2013-2014 University of Kentucky Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would they review my application even if all my letters aren't in? I have 2 already received, but the letter packet from my school will be another two weeks, sadly.

Same here! Didn't it seem a bit weird that that early of a date was open? I wonder if they just added it maybe?

Mind sharing your stats?

Nontrad, cGPA 3.88, sGPA 4.0, 31 (10/11/10), 6+ years clinical employment, weak ECs (~5 months volunteer GED tutor, hiked the Appalachian Trail for charity).

Sorry if this is somewhere else, but I couldn't find it. Does anyone know what the stats are for interviews and acceptances for OOS?

Not sure there are stats on how many were actually accepted.

Thank you!! I asked because I got an II yesterday and was curious to see what % interviewed get accepted.

II with GPA on the lower end and average MCAT. completed 8/13. OOS.

II yesterday, time from secondary completion to II was two days! Loving the responsiveness.

OOS (family in the area, used to live in KY), MCAT in mid 30s, GPA ~ 3.7

Random Question! Anyone know if UK uses Tegrity or other lecture recording system?

Got my II yesterday (just 2 days after I submitted the secondary!). Wow! It's nice to hear back from a school so quickly. Unfortunately, the earliest available interview date is in November...

Don't worry about it much; that still seems early in their season. I received an II on 1 Aug and won't interview until mid-Oct. Good luck!

Was anyone contacted by the admissions office and talked to about your application? Has anyone interviewed yet and what was outcome?

They contacted me to discuss the possibility of dual residency and to urge me to hurry and submit my secondary. It was really cool that they reached out...

This thread is pretty quiet. I'd like to hear from those who interviewed as well.

Hi all! I went for an Early Decision interview at UK last week and had a great experience! The day was very laid back. I had heard a bit about how their interview days usually go and it pretty much followed that exactly.

When we arrived we were gathered into a conference room and given a short presentation that was basically just general info about the school (curriculum, location, new hospital info, etc). Then the interviewers filed into the room and introduced themselves to all of us. Each interviewer called out the name of the first person they were to interview and led us to their interview room. They use some of the admissions offices and then their practice patient rooms over in the Learning Center.

My first interview was very laid back, very conversational. My interviewer basically just wanted to hear about my background, my experiences as an undergrad, why I chose medicine, etc. Very general stuff. Before I knew it, our time was up and I was led back to the conference room. From there my second interviewer took me to her interview room and we again had a very relaxed conversation. Both of my interviewers really just wanted to get to know me rather than asking me a bunch of tough questions and putting me on the spot. However I also heard from some of the other interviewees that they did get asked some ethical questions and things like that - I guess it really depends on who you're interviewing with, so make sure you're prepared for anything!

After the interviews, they provide a boxed lunch and a presentation about financial aid. We were taken on a tour by some current 2nd year medical students and then free to go! It was a pretty relaxed atmosphere the entire day - everyone was super welcoming and just seemed happy that we were there! I hope all of you that get the opportunity to interview here have a similar experience! UK is awesome!

Do you guys think I should bother submitting my secondary today if interviews are already through October?

OOS, 3.65 c/sGPA, 37 MCAT, typical ECs.

Only October? I received an II on one of the first days they were offered and ended up in October. You are likely far from late, if you submit a secondary soon.

Thanks. SDN has, I think, given me an extraordinarily skewed view on the timing of this whole process. 🙁

If you're ready and have the money, apply. If not, don't. That's about all you should be considering right now... not how it may or may not look compared to other pre-meds on SDN that may or may not be applying right now.

So I submitted my secondary around 8/20, and I still haven't received an II 🙁. I called the office and they confirmed my file is complete. My status still appears as "sent to screening." Should I start to worry? I'm just stressing because I've seen a couple of people on here who received an II like two days after they submitted!

Hey there. I also just graduated with a bachelors in May. Did you apply last year at all, or is this your first cycle?

Sorry, just saw this! This is my first cycle. =] I opted to take a gap year during my late sophomore/ early junior year because I transferred and changed majors early on... my courseload was jam-packed all four years so I didn't want to rush things haha.

INTERVIEW INVITE! My first of the season - I was starting to get worried! I'm so over the moon, shaking happy!

OOS, super weak ties (some of my dad's family lives in Louisville - second cousins, great aunts, stuff like that), 3.65 c/sGPA (strong upward trend), 37 MCAT, average EC.

Submitted: 9/5
Complete: 9/9
II: 9/10

II! Crisis averted. Now what? Do I get an email or something telling me how to schedule the interview?

They will e-mail you with a link that you then go to and create a password for the e-mail address they e-mail you at. Then you choose an interview date! For the regular MD interviews, earliest available dates are November 5th and 9th. I'll be there 11/9, so maybe I'll get to meet you?? 😀

11/9 sounds good to me! Maybe we'll see each other...if only this elusive email would show up before all the spots are taken :-/

Woo! I logged on to check my status and it says "Interview to be scheduled". Is there something I need to do?

That's great!

I just checked my status again and I'm still on OOS applicant "screening hold". It's been that way since Aug 23.

Wonderful. I'm excited to at least know someone in the interview group!

I've never been to Kentucky before, so I'm excited to see Lexington! My boyfriend (a saint) has agreed to make the 8 hour drive (each way) from Wisconsin with me, so we're making it a weekend. Suggestions for things to do? We're thinking the UK/Northern Kentucky basketball game, Raven's Run hike, bourbon tour? I'm trying to make it fun for him since I'm dragging him 16 round trip hours in my car with me...

Hey, congrats! How do you know you got an interview if you didn't get an email? My status changed to "Interview to be scheduled," does that mean II or does that mean they've screened and now it's under review?

I read the status change from "sent to screening" to "interview(s) to be scheduled" to mean that they were going to give me an interview. I hope I didn't misread their intent and celebrate prematurely. 😕

No I hope you're right! Another school I'm applying to changes to that "Interview not yet scheduled" status once you're complete, but KY has a different system, so I guess that's what they meant.Well, we'll find out soon enough 🙂

If you'd like to get a real taste of the culture, go try out Keeneland and bet on some horse racing. However, I don't know when your interview is, it may be closed by then. If it's late enough for Keeneland to be closed, then UK basketball may be started back up, and just going by a tailgate can be eye opening; people LOVE their sports team in Lexington. It's almost comical. I live right outside Lex and go from time to time.

Invited! Going November 23rd! Woo! (I'm in state)

Wow the slots filled up very quickly - they must have sent out a batch yesterday.

I got lucky registering for an October 12th interview. The next available dates are in December now...

So whats the consensus on the "Interview to be scheduled" status? Does it mean I should be expecting an interview invitation?

I had the "interview to be scheduled" status for about a week. I sent the admissions office an email about it, and they responded with a link to the website where you can schedule the interview.

I may try that as well. BTW, are there still interview spots open for November?

Only open spots are now in 2014. Looks like I missed the boat.

No, I don't think you should worry. It seems there is no sort of screening process, I received mine before my AMCAS was even reviewed. Probably just processing taking some extra time.

Are u guys just relisting your courses again on page one? Or are they asking us to only fill out the courses that were recommended like biochem/cell bio? They left three spaces for each subject, and I've had a lot more than three bio courses.
I'm IS and waiting for my AMCAS to be reviewed. I haven't received a secondary yet. I had heard that in state students automatically receive a secondary, so I'm surprised that I haven't yet received one. Anyone else in this situation? Or did IS people receive a secondary soon after submission of AMCAS (but before it was verified)?
