I am sure this question has been answered, but how long until after the February 4-7 interviews until we find something out? When do they meet?

I believe they meet on the 8th. I know a few students who found out fairly soon (within a week or two) after their interviews via phone last year.

For the WWAMI AK applicants that have interviewed thus far: what did you think? Did you feel prepared for your interview and what was the toughest question they asked? Good luck!

Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Didn't have to do an ethical role play. The hardest question for me was one I just didn't have an anecdote prepared for: "What is the most important piece of advice you've ever received, and what have you done to change in response?"

that's pretty quick. i hope they don't keep me on the chain for too long

Congrats to all accepted! 👍

If I could pick your guys brains... last year I interviewed for the first time (on my third attempted at UW) and my excom kept insisting that I could reapply more than three times so long as it wasn't consecutive - and that he's been having to inform other interviewees all day.. Just emailed the adcomm and they said I'm ineligible for reapplying now tho and that they only take a total of three. Anyone else run into a similar situation?

Thanks!

The excom who told you that before was wrong. UW has a policy of 3 tries and no more, so make each application count! In other words, don't apply to UW unless you've got the required # of hours shadowing and fit the UW mission because you'll get screened out and "use up" one of your 3 chances.

Hoping for some love from UW next week. Especially since I am starting to get a sneaking suspicion that OHSU might reject me with no interview 🙁

I am struggling with the concept of sending non-refundable deposits to schools in order to save my spot while waiting for UW to make a final decision on SUC candidates. But I guess a saved spot is worth a million in the long run. Any Idaho applicants hear more news since the January interview?

No sir. One SUC and two financial aid emails. I am sure everyone is in the same boat. I don't understand how they can evaluate the 70+ applicants in only a few meetings. I bet those meetings are lonnnngggg days with an unhealthy amount of coffee.

Does anyone know if UW has a "second look" event? I kind of doubt it considering the size of WWAMI region and the fact that they have regional interviews.

You only really need to send one non-refundable deposit, don't you? Just send it to the place where you would go if you didn't get in to UW. Unless somehow you're getting accepted to multiple schools sequentially in increasing order of your preference (ie your 4th choice of school accepts you before your 3rd choice does and then your 2nd choice accepts you) then I see no reason why you would need to shell out money for more than just the one school you would actually be going to sans UW accepting you. Do ya get what I'm saying? Not really much use having two spots saved for you somewhere. That is unless you've been accepted to Tulane and you're worried that another hurricane might tear the city apart again...haha

Are they DO schools? I've heard they tend to have STEEP tuition deposits (like $1000+).

There is in fact a second look weekend but I believe the event is mostly for OOR students. You may want to contact the admissions office though since I may be mistaken and you could receive further information 🙂.

Hey Alaska WWAMI guys,

I couldn't get a straight answer from anyone during my interview day. I know they meet tomorrow, but I have heard conflicting reports of they make phone calls tomorrow too from one person, and that they wait a week or two to decide from another. Anyone have any better info? A few people there said phone calls tomorrow, but if they meet, how can they break down 40+ interviews AND make phone calls all in the same day? That doesn't make much sense.

I have also heard conflicting reports. My best guess is that they are wary about advertising the fact that they notify some applicants of their acceptance prior to receiving final approval from UW.

I don't think it would be too tough to select 20 students from a pool of 44 in a day. Some of the decisions are bound to be easy. I guess the amount of time it takes to make calls depends on how many people are making the calls, but the whole thing seems feasible to me.

🙄 It's funny how us pre-meds actually think it takes that long for committees to make their decisions on someone's candidacy. I guess you're right - it'd probably take like what? 5 minutes tops to decide on each applicant? (vs the years and years of agonizing that we do for the honor of being considered by a committee).

Such is life...until we get our turn! :meanie:

Have none of you figured out that the interview is for 30 minutes and then the 3 people interviewing us talk about us for the next 30 minutes, make a group decision about if we should be ranked high, middle, low or rejected and then move on to the next poor soul??? Our acceptance is pretty much made (or not made) based on our interview.

+1

And those applicants to be called today are the immediately accepted ones, however not receiving a call today does not indicate that your out- it means you were not immediately accepted, and are either rejected or you SUC (you are Still Under Consideration). So, here's to a long day of waiting for a call, and if not a call, then here's to a longer week or two of waiting for at least a SUC email! Good luck everyone and keep us posted if you hear anything!

I know for Idaho last year I got the call either the day of or the day after the final interviews for Idaho. Hope that helps

Yep, that is today for Alaska WWAMI. D day!

Then that is great news. I'd rather have 3 people who I have met in person and connected with make a decision on my future than a larger group of people [admission committee voting] that only have bits and pieces of info and a picture!

I remember my fraternity voting meetings. Just to accept 10-15 people we spent 8 hours (with breaks) discussing/arguing everything about these kids. Projector screen Facebook, ruthless interview questions, etc. It took a long time. The med school process is much more organized, but I am sure it takes more than 5 minutes per person. Two applicants with decent stats / bring diversity / fit the "mold" ...it's going to be debated back and forth on which one gets the call.

Unless 'bentheredunthat' is right. Then your interviewers already made the decision for them!

Good luck to all the applicants from the WWAMI region that are getting voted on today. Hopefully you get a call today, tomorrow or the next day. If you don't get the call and end up being SUC, don't fret. You can still get in at the other meetings. Also, from looking at past threads, there is movement on all the waitlists. Some just happen to be better than others.

On a side note, does anyone know if Washington or OOS people will also be voted on today, or is this just the other WWAMI states excom day?

Alaska is def meeting today. I don't think any others are meeting today. But good luck to all the Eskimos...jk ....Alaskans on your UWSOM call!

True story. I ended up putting down $1000 to hold my place at a DO school before I was accepted to UW. In the end, it's a small amount of money to lose compared to what I'll be saving (and gaining) at UW. Still, when you don't have ample amounts of free cash to be throwing around, it hurts a little, but it has to be done to ensure you've got a seat somewhere next year.

Yes DO schools and $1000 deposit. Oh well, it is sent and my spot saved. At least there is peace of mind, right?

Can't believe this...I'm in at Alaska WWAMI! Got the call this afternoon. Hands down it was my top choice.

Reapplicant, wait listed last year at UW and another school. This is the best day of my life.

Dont despair. Read the prior post and hope for a SUC decision.

CONGRATS again to everyone who's been accepted! For those of you who haven't heard yet, don't give up hope! I knew someone who got holds all over the place, then got accepted to his top choice in July (a top 10 school).

I'm curious - did many of you apply to schools out East? If so, what would be your reasons for choosing UW over schools there, or vice versa?

I am pretty sure almost everyone applied to schools out east. We kind of have to.

I don't know about you guys, but I am going to go to the cheapest school (which would normally be UW because of in-state tuition). However, yesterday I got a 50% tuition scholarship to another school so I am not as worried about staying in-state as much anymore. Don't get me wrong, I would love to go here and will turn down the other offers if I end up being accepted.

+1, minus the bit about a scholarship at another school. I'm not stellar enough or financially challenged enough to get a scholarship. UW and Utah are the cheapest schools I have a shot at, but I would rather go to UW for a long list of reasons.

Congrats to all the this accepted from AK!

In state tuition at a school of UW's caliber will be hard to say no to, but I'd sort of rather live somewhere other than where I grew up.

Then again, whenever I contemplate moving somewhere else I realize that my hiking options would seem so disappointing coming from the NW. UW has a ton going for it and it would be nice to be close to family.

I'm hoping I'll be as lucky as BABSstudent and have a scholarship offer to help make up my mind, but either way I figure you can't really go wrong.

I interviewed 2/1 at uwsom...does anyone know when the committee will meet again to decide for that batch of interviewees? I'd much appreciate it 😛

That's great news about the 50% tuition scholarship, BABSstudent!

Wow! where did you find that kind of scholarship?

***Blessings ***

Thanks everyone. However, UW is still my top choice. Like I said, I will gladly turn down the scholarship and acceptance if UW decides to accept me for numerous reasons. The scholarship is to Creighton so 50% tuition is still going to be $25,000 per year.

But let's not focus on that. This is the UW school specific page. I don't want to take away from the congrats to the Alaskan WWAMI people. Hopefully we can join them soon.
