SUC 5 for me. Or is it 6? I only got a % likelihood of admission on my very first one, and it said 47%. Anyways, happy to still be in the chase.

First SUC here (what an unfortunate acronym) 🙁
Mine said 31%. I think the numbers vary depending on what kind of applicant you are (a different # for OOR, Washington, Idaho, and so on for each of the WWAMI states).

Glad to still be in the running though and very glad to have all of you here to make me feel better/be able to look past this, haha. Thank god for SDN.

Here's to another month of agitated neurotic email checking, heh heh. :xf:

Man...if it truly is the case that April 1st is the final day for decisions, then how can it be true (as that MS said) that second look is April 5/6?

It must be different for out of region applicants...

I'm OOR and ill probably miss second look. I don't think it's different. Or I may just not be in the class of people they prioritize as needing to be convinced to attend UW.

Second look is an opportunity for accepted applicants who haven't yet confirmed their seats (or maybe all accepted) to go back to UW for a "second look." Complete with your usual tour, propaganda, stats, and figures....It's really a shame anyone would need a second look to decide -- UW sells itself on reputation alone!

For those who are SUC, I have found that keeping your mind occupied with work, social outings, and regular exercise relieves the stress of getting SUC'd!

How is it a shame? UW has a great reputation, but there are plenty of schools with good reputations out there. Anyway, "reputation" is so highly subjective that it's pretty much a useless measure after a certain point. Any of the schools in the top 20, as well as many others, can be considered excellent places to get a medical education. So if one is lucky enough to have multiple acceptances and does not mind the different locations/costs, how does one distinguish which of these schools is truly the right fit for them?

That's what second look is for, it's for people who are on the fence between schools and would like more exposure in order to better inform their decision.

When it comes to school decisions, there's much more to it than "reputation." It's where you want to live, what the anticipated student body is like, how approachable the professors are, etc. You don't always get all of this information during the activities of one interview day. For ex: You will likely meet your potential future classmates at second looks - a great chance to see if you can see yourself fitting in, liking the people you meet. You can't speak for everyone in saying "second look is unnecessary" when you look at who's applying: people from all over the country with different backgrounds, interests, and life situations. I, for one, am sorely disappointed that I won't be able to attend UW's second look. I may twist some of my schedule to see if I can attend 1 out of the 2 days though. This is how conflicted I am (or hope to be at least, if I get off SUC). :d

I know two people who interviewed in January that didn't get an email. So maybe acceptances will come out tomorrow or the next day? Who knows.

Has the % been going down with each SUC?

referring to the % likelihood of admission? i'd say it should go up with each SUC, assuming at every meeting they are left with fewer applicants competing for same # of seats (9 people vying for 3 open spots vs 6 people vying for 3 open spots).

Logically speaking, the % should go down... say they start with 9 people for 5 spots. Say they accept three, which leaves 6 people for 2 spots. 5/9 > 2/6

It doesn't look like anybody from Washington got accepted this round. Maybe all the WA residents still in the running automatically got SUC'd at the most recent EXCOM meeting? Does anyone know if any WA applicants were accepted in the most recent EXCOM meeting? Thanks!

We don't know that.

They could be rejections too. :scared: one of them said they called UW this week and UW said they would vote in a few weeks on their application. Notice that UW said a few weeks, not this week. So who knows.

But it does seem like they just sent out these emails to everyone.

The "few weeks" estimate is just a rouse. They always say that to keep us in the dark so they don't get flooded with calls everyday. That's what the admissions people told me on interview day.

Question: I see a lot of people got a SUC email yesterday. I am an Idaho applicant and interviewed in January with an initial SUC. I did not receive an email yesterday. Any other Idaho applicants in the same boat?

Idaho applicants will not hear until after the Seattle interviews for WWAMI. I am in the same boat. Just a couple more weeks of waiting

It seems odd to me that students from other states are reviewed multiple times and receive 2+ SUC interviews and Idaho apps are looked at less. At least this is how it appears to me.

Has anyone here been waitlisted yet? or do they do the waitlist after the final excom?

They both ended up with the SUC status.

So, I know of no WA residents that got in this vote.

Good luck to all the Montana WWAMI folks interviewing in Seattle today! Hopefully I will be classmates with some of you next year. Either way, so glad this week has arrived and I can find out for better or worse where I will be next year after they make decisions this weekend.
Hey I'm in the same boat. What makes you think that decisions will be made this weekend?

(Addition, two hours later) I just looked at last year's thread and it agrees with you. With n=3, it looks like acceptance calls went out Friday, followed by rejection emails on Monday. Another poster said that an ex-excom told them that he liked to make the calls on Saturday or Sunday night. Despite the cold-bloodedness of such a delay, it sounds like acceptances might just arrive sometime this weekend. C'MON FRIDAY!!! PICK ME!!!

Good luck to everyone else, too. (But mostly to me )

Well, with all the emails sent out I guess there's no point in me going by the office anymore.

Good luck guys, hoping you all get the call/email this weekend!

:luck:

Obviously, UW has much more to offer than just reputation. As a resident of the WWAMI, an offer to the UW is a tremendous opportunity. You're right, I can't speak for everybody but I wouldn't be too wrong to say most people won't need second look if accepted. It is a practical choice for anybody in the WWAMI. It's been my top choice since I started this route....and also the best financial choice as a resident of the WWAMI. If you need more time to think about your offers, go for second look, I hope you enjoy it and make the right decision.

I don't want some top-name ivy MD hanging in my office -- I want a reasonable medical training that will prepare for practicing my home state. It just happens that UW will do this and also has a great reputation. What's there not to love!

If you are a state resident, and get accepted, it is by far the best option for the outstanding training you will receive combined with paying a little over half of what you would elsewhere. Just my opinion on that

Is there a group page for the UW SOM class of 2017 yet?

I think this is why Second Look at UW is geared towards OOR students, since the OOS tuition is actually really hefty and there are only a few scholarships given to offset this cost. Besides many of us haven't really experienced Seattle (aside from the interview day) and for some of us our SO's input is very important (especially if you're married!).

Probably because they only have 20 or 25 seats for which to consider Idaho residents, whereas there are over 100 for Washington residents. So, they have made their initial decisions based on the Idaho residents they have already met, and can't really decide on the seats that are left until all individuals have been interviewed.

I would say notify them. I am telling them of my scholarship that I will turn down to go there along with a bunch of other things.

ACCEPTED (MT)

No not me silly. I'm already a med student. I never want to see another smelly cadaver or recite the Krebs cycle ever again. But a very good friend of mine from Montana was just accepted, by phone, this morning. It was her third (and final) attempt. She applied regular not rural this time. It's her first acceptance. She did it. Yaaay!!!

:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Best of luck, y'all!

I'm a current undergrad about to transfer to MSU Bozeman to finish my degree. I started college in 2004 and did horrible. I enlisted in the military and spent 6 years on active duty. I am now in my 2nd semester back in school. As of now my cGPA is 2.3 after getting a boost from my GPA last semester which was a 3.7. My science GPA is in my opinion the best thing I have going for me. It is a 4.0 right now. I'm wondering if I will be applying as a WWAMI applicant, do they put more emphasis on recent grades? I took 7 years off before returning to school. I just hate to think that me being an immature 17 year old when I started school will ruin any chance I would have in the future. Any thoughts or suggestions? UW is going to be my first choice. Thanks!

Yes, they put more emphasis on recent grades. Nice science GPA. Keep doing that. Volunteer, shadow and retake some of the classes you bombed, if possible. From '98-'00, I had a rockin' 2.02 gpa. Pulled it up to 3.13 with an all-science load over the last two years at MSU. Got a WWAMI interview with a sub-par MCAT score. Looks like I'm destined for wait list or rejection, but that's another story. The point is, you can do it!!!

That's what I am hoping to do. The classes that are bringing my GPA down are Intro to Computers, Intro to Powerpoint, and Intro to Spanish. I had a family medical emergency and I wasn't able to take my finals, which led to a failing grade. Do you have to take the classes at the same institution to have them replaced on your transcript? Or can you take the equivalent course? What is considered a "sub-par" MCAT score?

Ugh. Those are not fascinating classes to retake. I'm not sure about the where's or how's of retaking classes. I doubt that retakes have to be at the same school. I think AMCAS might not even replace the grade, while AACOMAS does. Not sure though. If you ask me what AMCAS and AACOMAS are, my answer will contain the word, "pattawan.' 😉 Either way, you'll have to research that one, or someone else on here can probably answer. I guess "par" is in the eye of the beholder, but I beheld 30 as the magic mcat number.

Yes. I'm sure "pattawan" would be included. I am getting a VERY early start to preparing for medical school. I won't be applying until 2015. I know this has no place in an ultimate score, but I took the practice MCAT (test 3) and scored 7b/5p/6r with no studying or physics/OChem experience. I'm gonna be all up on this until that MCAT test day. Lol.

I agree, most people seem to think that 30 is the benchmark all should shoot far, but below is a link to a table I found on AAMC that is very informative:

https://www.aamc.org/download/321508/data/2012factstable24.pdf

It is basically a grid that shows what percentage of applicants are accepted based on GPA and MCAT.

Note: if you look at the bottom, you will see that when all GPA ranges are combined, the drop in the percentage accepted between the 30-32 and 27-29 range is huge, dropping from 60.3 to 41.7 %

Not sure what year you are planning to sit for the exam, but don't forget that in 2015 the MCAT will look very different than it does now:
