So my stats were under the minimum for Wisco. I got an email saying that I didn meet the minimum and that my app was under further review back in July-- 2 days ago, I got an email saying: "After further review of your app we'd like to invite you to complete our secondary application."

I do have a steller personal statement, steller work and activities, steller research, and steller letters of rec, and a steller upward trend in GPA. I'm really not making that up. But my overall GPA... and MCAT sadly, are the opposite of steller.

Can I infer anything from this email? Does that mean that they would at least potentially consider me or what? This is in my top 3 choices... I want to be a Badger.

Sounds like you passed their initial review. File away! I'm sure letting them know of your passion for UWSMPH won't hurt.

but but but... where's mine???? I didn't submit till the 26th, sigh... oh well. I wouldn't be able to go to these interview days anyway. pretty fast turnaround from invite to actual interview day

I was complete 8/31.....fingers crossed! Need some in-state love this week

congrats on the II! are you trying to fly into madison? unfortunately it's a small airport and flights are scarce/more expensive. you could try to fly into either milwaukee or chicago and take a bus here, but IMO it's not worth the hassle. you might just have to deal with whatever you're able to get into madison

Sadly both MKE and BDL (Hartford) are small airports! I finally found a flight to and from LaGuardia. 218 for the tickets, though, not bad!

So when is everyone interviewing? Who is going to the social?

Also, any advice on what to expect at the interview? Dos/Don'ts?

i interviewed here last year and my experience, though I only had 3 interviews total so take it with a grain of salt, is that this is a veryyyyyy lonnnggggggggg interview day. (if they keep it the same) they are going to bombard you over and over again about "why wisconsin?" way more excessively than the other 2 schools I was at. I guess part of my boredom/monotony during the day was that i did undergrad here and was already sufficiently sold on the school. I understand that if it's your first time here they want to do everything they can to convince you.. anyways good luck! be prepared for a plethora of presentations

OOS rejection email received just now. Good luck everyone still in the running!!

Hey guys,

To those that attend or got interviews I was just wondering how in depth you went into your time line of work and activities. If I wrote everything, I could be here all day. Should I stick with only significant things or go all out?

Thanks!

I didn't copy and paste from my AMCAS, but I only write a paragraph or so for each activity. What activities I listed were pretty much identical to AMCAS however. I also tossed in a leisure activity or two (ex. music).

Step 1: Receive a call from an unknown number. Don't answer.
Step 2: Realize the call came from an area code that a school you applied to belongs in.
Step 3: FREAK OUT
Step 4: Realize that UW sends invites by e-mail only.
Step 5:🙁

Thanks for the heads-up. It did sound like it was going to be a long day, the interview is from ~11a-5p or so? That's okay, though, I'm just happy to have a shot at this school. 🙂 Thanks again!

OOS CT here, interview invite for Oct 12th. Anyone else going to the social? I'm having trouble finding flights that arrive and leave at an appropriate time... Suggestions, anyone?

Not necc only for you, but all people reading this thread. Don't stress the social if you can't make it. It's totally not a big deal and won't affect your candidacy one way or another. It's a nice way to meet some m1/2s who want free food, but that's about it.

I received a secondary today. I have low stats (3.53 GPA engineering major with 29 mcat) but very strong and "stand out" extracurriculars and essays. Do I have a shot being an out of state applicant?

Did most people write about a life challenge or hardship you overcame here? It says to
Tell them anything at all, but then lists a bunch of tough times to write about.

i'd already discussed some of these "tough times" at length in my personal statement, and couldn't find a unique way to talk about it again, so I left the essay blank. unless you have something that hasn't been discussed elsewhere, i wouldn't write anything

To be honest, doubtfull. However crazier things have happend. As everyone has answered the question before me, it's an automatic rejection if you don't turn that secondary in. If you have the money, and like Madison, do it. It is an awesome school in a great city.

One of my friends got in last year from out of state, she was 3.3 and 33 and honestly nothing too special in her app. Her strongest points were that she'd been involved in research for 3 years, and that she was an RA. So yeah you should apply. This is the advice she have me as well. Plus it's a pretty cheap secondary, might as well!

If we are simplifying an applicant down to only 2 or three things, it can happen, but a 29 and a 33 are very different scores. I'm not really one to judge anyway, but yeah it is possible.

Anyone going to the 28th interview date? I won't be able to make the social, but I would otherwise see you there. Also heard some people are interviewing this Friday (21st), mind sharing interview questions? It'd be much appreciated.

The interview email mentions:

"There will be a one-on-one faculty interview and a small group interview with two medical students..."

Anyone have any insight into this "small group interview"?

mine was 3 interviewees and 2 med students. they asked us a bunch of random questions- none of the typical "why medicine?" or anything like that- and we'd each answer. it's weighted equally with the faculty one even tho it's more laid back

Definitely pretty laid back, but don't blow it off either. I actually did get asked "why medicine?", but I also got asked the "If you could mean anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why?" type questions. I think it's mostly to see that you can have an intelligent conversation amongst your potential future classmates. Try to find a balance between participating but not being the only one who talks. The impression I got was that this was more about being a team player rather than trying to outdo fellow applicants.

INTERVIEW INVITE! :soexcited:

As an IS I'm so pumped to come home for this interview!

Apologies if this issue has been addressed before. I am an (OOS) applicant thinking of adding U of Wisconsin to my list of schools relatively late in the game. I was wondering if anybody knows exactly how strict they are about the requirement of a letter of recommendation from a "nonacademic source"? My letter packet (which contains only letters from faculty members at my university) has already been submitted to the other schools I'm applying to, and I don't really want to solicit an additional letter. Does that rule out my application to this school?

You should try calling an asking, the admissions office is very nice and really open to any questions. It does appear that according to their website, no matter the method of submissions (letter packet vs individual letters) you will need to have 1 non-academic letter. Though, I am not a part of the admissions office, so you should call and ask to verify.

I see that some people are unsure as to whether to attend the social before interview day. I would say that if you have nothing really going on the night before it wouldn't hurt to come in and check the place out. I would highly advise any out of town applicants to come and do a little "recon" before the big day the following morning. It's very informal and none of the students present there report anything to the admissions committee so it's a great way to get some questions answered and meet fellow applicants. I went when I interviewed last year; felt comfortable with my travel time and finding the place, ate some free food, chatted about what medical school is like at UWSMPH and met some fellow applicants. So, you don't really lose anything by attending. But by no means is it anything required or formal.

Ill be joining some of the socials and doing some tours throughout the applicant year, so feel free to ask me any questions should you have them! Cheers and good luck everyone!

I'd also like to follow up regarding the applicant social. I'm a current student at UWSMPH & when I interviewed at UW I attended the social the night before. It's definitely relaxed & a question-based event (but also major points are hit even if someone doesn't ask them directly). It sounds ridiculous but it was one of the reasons why I ended up choosing UW. The students who hosted seemed normal, fun, & happy. So even if every question that's asked may not apply to you, I think it's still a worthwhile event to go to if you have the time.

So anyone can help me out with this one - I'm an IS applicant and got accepted for an interview quite a while ago (October 5th date woo!) - and I'm excited out of my mind. I've got a slightly lower GPA but everything else is fine. I read on an old UWSMPH applicant thread that ALL IS applicants are invited to interview... is this true? Because my interview is in a week and a half and I was feeling super excited, but now not so much. Any light shed on the truth would be really awesome...

P.s. for anyone wondering, I will indeed by attending the social. Why not? Do some recon like the above person said and meet some med students and POSSIBLE classmates... FREE FOOD FOR POOR PEOPLE! nothing wrong with that 😉

that is definitely not true. i dont remember the exact numbers from msar and am way too lazy to look right now but I think about 50-60% of IS are invited to interview.

Without knowing any specifics about your extracurriculars and such, I would say why not? I had similar stats to yours last year and got accepted as an OOS applicant. You will never know if you had a shot unless you try.

Woo! O good 🙂 I'm not sure why it mattered but it just makes me feel a tiny bit more confident knowing I made the first cut persay. Thanks for the insight, that's what I thought my MSAR said too but I couldn't find my book and just starting tweeking out a bit.

My thanks 🙂
