2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone - I'm IS and received the UCLA secondary 9/16, which I submitted 10/9. Just today, I got the secondary for UCLA PRIME, but the first two sentences of the e-mail oddly go like this:

"Dear UCLA PRIME applicant,

Monday, October 28th to return your supplemental information and the additional required items. All materials MUST be in our office by October 28th..."

For others who received UCLA PRIME secondary invites, is there information in this e-mail I'm missing? o_0 It looks like something was accidentally deleted, maybe while copying/pasting, but based off the info I did get, I don't think I'll have any trouble submitting it or knowing what the next steps are. Just wanted to see if there's something I'm missing... thanks!

I don't think that's what he meant. We cant tell you bc we dont know

Congrats to the interview invites! To everyone else, hang in there and try not to obsess over this. The year will go a lot more quickly if you try to focus on the rest of your life rather than updating your calendar of how many days it's been since you submitted the secondary..

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but is there a reason why the 10th percentile (for GPA) is so low for UCLA? I mean, it gives me hope (I plan on applying next summer), but not sure if it's an unreliable statistic.

Acceptees with 10th percentile GPA likely have 90th percentile MCATs and/or very good reasons for their GPA and/or have very unique backgrounds with something to offer other than numbers.

This is most likely the reason and not just for Geffen but also for other competitive programs too.

My PRIME e-mail looked similar, only it was back in September. If you're paranoid go ahead and send them an e-mail - they're pretty friendly to an inquiry about completion of the application. 🙂

The original email reads:

Dear UCLA PRIME applicant,

We are pleased to send you the UCLA PRIME SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FORM. You have until Friday, August 30th to return your supplemental information and the additional required items. *All materials MUST be in our office by August 30th. *Please follow the directions provided to you on the first page of our form. *Applicants can access the link to the UCLA PRIME SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FORM at [link]

Thank you!

Seems like they haven't noticed their error! Or they aren't pleased to send a secondary

Can you let us know what's the interview dates available? Thanks.

I don't have a date scheduled yet as we only pick days of the week we are available and type in specific dates we are unavailable. I'm sure it will be updated by the end of the week.

Yea, its definitely a different system from most other schools. Once they get your unavailability times and preferred days, they pick a date and email it to you. I also believe my email said that you couldn't reschedule. So, be REALLY specific with your availability info when you put it in. They got back to me pretty quickly though with a date that worked perfectly.

Haha... I applied to Geffen after hearing they don't care what your state of residency is...but after looking at the MSAR, I didn't realize before how few OOS-ers matriculate. Want to take a chance on me UCLA? I'd gladly move to Cali for you 😎

Lol maybe! Thanks for the responses and clarification, really appreciate it. 🙂

Would people with interview please give dates when they were complete!! 😀

To those who have received interview invites, did it say to send your official transcript as soon as possible? I thought we were only suppose to send in the official transcript after we have matriculated.

You are correct, dont worry about it till after you matriculate here.

As far as the OOS question goes, only ~20 in our class of 175 are OOS BUT this is (probably) mostly due to a larger proportion of IS people choosing to come here because of cost/location to home. That is, I suspect there are many OOS who are admitted but choose to go elsewhere since DGSOM has about $12k extra in tuition for OOS I believe and they may want to be closer to family/significant others.

Don't let those numbers stop you from applying since this is a really cool place!

Are there student hosts by any chance? I couldn't find it in the confirmation email.

Thanks for replying. Do you know if there is a matching program or can we get the email list?

If you email the admissions office then they can put you on the list of applicants that need a student host

I'd recommend staying with a student host if you can in order to see the apartments. You'll most likely be living there for your pre-clinical years unless you'd prefer to drop fat stacks of cash and live somewhere else.

Some people be ballin! (Not me though)

Yea definitely request a student host in the fancy new building with the wraparound balconies. Not even kidding. Also not my apartment. 🙁

I feel like less of a grown up in a dorm. Lol

Well holy hell...I just spent the last hour or two walking around Westwood and the UCLA campus and it's gorgeous...I wish I could go back and re-do undergrad here

 bruh, I'm trying to get that David Geffen Scholarship....full tuition + living costs? yes, please haha

I'm actually pretty excited for my Drew interview tomorrow...and after walking around the campus, I may just fill out that Geffen secondary and get it in 👍

Seems a bit presumptive of you, that you'd get in and get the scholarship. Stay grounded bruh, no one wants to be (or be around) that guy in med school.

Pshh I'm not presuming anything...just aiming high.

Hey man, if you're not interviewing in order to get in and get $$ then what are you interviewing for? At the end of the day the financial package is very important and UCLA happens to have a great endowment thanks to Mr. Geffen...I don't think there's anything wrong with shooting for the top and applying to a school that has both a great program and a great reputation for supporting its students 🙂

I'm just playing devils advocate, you know that. Still, you don't apply to medical school on the assumption that it's going to be free. That is a wildly presumptive mentality. Especially when ADCOMS browse these forums ;-)

I know you are the devil's advocate lol. And you don't apply on the assumption that it's going to be free, but when a school advertises right on its website about these awesome scholarships (http://healthsciences.ucla.edu/dgsom/pages/geffenscholarship#question2DivShow) then I think it's safe to assume that they want you to know about them and are encouraging competitive applicants to apply because of them.

We all know that there are only a select few schools in the country with this kind of endowment...they don't just put that money there for no reason -- they want to use it to recruit the best applicants in the country.

I'm not presuming that I am going to get one, but it's nice to dream, and if they happen to think I'm a good candidate and want to give me some money for it then awesome; if not, I'll enjoy my interview experience, hope I get in, and go along my merry way.

I take it since there is no emoticons, that your comment is serious. ChemEd is one of the most humble bruhs on these threads.

What's presumptious about him trying to get a scholarship?

Guys, guys, I think this was just a misreading. Note how ChemEngMD said he wants to fill out the secondary and get IT in, not get in (although props to you if you do). Just pointing that out. That's how I interpreted it anyway! 🙂

It came off presumptuous. Not the letter, but the spirit. ChemEng and are SDN brothers from different mothers, don't worry about our dynamic. ;-)

(Included an emoticon to evade ambiguity)

Yeah man...I just want to get that beastly secondary in haha...I took one look at it and immediately had second thoughts but now after seeing the school I'm having third thoughts and wanna give it a go
