Thanks! I'm trying to be optimistic. I'm in a better position than a lot of other people so I should be happy. It just seems like so many of those accepted this year, went through this last year and it did not work out for them. I'll try to remain open minded until I know my WL rank.
 
In r/t dual residency status. I wasn't sure it was going to work, but I figured I should try. When I applied to UW I gave info about my childhood and my parents years of tax filings. My residency status was applied about 3 weeks after I sent in my secondary app way back last fall. I have lived in Minnesota for the last 4 years, which qualifies to them as a resident. I was surprised Madison gave me residency status that quick, but I wasnt gonna argue!

Same situation for me. Grew up in Wisconsin, but I live in DC now. I should have tried to get DC residency for Georgetown and GW just to get some more interviews. I'm not a huge fan of those schools though, so not really a big deal. Congrats on the acceptance!

Anyhow, I received a nice scholarship offer here during the weekend and it pretty much sealed the deal for me. Will withdraw from other schools following second-look week.
 
Wait list rank letter arrived today... I almost had a heart attack opening it. But if movement is like last year.... Looks like I might be moving to Madison after all.
 
No way! Do you live in Madison? This is going to drive me crazy. If mine got sent I won't get it for another day or two...

I live near Milwaukee, so kind of close. But I know I was shocked it came so soon. The letter is dated March 27th, so Hopefully yours will arrive soon too!!

Haha should have inferred because you said "move to Madison". I'll probably get mine tomorrow or the next day. It's strange that it took yours that long to get to you. Well congrats, hopefully the WL moves this year.

Good luck to you both! Waitlists can be depressing but keep your hopes up because as more time goes by people will be dropping their acceptances.
 
Not even ranked, rejection. Why was I even wait listed last week?
 
Trying to figure out housing stuff for next year if I decide to go to UW. The budget says $750 for rent/utilities...and then there's money allocated for transportation, misc., etc. Anyone know how much of these "normally" get used by (single) students? I'm trying to figure out if I have some wiggle room for rent, and if so, how much.

You prolly have some wiggle room. You don't necc need a car m1-2.

I get the feeling they do this just to see if people will apply again. I took 2 years off to strengthen my application so I could get in the first time. I still have WLs pending with MN and UCSD so hopefully one of them comes through. This is just really disconcerting because I contacted both of my interviewers and they both said they gave me great reviews. Apparently the interviews don't matter a whole lot. I'm not sure why they even interviewed me if I didn't even have a chance at getting ranked on the WL, let alone an acceptance.

Sorry to hear that you were rejected. I thought I'd take a year off following graduation to strengthen my application too and life kicked me in the rear...that break ended up being 5 years. However, I wouldn't trade any of those experiences for earlier admission into med school. You still have a chance at UM n UC! I wish you the best of luck.:luck:

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I've had some great experiences these past two years so I agree with you for the most part. I would however, like to get this show on the road. I'm pretty sure that I will end up being a surgeon of some kind by the end of all this. Given the length of surgical residencies and the possibility of a fellowship afterward, it would be nice to be practicing before I'm 40.

Just to give a little hope to waitlist folks, it looks like I am probably going to withdraw. I have to wait for some factors to solidify over the next few weeks before I can do that, but it is pretty likely. University of Wisconsin is lovely as are Madison and all the people in it...but I think I am going to be stolen away by the other UW.

Aww. I was hoping you would choose Madison. Congratulations on having made a decision, though. UWashington has probably one of the best (if not the best) global health programs in the country. I'm a little jealous!

I think it's hilarious that you're choosing between UW and UW. Madison and Seattle are the only two cities in the country that lie on an isthmus. They're both public schools and they share the same name. I hope you sent your withdrawal letter to the right UW!! haha. I'm only kidding. Congratz!

Thanks! I really did like U of Wisconsin, but overall I think Washington is a much better fit. I do think it sounds like Wisconsin's administration is more personally attentive to the student body than almost anywhere I've seen though. Wonderful place & wonderful people all around.

So who would win in a fight? A Husky, or a Badger? :naughty:

It looks like all my fellow applicants have abandoned SDN, but I can make a few suggestions.

Great news is UW is not an MCAT-centric school (not even for OOS). Just make sure you have a decent GPA and MCAT. UW emphasize experiential diversity rather vigorously. I did not meet any OOS student at second look coming straight from undergrad. People took from 1 to 5 years off between undergrad and med school. If you're IS, it's a different story. There were quite a few IS students coming straight from undergrad and they're evaluated by a different committee with a different set of metrics.

It seems like UW wants to see a pattern of civil and social engagement. That means you should volunteer in meaningful ways. There's an activism/advocacy component to the medical curriculum at UW, so you know they want people who are politically opinionated and passionate about working with the underserved. There are quite a few AmeriCorp veterans at second look (one of my interviewer was an AmeriCorp vet, the other was a TFA vet).

I posted this in another thread (Panic Thread) but it might help you out. It's a little story about what happened to me this year as a Madison applicant.

I just had a phone meeting yesterday with the advisor at Madison (my state school). Madison put me on hold for interview in November, offered me an interview in December, interviewed me on the last day of interviews (February), wait listed me, and rejected me a week later. Come to find out that they loved me, they were just concerned because I was lacking clinical experience. Turns out, my interviewer didn't mention that I had been shadowing an internist every Thursday morning since November and watching neurosurgeries at work..... I felt sick to my stomach when I heard it. Silver lining is that I now know what the concerns were and it's likely that the other schools that wait listed me have the same concern. Kickass update is being composed for UCSD!

I started shadowing after my primary and secondary for Madison were submitted. Madison makes it very clear that at the end of the faculty interview you have the opportunity to include any updates (this is the only opportunity to update anything about your file). I told her to included some abstracts I put out and a protocol amendment I had written for a new project but I didn't mention the shadowing specifically. I didn't mention it at that point because we had talked about it for about 10 minutes during the interview. She just didn't say anything about it in the report she wrote. It was my mistake but I just assumed it would get mentioned.

After speaking with her (the advisor) it was kind of a wakeup call. A solid update can make ALL the difference. I was paranoid about a couple things such as my 8 in VR and the fact that I have done 5 years of research without a publication (work is coming to a head and I'll have around 4-5 this summer). At least at Madison, all they want is a composite score of 30 or better because it means you will pass step 1 the first time. Even a 28 or 29 is usually good enough for them. She said they really liked that I work at NIH and they had no concerns about my ability to succeed academically. It became very apparent that with the high number of qualified applicants it only takes a minor shortcoming to get wait listed or rejected in this process.

I asked the advisor about that and she said the decision is pretty set in stone but who knows. There is always a chance. I was planning to send it to Dean Hansen. If for nothing else, just to get on his radar for next year if MN and SD don't take me.
 
Hey Guys,

I've been accepted to UW since October, but I have just made the decision to go. I'm currently a senior at UW, and I was fortunate enough to be able to study abroad in Seville, Spain this semester. I have an engineering roommate that is taking a job in Madison, and both of us are going to live on Old University near the Hospital. We don't have an exact apartment yet, but there are a couple buildings in that area that still have many 2-4 bedroom apartments open. If anyone is looking for a roommate, send me a message.

Called Dean Hansen yesterday and he said there is nothing that can be done. After talking to a couple people it seems like they may have just been concerned about my commitment to medicine. I'm not entirely surprised because on paper I definitely come across as a researcher, not a physician. In general, they said just reapply again to show you are persistent and you'll get in. Really frustrated, but I'll do what I have to do to get in.

I'm planning on calling them in two days (once the acceptance deadline has passed). Hopefully there is some movement! Probably not very indicative of anything, but there are a few less people on the incoming class facebook page than there were a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked when I realized it was over and I didn't get in anywhere. SD is a very long shot and Minnesota just ranked me 155 so that isn't happening. I've been pretty angry about all of this, but reapplying means a pretty stress free year, I don't have to start an application from scratch, and another year at NIH will help when I have to apply for residencies. It's not all bad. Good luck to everyone this fall, maybe I'll see you in a year.
 
Got the call ~2 hours ago..accepted from the WL (IS)! I asked about how far they might go and they said that for a while they didn't think they would go to the WL, but a lot of people dropped, and as of 2 hours ago said that 'for now' they are only going to take about 4 people from the WL, and then continue forward if/as more people drop. good luck!
