2013-2014 New York University (NYU) Application Thread

They are recommended. I think they (especially private schools) will overlook you not having biochem if you have done research - but you should still ask. From what I hear, biochem is becoming more and more important course.

Are you applying this cycle? I didn't take Biochem (I took the absolute bare minimum number of pre-med classes to apply) and it was no problem. Starting next cycle, more and more schools will be requiring Biochem and dropping the requirement for two semesters of Orgo. Psychology and possibly Sociology may also start to be strongly recommended/required as the new MCAT is introduced.

Yeah I am. Biochem is not required and you are right! more and more schools like to see students taking biochem.

Applications for the three-year MD pathway are available through the applicant portal beginning July 1 at 12:00 AM EST. Important deadlines to be aware of are as follows: (1) tertiary application deadline is February 28 by 11:59 PM EST; (2) interviews with residency program directors will occur in late March through the end of April and in late May/early June; (3) decision letters are sent by June 13 with most decision letters going out by May 9 with applicants waitlisted to the three-year MD pathway notified in a similar fashion.

Hey! Where are you getting this information from?? The website doesn't say anything about interviewing to the end of April and again in late May/early June... Website only states 3 yr pathway interviews are conducted in March with decisions made by May 9th. Thanks in advance--

The info is here! http://school.med.nyu.edu/md-admissions/three-year-md-pathway-faqs#
Someone earlier asked about the number of spots for each residency and that is under the tab where it says "where can I view the webinar." Its in that PDF

Also have people been hearing back about interviews yet for the 3-year program??

Wow. thanks so much! That must be new bc I've looked all over the website and have never seen this. I can't imagine interviewing for a spot in June for an "unfilled spot" starting July. Wow that is nuts!! Hey, I would take it though!!! I'm glad interviews go through April too.. I was getting really concerned. Still waiting.. Hoping for an interview.

Sorry if this is somewhat out of place.

I know this was discussed earlier in the thread but I was hoping for some clarification.

"Yes, as long as it appears as AP credit on your undergraduate transcript. On the secondary application, enter AP in the grade box. Please note: We do not accept exempt credit for any required course."

What exactly does exempt credit mean? I have a waiver on my transcript for the second semester of general chemistry lab due to "credit by exam" offered by my university. Will this suffice? Any insight would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

(Congrats to you all with acceptances here!)

What do you mean by "waiver"? If you received "credit by exam" it should be listed on your transcript as credit with an associated semester/quarter value. If that's not the case, have you taken any more advanced chemistry classes with a lab, beyond orgo? (e.g. pchem) If so, then you have satisfied your chemistry requirement. At my university, an exempt credit would be if you were excused from a core class because of test scores (e.g. SAT, ACT) and so would never have to take the class. (unlike advanced placement where you would move on to the next class instead of the intro version)

Mine is bad too... 55K in loans... Will most likely be withdrawing! Good luck to everyone waiting!

for some reason im having trouble figuring out how to check my financial aid... what link do we go to?

home.nyu.edu... They sent instructions on setting up an account a couple months ago.

Anyone else's award not showing up?

I don't think I ever got the NetID instructions email

42k in loans, so it's not that bad, but I'm most likely withdrawing. It's been fun, NYU!

I also got all loans. Goddamit, I am likely going to my state school because of money reasons. This is like college all over again -_-

How long do we have to accept our award and complete the to do items? Do we just wait until we figure out where we're going before accepting any awards?

I'm also considering going to my state school over OOS's. In addition to the pricey private school tuition, living in NY would be very expensive. But are we closing the doors to great connections and opportunities at NYU and the other great med schools neighboring NYU?

Financial aid awards are out..... 78K in loans :wideyed:
when you guys all say this, are you talking about yearly ? I am currently on the waitlist and I was about to send them an LOI but I am reconsidering to just go to my state school even though I did like NYU a ton

Yes. $78K/yr in loans.

Mine was 78K/year. I love NYU but don't know if I can justify the cost, either.

would that include you living expenses too? yeah holy **** that is a lot. I wonder if it it changes yearly? or you can expect that much every year...that's like 250 k in 4 years.

Yes it includes living expenses and tuition so I'm sure you don't have to take out the full amount. Even so, it's very expensive...

What does it mean to accept or decline an award? If we accept, does that mean we can't bargain later? Can we still turn down the school later? How much time do we have to accept? If we decline, that means they'll divert the money elsewhere and we'd have to manage by ourselves? I'm very confused...

Just got an interview invited for the 3 year med program via email! Except... They asked to interview during second look, which starts tomorrow and I'm going to be at another second look... I feel like someone cancelled their interview so I was a backup lol... On top of that, I'm so torn about this because even if I'm accepted to the 3 year med program, I'll graduate with more debt than the school I'm thinking about attending right now. Ugh.

I would so do the 3-year MD program at NYU! Just as I would have done a 7-year BS/MD had I been accepted

Yeah, I think I'm going to go and deal with the finances later lol.
You may save up some tuition by going to the 4-year school, but 3-year path lets you practice for an extra year ($$$$$ anyone?).

edit: and so much less stress applying to residencies and studying for STEP 1

withdrew my acceptance from NYU today. great place, but not the best fit for me. i hope one of you guys on the wait list get in!! peace.

Good point. I was thinking about all of those factors too, but isn't there a requirement that you have to stay in the top half of the program to stay?

So does this mean I can plan on finding nemo at second look now???

Perhaps... Though I asked for a different interview date because I can't make it on Friday. On a side note, I thought @Agent B posted on this thread when I saw your avatar lol.

I haven't heard of that. Even if that's true, you'll be fine with chill students like me barely passing.

Full ride offer (full tuition + room/board + books, etc for all four years) via phone call just now 😱 NYU is back on my short list. I still can't really process this. What do I DO?!!?!???

Congratulations! Was this in response to you withdrawing your app or were you about to withdraw but got this phone call? I would go with the money because a full ride is a ton of money to pass up.
