2013-2014 Cooper Medical School Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can any current med students or faculty comment on what gets you an Interview Invite here? Like I said before, my attempt at reaching out was returned with a big, smug, middle finger.

Out of curiosity, what was the response?

Errr, not going to quote for identification purposes, but it was along the lines of "you were rejected so you're not worth the time to respond to. We have successful applicants to attend to. goodluck!" 😱 Repeat, this is not a quote, but the sentiments of the email summarized.

I'm not going to bother applying if I don't have a shot. And did any in-state people get rejected presecondary? I'm IS so this is one of the few schools that would be awesome to go to, but sounds like they have no interest in me last year, so I didn't bother putting in a primary even.

I was. My MCAT isn't too great and my rejection letter basically said I "wasn't competitive for a secondary" so eh.

base on this timeline, i should be getting my rejection email any second now... :/

Got rejected here on 9/17 (submitted my secondary 7/23). IS resident with stats well above their average. I guess I am not what they are looking for! Good luck to everyone applying here 👍

Just wanted to offer an update. I interviewed Friday the 27th and it was a just an electric feel all day. The school is beautiful, the curriculum is incredible, and the faculty are just overwhelmingly committed to helping their students succeed. My interview was with 1 professor/department chair who was blind and with a member of the administration who had an open file. Mine in particular was hard to gauge as they did a pretty good job of shielding any reactions or emotions, but overall it felt like it was quick and before I knew it my time was up. The patient sim is nothing to stress over - I promise. They said it best - the best preparation was what we were already doing, which was going around the room interacting with our peers. They're 100% committed to service; it's reflected in their mission and their curriculum, so if you've got that to talk about for sure make it a strong point. Good luck to everyone!! No one hears back until October 15th at the earliest, so my fingers and toes are crossed for all of us until then!

I will vouch for the voracity of these claims, lol. 🙂 Interviewing here was a great experience!! Not only is the facility beautiful, but I was tremendously impressed with how supportive the administration is of the students. It is a genuine partnership between students and faculty.

Another thing that impressed me greatly was CMSRU's commitment to the community. Not only are they committed to improving the health of the Camden and South Jersey community, they have made a big commitment to revitalizing the city itself. Plenty of schools just talk about their commitment to the community, Cooper backs it up. I would be honored to receive my medical education here.

So the earliest interview date is December 13, more than 2 months away. I know Cooper interviews only on Fridays, but I'm a bit wary as to what that means. There were two dates open in January and two in February as well. Are all the Fridates before then filled, as in all the October and November dates (except maybe the Friday before Thanksgiving weekend)?

And does anybody know the percentage of interviewees who get acceptance?

Thanks!

Yeah, I belIeve the first dates are back in September. So it looks like everything is full until December. You could try calling the admissions office and see how they handle cancellations. You might be able to switch to an earlier time slot as a result, but that's all based on a little chance and whether or not the admissions office will allow it.

All interviews are on Fridays from what I gathered on the website and for me this was a relief due to my class schedule. As for percentages. Its about a 10% chance of getting the interview so you should be very proud of yourself. Beyond that I am not sure. Although its up to you in the end. Be yourself and you should be fine. From the sound of it they are low stressinterviews. So just show up well prepared and show them why they chose you for an interview! !! 😀

+1 I'd also love to hear this if anyone has this information (post-interview acceptance rate)

The committee meets today to assess the candidates from the first two interview days! Unfortunately we won't find out until the 15th.

Fingers crossed! Please pick me, lol!!!

Any info on this, anyone know?

I think they said if you were invited for an interview at Cooper, you have 50-60% acceptance rate. Last year, 80% of those who were invited for an interview at Cooper was accepted to a medical school of some kind.

I recall being told the same thing at the September 13th interview. They went through a lot of trouble to reinforce that gaining an interview was a good thing, well as long as you match up with what your application made you seem to be.

OOS 3.5/3.5/30

Hello. I have an interview invitation for 7:45 a.m.. Does anyone know, more or less, what time the day wraps up? Thank you and good luck.

do you think it was cause of the oos or low stats or secondary essays? i'm trying to figure out why this school seems so random with the ii selections

This school definitely looks for students that fit their mission. So I presume they look closely at the personal statement, EC's and secondary essays while placing a lesser emphasis on stats (as seen in the MSAR).

Thanks guys! Makes me more excited 🙂

FYI for other traveling interviewees.

I stayed at the Society Hill Hotel at 301 Chestnut and 3rd (not the expensive one nearby) for $110 total a night. Had one tiny but clean room and then one giant room, so just ask for something bigger.

A few blocks from PATCO. Left at 7 a.m. for the 7:45 call (I walk slowly and it was raining). Close as well to a Megabus dropoff at 6th and Market.

This is the spitting image of a European pensione (except no breakfast :-( ), not a full-service American chain, but if that works for you, it's a great deal. Bring your hairdryer!!!

For dinner I recommend the $10 burger and pint at Barra around the corner, 239 Chestnut. The hotel's bar/pub is tasty but overpriced. Though food is not first on our minds these days, this is no ordinary burger.

Good luck!

Edit: there is also a chichi small grocery, Liberty Bell Food Market, on 29 S. 2nd between Market and Chestnut if restaurants will not work for you. Coffee places abound for the a.m.

Wow, will we 100% know on the 15th via the online portal???? Do you know if September 27th was one of the first two interview days lol

This. One look at their stats in the MSAR shows they are not obsessed with numbers which is awesome 🙂

The 27th was the second interview day, and we will know on Tuesday. It will either be accepted, rejected, or wait-listed. I am fairly certain it will be via email.

Oh dear lord thank you so much for that info. Patiently waiting! Good luck to you be sure to let me know if we might be classmates haha

Have to say that I was laughing and enjoying myself this entire campus visit. Everyone seemed so happy and relaxed (despite being medical students! ). This school felt so incredibly "different" in the best way possible. Literately changing camden using Cooper as a central locus of change. Buying out buildings around the medical school to not only improve the school but also the community. Absolutely love the passion around the mission statement and the actions to back themselves up. Probably the most supportive staff imaginable too and cannot believe how they almost eliminated the stress of the interviews. Never felt so incredibly proud of getting an interview in my life... Excited to hear back from them. I think that I was the third interview day so it might not be tomorrow.

Good Luck everyone!!!

Is anyone else staying up in hopes that decisions go out at midnight??? Lol. The email they sent the other day made it sound like they are just waiting for the clock to turn so that it can be the 16th of October.

Belated congrats on the interview, Blackxp! Glad to see you enjoyed your experience at Cooper! If you don't mind my asking, what were the interviews like, especially the OSCE patient sims? And did your interviews have more of a conversational feel, or was it more Q and A style?

Good luck to you!!

Its very relaxed and the sims themself were less stressful than the intervIew. I read a few posts saying the same thing on here, but still entered the day with a little stress. I can guarantee that by the time you are waiting for them that you will feel much better though. I cannot disclose anything specific, but be yourself. They were quite fun! Traditional interviews were very conversational!

Good Luck!

Hoping for some good news real soon!! Midnight cannot come fast enough!! :xf:
