuses from rejected applicants who are looking for a reason to explain why they didn't get in.

If the sequester happens, this bill will likely fall flat unfortunately.

As for the diversity question, the U is definitely interested in having a diverse class, no question about it. However, their definition of diversity is not limited to race and/or gender. They are interested in non-traditional applicants and those with diverse backgrounds. They want people with these unique attributes because it will add to the quality of the educational experience had at the institution. For example, I know the school is very interested in older applicants (of whatever race or gender) and those that have a ton of experience, as these individuals can enrich the learning environment at the U. This is clear by simply looking at their requirements for admission. They want a lot from their applicants and they equally weigh MCAT scores with things like patient exposure and research experience. This doesn't mean they wont except a lot of the more typical applicants to the U, it just means they are very interested in making sure that they are selecting students based on more than just the typical measures of success (MCAT and GPA alone), which are definitely not the only indicators of an individuals capacity for success. It's because of this non-traditional approach to med school admissions that you see the apparent discrepancy in MCAT scores, not because they are just passing up good people for the sake of political correctness.

Seems like this thread is all about the agony of waiting (and why it's necessary). How about we mix it up a bit...

Any current U students that want to toss out a line or two about their love for the school? Anyone has a close friend who is enrolled right now and is making you super-excited to go there?

(Right now I'm only looking at the U and one other school. The other school is treating me like their new best friend and I'm finding it so hard to remember the glowing feelings I had for the U oh-so-many months ago.)

In any case, I'm assuming I won't know anything until mid-April. Anything earlier will be a pleasant surprise.

I may be wrong, but I think there is a deadline for all schools to decide by March 31st. They'll send you an e-mail or letter by then, whether it be an acceptance, waitlist or rejection.

Anyone know if the U send out email first before snail mail?

Dr. Chan mentioned last month (at my interview) that this year they would be notifying everyone by email because of economics and the transitory state of college students and their addresses. He did say that everyone with an acceptance would also receive an official letter (via snail mail)so they could show their grandma and what not. 🙂 But he made it pretty clear that rejections/waitlist would be notification by email only. And he did say this was different than in the past.

That's good to know! I'm glad they changed it.

I thought they told us it would be snail mail, but I am glad to hear otherwise. For those of you with friends who have already been accepted, did they receive their acceptance via snail mail, email, or both?

I'm genuinely curious. What does everyone love about the U of U?
(and if you just love that it is your state school with lower tuition, that's legit)

I'm a current U med student. I love my classmates and the teachers. I don't love the administrators and the dean's office. I don't think anyone else does either. You can't remember any "warm fuzzies" because you didn't get any. Dr. Chan is cool and Dr. Lee is cool but the rest of the administrators are pretty bad. Ask any current student who has been there long enough to know (MS II-IV).

The U of U SOM rocks. It has one of the nation's top hospitals next door so there is great potential to have a diverse and bountiful education. There are some amazing physicians who are leaders and pioneers in their fields and teach at the SOM. I'm specifically familiar with their cardiology department, which rivals the best. The school has a very clear and accessible program and there is a 1:4 student faculty ratio which is fairly rare and a lot of students I have talked with say it seems like even more. The students here are very accomplished in all aspects of medicine and are well rounded, which would make learning truly beneficial team effort experience. The U is innovative and I have talked with more than one physician and instructor that says that the U is being catapulted forward in recognition and success and said I should stick around to be a part of it. Also, there are many quality research experiences available during medical school. I think highly of this school and would love to attend. I'm not saying that these things don't exist at many other programs but it's good to know that they are here.

The U should use that in their recruitment material 🙂
Are you applying this cycle?

One of the things about the U that sets it apart from most other schools is the easy access to great hospitals. Literally next door to the need school is a great trauma I hospital, a great children's hospital, a great cancer center, and a great eye center. Plus several other hospitals within a few miles.

Yes, this is my first choice but have some other options so I hope to hear back from them soon! Let's hope that they get the funding to expand the seats so that all of us here on SDN get in.

I talked with an ambassador to the U SOM before interviewing and he had some really awesome things to say about the school. The hospital at the U is the hub for the Intermountain region. Because of this, as a student you see some really rare and difficult cases. That is awesome to gain the more well-rounded experience that so many others have talked about. Researchers and doctors at the U are well-known for some major advances in medicine. Can't wait till March!

Now now, let's just remind ourselves that only 20 more seats still leaves room for lots of rejections. That said, I definitely wouldn't be opposed to all of us on SDN being accepted 🙂

Any more current students that want to chime in about what they love?

well I like the U because it is instate and most of my family reside in the U.S. In addition, research opportunities in biomedical technology is very competitive in this institution.

Ok so does this sequestor going into place totally ruin any chance of the 20 extra seats this year? Anybody with any info or do we just have to wait and see in the 8th

The sequester doesn't totally ruin any chance, but it doesn't help. The best thing you can do now is email every member of the state house of representative to show your support and encourage them to vote in favor of bill SB0042. Don't bother emailing senate members. The bill has already passed the senate.

A friend of mine was accepted yesterday. Looks like we might see some movement soon.

Not true. A lot of schools interview through April and beyond.

Do you know when they interviewed? And was it snail mail or email?

I'm curious too! Will any SDN folks who hear something from the U post all details? Please and thanks!

I don't know a lot of details (not a close friend of mine) but he only interviewed ~1 month ago...not sure how the acceptance notification was sent. I was just surprised to hear that since it sounds like most of us haven't heard anything yet.
